Harry Potter Wizard's Collection

Did you buy it? If so, good score. I would love to have it, but I just don't have the cash to plunk down on a pricey collector's object like that at the moment. ProfessorTofty (talk) 16:07, September 10, 2012 (UTC)

Yes. I wasn't planning to get it originally, but I saw it when I was at the store buying something else, and the guy who worked there said they were only getting one in, so I made a "now or never" kind of decision. Used money I had put aside for a Wii U, since there's not really any launch titles in which I'm interested, and Wii U's will be produced for the next 5-10 years, whereas there's only going to be 60,000 Wizard's Collections made.
It's a very cool collection. Every HP movie release in one convenient box — albeit a very large, heavy one. Before pulling out any of the drawers, it's a cube a little under a foot high and wide, and weighs like 10 pounds. If you want to get one, try to to pick it up in a store, because I imagine shipping would be a small fortune on top of its already expensive asking price. Starstuff (Owl me!) 16:38, September 10, 2012 (UTC)
Well, I'd love to get one if I had the cash to plunk down for it, but I just don't at the moment. As for shipping, though, it's actually free on Amazon.com with Prime membership, or if you use their "Free Super Saver Shipping" option. ProfessorTofty (talk) 16:43, September 10, 2012 (UTC)
Was just some advice on how to potentially save money if it should become possible for you to get the box set sometime. :) I hadn't realized how large it was until I saw the real thing! Starstuff (Owl me!) 17:49, September 10, 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, it does sound pretty big. If I did get it, I'd probably get it on Amazon, since they'd send it to me in about a day or so and they seem to be offering a pretty good deal. ProfessorTofty (talk) 18:23, September 10, 2012 (UTC)
I read that the set contains a number of new behind-the-scenes bonus features. Picked up any interesting new bits of info from there? (Or have you had a chance to watch any yet?) ProfessorTofty (talk) 21:04, September 12, 2012 (UTC)
It includes all of the eight-part documentary series from the Ultimate Editions (spread across eight discs) as well as a ninth hidden "bonus" disc. I've seen the first four documentaries, but I'm planning on spacing out the rest. :) Starstuff (Owl me!) 10:39, September 13, 2012 (UTC)

Wonderbook

Thank you for adding all of the information that you have. I take it you have a copy of the book? --Hunniebunn (talk) 15:36, November 16, 2012 (UTC)

Yes. :) The new content is wonderful, and the game itself is more fun than I anticipated it would be, though it is rather on the short side and there were a few points where play control was frustrating/unresponsive. Starstuff (Owl me!) 16:53, November 16, 2012 (UTC)

About the Wonderbook ?

I know that you obtained this sentence ("It's covered in dust! You must be the first student in years to pick it up.") in the original version of Wonderbook, but I didn't manage to obtain it in French version.... if you have the possibility of obtaining it, inform me!

Thank you in advance!--Caliméro (talk) 14:15, November 19, 2012 (UTC)

Newest Pottermore update

So jealous - I've been busy all morning and didn't know an update was up. Now, I have to start work for a few hours in about 20 minutes, with only limited time for browsing. And Pottermore's just gone down! "Pottermore is currently unavailable. Please come back later and try again." Argh! ProfessorTofty (talk) 16:42, December 20, 2012 (UTC)

Don't worry! You can always enjoy the latest update over the weekend. It's like JKR's Christmas gift to us. :) Starstuff (Owl me!) 14:20, December 21, 2012 (UTC)

Sorry. :( Changed it back. I was going through Category:Nobility and just automatically changed what seemed to be a non-policy-compliant article name without knowing the talk page history. Starstuff (Owl me!) 09:50, December 21, 2012 (UTC)

Would you please stop saying I haven't learned anything? All I did was adding it. But I stopped after you explained your reasons. --DCLM (talk) 14:36, August 8, 2013 (UTC)

RE:Danniesen

Danniesen was here, after all, on probation. If you have reason to believe that those edits were unhelpful and not made in good faith, then, by all means, do as you must. There must be limits to what one can turn a blind eye, for the wiki's sake.

On an unrelated matter, it's great to see you back here! How have you been? --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 18:08, August 8, 2013 (UTC)

I've been pretty good. Unfortunately, I don't have as much time for wiki-ing as I used to have, so my presence has been (and will probably continue to be) somewhat sporadic, although I do try to drop in whenever a chance presents itself. Starstuff (Owl me!) 18:28, August 8, 2013 (UTC)
Re: Danniesen - I completely agree. If you felt his conduct was out-of-line, then it's perfectly reasonable to block him. As has been noted, he had been warned before and was on probation, yet continued to edit in ways that cannot be considered acceptable, such as edit-warring and creating entirely unnecessary pages. Dream Messenger Page

Dear Starstuff

In noticed you deleted the Dream Messenger Page since it would be fanon. I think I would need to correct you on that: the Dream Messenger is a canonically created concept, written about by JK Rowling in the Pottermore-facts you can find in one of the new Bloomsburry editions. See picture below

Pottermore 4

Did you know...

