"I well recall the time when, on a peculiarly perspicacious journey into the heart of the Fijian rainforest, while engaged in a legendary odyssey to rescue the Giant Fire Crab from extinction at the hands of unscrupulous wizard poachers, I had occasion to rest a while in the shade of a banyan tree."
Gilderoy Lockhart, Marauding with Monsters[src]

A wizard Poacher

A wizard poacher was a wizard who hunted creatures illegally. They hunted to kill a creature in order to gain something from it (e.g. the meat, horns, skin, hair or teeth).

History[]

In 1878, Dinah Hecat single-handedly took out the largest poaching ring in eastern Wales in the Great Poacher Raid of 1878, from which she confiscated a Hebridean Black skeleton that later hung from the ceiling of her classroom at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.[1]

In 1890, a Poacher Pack was staying in Hogsmeade with orders from Victor Rookwood to capture a student of Hogwarts. They were staging a secret dragon fighting ring called Horntail Hall. At one point, they tried to capture a Hippogriff called Highwing who was rescued by the student with Natsai Onai. The presence of poachers around Hogwarts was a great concern for the creatures that lived in the Forbidden Forest.[2]

Newt Scamander rescued Frank, a Thunderbird, from wizard poachers trafficking him in Egypt and gave it a temporary home in his suitcase, hoping to release him back into his natural habitat in the wilds of Arizona.[3]

Gilderoy Lockhart claimed that while in the heart of a Fijian rainforest, he had time to rest and hide from such wizards in a banyan tree on his mission to save Giant Fire Crabs from them.[4] However given his dishonesty and fraudulence, this deed was presumably carried out by one of the more courageous and accomplished wizards from whom he stole credit of impressive-sounding adventures and various feats of bravery.[5]

Before the 2010s, Kellen Carrion was the boss of a group of poachers. They captured and traded magical animals around the world. Long Shouren was an unwilling member of the group until he decided to flee with a dragon egg he wanted to rescue. The rest of group stayed together. Qui LeBlanc eventually joined it.[6][7]
