The logo for the W.O.M.B.A.T.s

"Unlike the O.W.L.s, the W.O.M.B.A.T.s consist exclusively of written papers. Therefore W.O.M.B.A.T.s could be sat by Muggles as well as wizards, although the Wizarding Examinations Authority does not believe that any Muggle would have the degree of inner-knowledge required to achieve a pass."
— Excerpt from the Grade 3 W.O.M.B.A.T.[src]

The Wizards' Ordinary Magic and Basic Aptitude Test (or W.O.M.B.A.T.) was a series of tests administered by the Wizarding Examinations Authority. The test scores from the W.O.M.B.A.T.s, like the O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s, were accepted as a valid form of credentials for witches and wizards wanting to apply for a job.[1] Unlike the two latter, however, the W.O.M.B.A.T.s consisted exclusively of written papers. Therefore, W.O.M.B.A.T.s could in theory be sat by Muggles as well as wizards and witches, although the Wizarding Examinations Authority did not believe that any Muggle would have the degree of inner knowledge required to pass it.

Coursework

The test had three parts, each of which consisted of a series of questions which required an extensive knowledge on a wide variety of subjects, ranging from wizarding law and academic matters to current-day events and everyday magic. An intuitive understanding of the wizarding world and educated guesses were required to complete successfully, as the information to answer them all definitively was not available, even in the associated Revision Guide.[1] The point of the exam was to confirm whether or not the sitter were able to exist safely and effectively within the wizarding community.

W.O.M.B.A.T. scores

Each of the three parts of the test, known as Grade 1, 2 and 3 respectively, was assessed one at a time. Every time the sitters finished one of the tests, the Ministry would spend a few of days going over and marking it before permitting them to proceed to the next one. Afterwards, an owl was sent to deliver the results to the people that took the test; as well as provide feedback on how well they did and what their prospects were relative to the achieved test scores. The results were delivered in the form of a framed certificate in the case of a passing grade, or a letter if it was a failing grade.

Along with the sitter's individual test scores on each of the three parts of the W.O.M.B.A.T. exam, the Wizarding Examinations Authority would also issue a message where they commented on their performance; whether it was to congratulate those who passed with distinction, impart feedback and suggestions on how to improve to those who did not, or to express their disbelief at sitters that did particularily poorly.

Grade 1

Passing

  • Outstanding
"CONGRATULATIONS! Your exemplary powers of deduction and a formidable knowledge of the inner workings of the magical world reveal you to be a witch or wizard of genuine skill and learning. This first examination has barely tested you. We look forward to challenging you to a further and more difficult examination in due course."
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]
  • Exceeds Expectations
"Well done - a most creditable performance! We are impressed by the breadth of your magical knowledge and your level of insight into the wizarding world. We hope that you will attempt our next, and more difficult, examination in due course."
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]
  • Acceptable
"We are pleased to tell you that you have passed your Grade 1 W.O.M.B.A.T. Your knowledge of the workings of the wizarding world demonstrates real magical potential. We hope that you will continue to study further and attempt W.O.M.B.A.T. Grade 2 in due course."
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]

Failing

  • Poor
"Alas - we regret to inform you that you have narrowly failed your Grade 1 W.O.M.B.A.T. This may have been due to factors outside your control (eg: poltergeist intervention, examination nerves or a malfunctioning quill.). Please do not disconsolate. Another examination will present itself in due course, should you wish to try again."
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]
  • Dreadful
"We are sorry to inform you that you have failed your Grade 1 W.O.M.B.A.T. A little further study of the textbooks is recommended. Should you wish to try again, a grade 2 W.O.M.B.A.T. will present itself in due course."
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]
  • Troll
"You would appear either to have abandoned the test due to factors outside your control (eg, earthquake, poltergeist attack), or else you are a troll, in which case you are to be congratulated on being able to use a computer and have achieved the grade of O.F.T. (Outstanding for Trolls)."
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]

Grade 2

Passing

  • Outstanding
"You have succeeded admirably where many of your fellow witches and wizards have failed! We are delighted to inform you that you have passed with distinction and honour. We would most earnestly recommend that you proceed to the third, and final, W.O.M.B.A.T. in due course. Very well done indeed!"
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]
  • Exceeds Expectations
"The examiners are most impressed by your thoughtful and intelligent answers and are pleased to inform you that your marks place you well above the average. You have demonstrated a high standard of magical knowledge. We hope very much that you will pursue your studies, culminating in the third and final W.O.M.B.A.T. in a few months' time."
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]
  • Acceptable
"You have comfortably satisfied the requirements of the examiners, who are pleased to inform you that you have passed your Grade 2 W.O.M.B.A.T. You are evidently a witch or wizard of skill and learning and we hope that you will continue your studies and attempt the third, and final, W.O.M.B.A.T. when examination time comes again."
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]

