The wolf, also known as gray wolf or common wolf (Canis lupus), is a wilder species of dog and a widely distributed mammal but in time has become extinct in much of Western Europe, in Mexico and much of the United States of America. It was mentioned in 1993 during a Defence Against the Dark Arts class by Severus Snape as being part of the Anglo-Saxon word werewolf, wer meaning man and wolf, manwolf.
Behind the scenes
The Latin Canis lupus ends in lupus which is Remus Lupin's Danish name, Remus Lupus.
