Vine (genus Vitis) in the narrowest sense is grapevine (Vitis), but more generally it can refer to any plant with a growth habit of trailing or scandent, that is to say climbing, stems or runners. The word also can refer to such stems or runners themselves, for instance when used in wicker work.[2]
History[]
The druids considered anything with a woody stem as a tree; this, combined with the fact that vine was thought to have produced wands of a special nature, means that whilst vines were not actually trees, they continued to be used in the production of wands to this day.
Wandlore[]
Vine wands were among the less common types, and their owners were nearly always those witches or wizards who sought a greater purpose, who had a vision beyond the ordinary and who frequently astounded those who thought they knew them best.[1]
Vine wands seemed strongly attracted by personalities with hidden depths, and Garrick Ollivander himself had found them more sensitive than any other when it came to instantly detecting a prospective match. Reliable sources claimed that these wands could emit magical effects upon the mere entrance into their room of a suitable owner, and this had been noted to have occurred twice within Ollivanders.[1]
Known vine wand owners[]
Etymology[]
Vine is derived from Latin vīnea "grapevine", "vineyard", from vīnum "wine".[2]