Failing

  • Poor
"We are sorry to have to inform you that you have failed your Grade 2 W.O.M.B.A.T. by the merest whisker. We hope that this will not dissuade you from attempting Grade 3 in due course. In the meantime, we advise chocolate to stave off a Dementor attack."
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]
  • Dreadful
"We regret to say that you have failed your Grade 2 W.O.M.B.A.T. We would advise a little further study of the textbooks and a course of Concentration Capsules. We hope that this disappointment will not dissuade you from attempting Grade 3 W.O.M.B.A.T. in due course."
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]
  • Troll
"Although this was a difficult examination, it was quite an achievement for you to score zero. We are forced to conclude that you were either making a rebellious statement about the futility of formal education (in which case you are probably a member of a subversive goblin group), or that you were too busy attempting to eat the examination paper to notice the questions (in which case, you are a troll)."
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]

Grade 3

Passing

  • Outstanding
"You are a witch or wizard of extraordinary flair and sagacity. Very few candidates achieve 'Outstanding' at Grade 3 W.O.M.B.A.T. Have you ever considered a teaching post at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? Application owls from such highly qualified candidates are always welcome. Heartiest congratulations!"
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]
  • Exceeds Expectations
"This excellent result proves you to be a witch or wizard of considerable learning. You have proven yourself to be part of the academic elite, and the Wizarding Examinations Authority was most impressed by your paper. The Ministry of Magic is always on the lookout for accomplished recruits such as yourself and would welcome your application owl. Very well done indeed!"
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]
  • Acceptable
"You have passed the final and most difficult W.O.M.B.A.T and are to be highly commended. Many of your fellow candidates were less fortunate. Your new qualification will stand you in good stead should you wish to join any of our more prestigious wizarding firms. Flourish & Blotts, the Nimbus Broom Company and Weasleys' Wizarding Wheezes are all currently recruiting, and would be delighted to receive an application owl."
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]

Failing

  • Poor
"Do not be disheartened. You have only narrowly failed this most demanding examination, and with a little further study would be sure to pass. You are to be congratulated on a good attempt. We recommend a crammer course of evening classes. Send an owl for full details of the Wallop the Wombat Revision Course, available from the Kwikspell Company."
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]
  • Dreadful
"Do not take your grade too much to heart, for this was an extremely difficult examination. A new textbook will be available on July 21st 2007, which will enable more effective study. In the meantime, console yourself with the thought that there were a large number of Trolls."
— The Wizarding Examinations Authority[src]
  • Troll
"You achieved the remarkable result of having a negative score. The examiners were rather impressed by this achievement, and have asked to interview you in person to ascertain whether you are truly a grunting club-wielder, or some kind of subversive genius. Send an owl (preferably alive, un-mangled and carrying a letter) to Griselda Marchbanks, CDMG, APMO, fdBB, Wizarding Examinations Authority, Ministry of Magic, to arrange an interview."

Behind the scenes

  • The W.O.M.B.A.T. was a series of tests presented on J. K. Rowling's official site, prior to its 2012 redesign. Presented partially as a Harry Potter trivia test, there is nevertheless additional information that can be gleaned from the questions.
  • Amusingly, Neil Murray, the husband of J. K. Rowling, took the first W.O.M.B.A.T. and only achieved a score of Acceptable, despite being in the same room as his wife when she was composing the quiz and listening to her read the answers out loud. This discouraged him from attempting either of the following two tests.[2]
  • Interestingly, even though the W.O.M.B.A.T. are ministered by the Wizarding Examination Authorities and are graded the same way that the O.W.L. and N.E.W.T.-examination are, they were never mentioned in the original Harry Potter books and hence seemingly not handed out to Hogwarts students, even as an optional test. As such, considering these tests were so significant in terms of magical education to merit the production of its own separate revision guide and given how said Ministry division even encouraged those that failed the tests to undergo the coursework offered by Kwikspell Company before trying again, these tests were presumably - from a purely in-universe perspective - a way for people to to renew their credentials later in life if they achieved bad marks on their school exams.
  • It is also interesting to note how this test not only could hypothetically serve as a citizenship test for immigrating wizards moving to the UK, but young witches and wizards that were home-schooled could also have taken it as an alternative to the O.W.L.s and N.E.W:T.s in the event that they were home-schooled. Indeed; as it would be unreasonable to expect a child tutored by their parents to have the same level of magical dexterity as those receiving a more thorough education from professional educators at a wizarding school, the W.O.M.B.A.T.s would have allowed the Ministry to determine whether their instruction in magic was sufficiently well-rounded to allow them to become a functioning member of the wizarding community of Great Britain without holding them to the exact same standard as a Hogwarts student.
