The Viaduct was a bridge at Hogwarts Castle. It was constructed of stone, spanned a large chasm, and connected the grounds with the Viaduct Courtyard. There is a safety balustrade made of stone on each side of the Viaduct walkway to prevent people from falling, as well as iron torches to provide lighting.[1]

History[]

Late 1927[]

Hogwarts Viaduct Crimes of Grindelwald

Newt, Theseus, Tina, Jacob and Aurors meet with Dumbledore on the Viaduct

When Newt Scamadner and his allies travelled to Hogwarts to meet with Albus Dumbledore in late 1927, they walked on this bridge when arriving. Dumbledore showed the blood pact that he had made with Gellert Grindelwald to Newt on the bridge.[2]

1990–1991 school year[]

On 22 June 1991, the Circle of Khanna had their final showdown with members of 'R', a cabal of Dark wizards at the end of the Viaduct bridge. After members of the circle managed to defeat all the Dark wizards and witches whilst duelling them, Peregrine fled the scene with his younger child going after to catch him. However, they were confronted by Verucca Buckthorn-Snyde and her niece Merula Snyde on the bridge, who demanded Peregrine hand over Dai Ryusaki's amulet. He refused, and his child defeated Verucca in a duel to protect their father, knocking her to the floor and disarming her of her wand. Merula also abandoned her aunt, not breaking her Unbreakable Vow with her in the process. Verucca in anger produced Fiendfyre after wandlessly summoning her wand, directing the cursed flames to attack Peregrine, causing him to fall off the Viaduct without his wand. Verucca was soon arrested by Aurors led by Alastor Moody, but they were unable to find Peregrine, with Moody deducing he would not have survived the fall.[3]

1997–1998 school year[]

Viaduct Deathly Hallows Night

The Viaduct at night in 1998, shortly before the Battle of Hogwarts

On 2 May 1998 during the Battle of Hogwarts, Minerva McGonagall's enchanted suits of armour were stationed on the Viaduct to prevent the Death Eaters to enter the Castle proper. Once the magical protections around Hogwarts were broken, many Death Eaters charged through the Viaduct, as well as the Giants, destroying much of the balustrade.[4]
