Views on Defence Against the Dark Arts

Based on the book he wrote, he discourages the usage of spells in a combative method, even for defensive purposes. Instead, he advocates a more passive approach to dealing with confrontation. He also disapproves of the term "Counter-jinx", as he believes it is simply a phrase to make jinxes more acceptable. Hermione Granger, on the other hand, disagrees.

Added by Seth CooperDolores Umbridge used his book in her position as Defence Against the Dark Arts professor during the 1995–1996 school year, in an effort to prevent the students from learning to use offensive spells, or as the Ministry saw it, from being "trained in combat" in an attempt to take over the Ministry on behalf of Albus Dumbledore.
