How do I add myself to a house because I'm not seeing where to type in the code to add yourself to a house? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Bellatrixisawsome (talk • contribs) 6:57, September 5, 2010.
I haven't seen you around for a while, so I'm hoping you're doing alright. - Nick O'Demus 17:52, October 10, 2010 (UTC)
Good to see you're back. : )
I was away from the wiki for a few weeks myself around August-September because of computer problems (long story short, I ended up having to replace my hard drive, and reinstall my OS 3 times before the errors stopped).
Matoro183 decided to go inactive of their own volition, and Hcoknhoj has been promoted to Admin to replace them. Also Grunny has been made a Bureaucrat since DarkJedi613 and John Reaves have been gone for so long.
There's a new Image policy concerning file uploads. Users who upload without filling out the {{Information}} template (at least the important parts) get the {{Upload}} warning message added to their talk page. If they keep uploading without the Information, they get blocked for a little while. Cavalier One's been cleaning out the unused images and has done a few blocks already.
There's also a new policy proposal for Admins and Bureaucrats who go inactive for extended periods (at least 6 months). Personally, I have mixed feelings: I understand the reasoning, I'm just not entirely certain it's necesary. It's alrady got a +3 vote, but there hasn't been any action or discussion recently, so I don't know.
Oh, and Wikia has a new, mandatory skin that's already up. You can see more of it here (there's some FAQ's and guides too). Monaco will no longer be available after Nov. 3rd.
I've had several users asking about the next term of the HP Game, and I had some ideas I wanted to run by you. I really feel the problem with the last term was that too much emphasis was placed on creating articles, and as a result, most of the points were earned by a very small number of people working alone. Also, there have been some... issues... the last few months with a couple of users creating articles of questionable necessity and validity (such as Spoon, Linens, Small green package, Fly killed by Cormac McLaggen, etc.), and I really don't want to encourage that kind of behaviour.
I was thinking the next round could focus on improving articles. We've got 58 Articles needing cleanup, 49 Articles to be expanded, 25 Articles with unsourced statements, and 19 Articles to be merged, and those are just the ones that have actually been tagged. Players could earn points for cleaning up and reporting their progress to their Prefects, and if the Prefects are satisfied, they can remove the tag. Bonus points could be earned the more people they can get to coordinate, like on Project Scarhead or Project Snakeface, with each team member volunteering to take on certain sections, like History, Relationships, etc. And, if a group feels they've improved an article to the point that it's FA worthy, they can put forth a nomination, and if it's approved, they earn a BIG bonus for their team.
Let me know what you think. - Nick O'Demus 11:49, October 21, 2010 (UTC)
You´ve uploaded very good images. Even though Kendra's and Ariana's deathdates are contradicted by Rowling, do you think it could be canon that Kendra was 48 years old when she died? He birthdate would be c. 1951. It's never contradicted.--Rodolphus 08:41, October 22, 2010 (UTC)
With the recent rise in new users and contributions that has been the direct result of the current Wizarding World Giveaway, I would like us to consider increasing our visibility within the HP fan community. To this end, I am tabling the following actions for consideration:
The creation of some type of "affiliates program" where we can maintain links to other HP related sites and they can link back to us through mutual agreement.
The setting up of an official HPW twitter feed that all administrators would be able to access and post through (or designate a member of the admin team to use).
Setting up a Facebook "fan page".
The HP community on the Internet is massive, and I think we could benefit from a higher profile. As you well know, I am against turning the site into some type of social network/forum, and I don't plan for that to change. I think that by maintaining these resources off site will allow us to better channel those users who want to engage in such activities away from the wiki and into more appropriate places. For instance, the FB fan page can be used as a social forum and image host, which will allow us to direct users there instead of dealing with them on site. Thoughts? - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 13:03, November 18, 2010 (UTC)
Okay, our official Facebook fan page and Twitter feed are up! Any SysOps who want admin access to either should let me know through the email function; the FB can have admins, while I will provide the Twitter log-in details to you (it is set up on a separate HPW exclusive account). Links are on the main page as well. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 12:36, November 22, 2010 (UTC)
I step out for just a bit, and a full-on attack happens. Sheesh. - Nick O'Demus 13:25, November 24, 2010 (UTC)
The contest is the Wizarding World Giveaway, it's being run by Wikia Entertainment. Kacieh and Babyjabba are our contacts on the matter, you can read most of the discussions on their talk pages, as well as Grunny's and Cavalier One's, since they've been doing most of the corresponding. You should already have some messages on your talkpage about increasing our visibility with our own FaceBook page and Twitter feed, plus the Affiliates program.
To say there's been an increase in traffic because of the contest is an understatement. We've had more new user registrations in the last 2 weeks than the previous 4 months combined. Granted, most of them are just here for the contest, but it's still been a bit hectic. We've been mentioned in articles on Mugglenet, ChicagoNow.com, and NPR.org, so that's pretty cool.
Babyjabba made some changes to the Main Page, but only for the duration of the contest, so I've pushed back the dates on our regular Featured stuff for the time being. More details are on their and Grunny's talk pages.
I think that's most of it. I'll let you know if I remember anything else. - Nick O'Demus 13:54, November 24, 2010 (UTC)
Also, here's a list of other pages and sections related to the contest:
When an unreg user tries to edit an article's talk page, but ends up creating a whole separate page, is that a comment, and are there any way we can respond to them? I haven't been around much lately and am still getting used to the new skin (which I despise). --JKoch(Owl Me!) 18:02, December 2, 2010 (UTC)
Out of curiosity, how do you even make a comment? I don't see that option. --JKoch(Owl Me!) 18:20, December 2, 2010 (UTC)
Would you be opposed to me editing the Editing Policy to reflect that citations go outside the punctuation. It is one of the things Grunny always points out in FANs, and a considerable amount of the articles have citations inside the punctuation. --JKoch(Owl Me!) 18:40, December 2, 2010 (UTC)
Just curious, but aren't most of the pics on the wand page also replicas? As well as the galleon/sickle pics, broomsticks, most of those pictures aren't pictures of the props from the movies but replicas of them.... --BachLynn(Accio!) 17:35, December 6, 2010 (UTC)
Ok, I understand now, thanks for clearing that up for me :-) --BachLynn(Accio!) 15:37, December 7, 2010 (UTC)
The videogames usually follow the plot of movie correct? Because then, the cafe is not on Tottenham Court Road, and we have issues of canonicity with the cafe in general, since the book says the cafe is on Tottenham Court Road. --JKoch(Owl Me!) 15:43, December 7, 2010 (UTC)
Hey, we got a user 86.161.254.108 trying to say that Unidentified lethal curse does not exist. He is also claiming that Bella killed Sirius with the Killing Curse, saying that the movies are the canon level, claiming that the book gives no information on Siruis's death. Could you back me up with him? Thanks, --JKoch(Owl Me!) 18:34, December 7, 2010 (UTC)
I did not say that the book gives no information on Sirius's death. What I said is that Rowling does not describe the curse that kills him, which is true. I also explained quite clearly why the books do not rule out Avada Kedavra as both Sirius's and Bellatrix's killer. Therfore, we look to to the next tier of canon - the films. You cannot go telling tales on someone just because they disagree with you. 86.161.254.108 18:47, December 7, 2010 (UTC)
Hey, I have been looking into the "Magical abilities and skills" sections of many of our articles, and I have found some serious problems with users going overboard, so I started a forum to see if we could standardize the rules and come up with some criteria to determine whether a character is an "Expert Duellist" or just a "Skilled Duellist." It can be found here. --JKoch(Owl Me!) 19:46, January 7, 2011 (UTC)
