Vinegar is a sour liquid used as a condiment or as a preservative. It is obtained through the fermentation, or the artificial oxidation, of ethanol.[3]

History

According to an alchemical work dating back to the 1550s, vinegar was used in the making of the perfect medicine, along with salt, urine, Sal Ammoniac and a particular Sulphur Vive.[1][2]

Turning vinegar back into wine (and thus reverting the fermentation/oxidation process) was part of the sixth-year Charms curriculum at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.[4]

Vinegar was used as a defence mechanism by the Hufflepuff common room to ensure no non-members of the house could gain access; should the entry method be performed incorrectly, the offender would be doused in a large quantity of vinegar.[5]
