Hermione: "These birds... they can't be here just for decoration."
Harry: "They're not birds! They're keys! Winged keys."
Hermione Granger and Harry Potter when they entered the chamber of winged keys[src]

Winged keys are the bewitched flying keys that guards a passage to the chamber where the Philosopher's Stone is kept or hidden. It was darted and dived so quickly so it was almost impossible to catch one. One of these is the right key to open the locked door that can't be open with Alohomora spell, the door for the next chamber which is the chamber of the bewitched giant Chessboard. The key they need was described as old-fashioned one and probably silver with bright blue wings.

Harry used a broomstick to be able to catch the key they need.

Differences Between Novel and Film

  • In the novel, Harry, Hermione and Ron, each seized a broomstick and kicked off into the air while in the film, Only Harry flew using a broomstick.
