Fera Verto is a spell that Transfigures animals into water goblets. If done incorrectly or with a faulty wand the transformation will only be partially successful, as shown by Ron Weasley in 1992.
Behind the scenes
- The spell is often misspelt Vera Verto (e.g., in the DVD subtitles) but is really Fera Verto.
- In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (film), Ron attempts to turn a rat into a water goblet. Some people believe this rat is house-animal Scabbers, though if a viewer scans the classroom, it is clear that students have a variety of animals ready to attempt to Transfigure (most notable would be Harry's owl Hedwig, not present in the room at the time), rather than Hogwarts-permitted animals (owls, cats and toads)
- In the video game version of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry has to transform an animal into a cup during his practical Transfiguration OWL exam. It's unknown if this spell was Fera Verto. In the PC version, it was mentioned that a girl had transfigured a mouse into a cup.
Etymology
From Latin fera meaning "beast" or "animal", and verto, meaning “I turn”.
