Vine (genus Vitis) in the narrowest sense is the grapevine (Vitis), but more generally it can refer to any plant with a growth habit of trailing or scandent, that is to say climbing, stems or runners. The word also can refer to such stems or runners themselves, for instance when used in wicker work.[1]

Wandlore

The druids considered anything with a woody stem as a tree; this, combined with the fact that vine is thought to produce wands of a special nature, means that whilst vines are not actually trees they continue to be used in the production of wands to this day (at least, by Ollivanders Wand Shop). Vine wands are among the less common types, and their owners are nearly always those witches or wizards who seek a greater purpose, who have a vision beyond the ordinary and who frequently astound those who think they know them best.[2]

Vine wands seem strongly attracted by personalities with hidden depths, and Garrick Ollivander himself has found them more sensitive than any other when it comes to instantly detecting a prospective match. Reliable sources claim that these wands can emit magical effects upon the mere entrance into their room of a suitable owner, and this has been noted to have occured twice within Ollivanders Wand Shop.[2]

Etymology

Vine is derived from Latin vīnea "grapevine", "vineyard", from vīnum "wine".[1]
