"Mum sends us a jumper every Christmas. And mine's always maroon."
Ron Weasley[src]

A Weasley jumper was a home-made jumper made by Molly Weasley for family and friends and sent as Christmas gifts. They usually varied in colour, but often had the recipient's first initial on the front. Fred and George seemed to enjoy them, calling them "lovely and warm", but Ron disliked the fact that his jumper was always maroon.[1]

History

Harry’s Weasley Jumper WU

Harry Potter's Weasley jumper

Beginning in Christmas 1991, Harry Potter received an annual Weasley jumper. This would be among the first meaningful Christmas presents Harry had ever received.[1] His were usually much more extravagant, including one with the picture of a Hungarian Horntail.[3]

PAS Weasley Jumper

Ron Weasley's jumper

In Christmas 1994, Ron Weasley gave his jumper to Dobby the house elf, who was overjoyed by it.[3] In Christmas 1995, Percy Weasley, who had broken contact with the family following Voldemort's return, returned his jumper to Molly unopened. This left Molly very heartbroken.[4] In Christmas 1996, it was noted that Molly did not make one of these for Fleur Delacour, apparently not wanting to waste on her. At the time, Molly did not approve of Fleur's upcoming marriage to her son, William Weasley.[5]

On 1 September 2017, Hermione Granger, whilst on the Platform Nine and Three-Quarters asked her daughter, Rose Granger-Weasley whether she had her jumper or not.[6]

  • Other terms for jumper include sweater, pullover, or jersey. Sweater is used in the Scholastic editions of the Harry Potter novels, because in American English, jumper refers to what the British call a pinafore dress.
  • In a deleted scene of the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone at Christmas, Harry's jumper is blue. However, in all its other appearances, it is emerald green, like in the books. (It is likely that the blue one was cut from the first film for being inaccurate.)
  • In Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, the player can receive a Weasley jumper with a W on it by reaching level 10 friendship with Bill Weasley.
