Scamander was the surname of a well-respected and well-established[2] European[3] wizarding family. Many of its members worked as Magizoologists. They were related by marriage to the Goldstein and Lovegood families. The family had ties to the Magical Congress of the United States of America through Newt Scamander's marriage to Porpentina Goldstein, the Head of the Department of Aurors.[4]
History[]
The mother of Newt and Theseus Scamander bred Hippogriffs for a living and helped to inspire her son's lifelong interest in magical creatures.
Theseus Scamander worked as an Auror with the British Ministry of Magic and was described as a powerful wizard.[5][6] He participated in the wizarding effort in the First World War, and afterward was considered a war hero. By 1927, he had proposed to Leta Lestrange and were engaged.[7]
Newton Scamander, O.M. (Second Class), was born in 1897. He was a famed Magizoologist and the author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.[8] Early in life, Newt developed an interest in magical creatures, influenced by his mother's breeding of Hippogriffs. He attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he was Sorted into Hufflepuff House, but was later expelled. Newt would go on to marry Porpentina Goldstein, an American witch, and together they had at least one child, presumably a son.
The Scamander family was "not impressed" by Newt's career in Magizoology.[9]
Rolf Scamander, Newt and Tina's grandson, married Luna Lovegood sometime between 1998 and 2011.[10] Together they had twin sons, Lorcan and Lysander.

Etymology[]
In Greek mythology, Scamander was a river god who fought for Troy during the Trojan War. He was also considered a personification of the Scamander River, along the lower plains of which the battles of the Trojan War were fought, according to The Iliad. The river is now called Karamenderes and flows through the Turkish province of Çanakkale. It is also the name of a town and a river in Tasmania.
