Harry Potter: "Ron, what's Seamus trying to do to that glass of water?"
Ron Weasley: "Turn it to rum. Actually managed a weak tea yesterday, before—"
Seamus Finnigan's spell-casting being interrupted by an explosion[src]

Eye of rabbit, harp string hum, turn this water into rum was supposedly the incantation of a transfiguration spell that turned water into rum. Its authenticity was dubious, as it had only been known to either create a weak tea, or an explosion.[1]

Known uses[]

Seamus Finnigan turning water into rum PSF

Seamus trying the spell in the Great Hall

Seamus Finnigan, a first year, tried to cast it in September 1991 in the Great Hall at the Gryffindor table, and in his first attempt, he managed to make a "weak tea," before causing an explosion. The next day, he tried again several times, but only caused another explosion, creating smoke and blackening his face. This failed piece of magic gained laughter from his Gryffindor housemates.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

  • It is unknown if this is a real spell or not, or simply a case of bangs-and-smells magic, although given that Seamus could turn the water into a weak tea, it is possible that it is, although he could not perform it correctly. Alternatively, it is not a real spell, and the turning of the water into a weak tea was purely accidental.