LeviosaJinx1267 (talk) 05:47, September 1, 2014 (UTC)
Hi! Sorry for the very tardy reply. I've recreated the Dream Messenger article. :) - Starstuff (Owl me!) 02:31, November 4, 2014 (UTC)

Could you check something

A while ago you deleted a couple of fanon articles (Ashley Steele & Isabelle Cinderford) claiming to be for characters from the PS2 version of POA, stating "Does not appear in the list of students that can be read by going into the resource files". Could you check on these names as well?

Lorraine Levi, Louise Levi, Virginia Haven, Virginia Heaven

I have a strong suspicion that these are similar fanon pages being created by at least 4 sock-puppets, but I'd like to verify it first. Thanks. - Nick O'Demus 15:51, November 4, 2014 (UTC)

None of those names appear in the POA PS2 resource file. I agree that they're definitely fanon. - Starstuff (Owl me!) 01:35, November 6, 2014 (UTC)

New article layout prototype

Hello! I thought I would ask your opinion, since I was contacted by Wiki to know how our wiki feels about their new proposed article layout. There are already two example communities you can check out, American Horror Story Wiki and TARDIS Data Core; a live test of the new article prototype design (changes are confined to article pages, for comparison).

I would like to tell Wikia what we (admins) think, since they tell me they are hoping to get more example communities before the holidays start (Dec 24th). They are looking for any kind of feedback, so it would be great to hear any input from you. --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 23:54, December 19, 2014 (UTC)

I'm curious

Hi, Starstuff! I saw that you removed the categories "Prewett family" and sometimes also "Weasley family" from a lot of articles. I was surprised because they are related either by birth or by marriage to the mentioned characters. Ridiculous is Dominique belongs to the "Delacour family" but Louis Weasley not and Rose Weasley not to the "Granger family"?

Can you tell me the rule until which degree a person belongs to a family category? I would appreciate. Thank you!

Harry granger   Talk   contribs 10:45, June 18, 2015 (UTC)

Family categories include everyone who was born into a particular family and women who married into the family. That's because we're adhering to the patrilineal system of descent that's found in the books and has historically been used in the UK. Under the patrinlineal system, Ginny is considered a member of the the Weasley family because she was born to a Weasley father, and also a member of the Potter family because she married a Potter husband. But Harry isn't considered a Weasley because, under the patrilineal system, men don't become a part of their wife's family on marriage, unlike women, who become a part of their husband's family. In the patrilineal system, children are born into their father's family, but not their mother's. Thus, Hugo and Rose are considered part of the Weasley family, but not the Granger family.
Dominique Weasley doesn't belong in the "Delacour family" for that reason. The failure to remove her from that category was an oversight on my part. - Starstuff (Owl me!) 22:34, July 13, 2015 (UTC)
Oh, I see, the legally point is more important and not the bloodline. Okay, I've understood!  Harry granger   Talk   contribs 10:58, July 14, 2015 (UTC)

New Infobox Feature Beta Testing

Apparently, Wikia wants us to help test out a new reworking of the infobox structure to make them more compatible with viewing on mobile devices. I'm no expert on coding, so I can't say how this will play out. You can read more about the proposal here and here. - Nick O'Demus 00:31, June 20, 2015 (UTC)

I'm not an expert on coding, either, and I'm no longer able to contribute as much as in the past, so I unfortunately don't see myself having the time or know-how needed to help make this happen. But I personally think it would be great having experienced coders/designers help us modernize the wiki's look. - Starstuff (Owl me!) 23:41, July 13, 2015 (UTC)

Ahhhh. Very well. I messaged Seth yesterday to edit the Potter Family Tree. Henry Potter, his wife, his father and his mother all need adding to it. Henry is Fleamont's father, so they need to be added for completions sake. I don't know how that template works, so... --HarryPotterRules1 (talk) 00:14, September 24, 2015 (UTC)

Neither do I, unfortunately. I tried updating it yesterday, but I only broke the template. I'm not sure who around here knows how to edit it. - Starstuff (Owl me!) 00:32, September 24, 2015 (UTC)

I much prefer the Family Tree template (see Scamander family) to the one used there and if I could make all that fit, I would. --HarryPotterRules1 (talk) 00:37, September 24, 2015 (UTC)

Ugh, that template is way too complicated (either that, or I'm not well-versed enough in family tree templates, mind, I only taught myself how they work by tinkering with some of them in the past). I think I did it. --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 01:08, September 24, 2015 (UTC)
Looks good. Although I think there should be a "many generations" tag between Corvinus Gaunt and Marvolo Gaunt. I don't think it's been stated anywhere that Corvinus was Marvolo's father. Pottermore only describes Corvinus as an "antecedent of Tom Riddle." - Starstuff (Owl me!) 01:43, September 24, 2015 (UTC)

Aye - and we need a "distant relative" or "many generations" thing to lead to Ralston from another branch. --HarryPotterRules1 (talk) 02:17, September 24, 2015 (UTC)

Captcha

The Captcha doesn't seem to work. I tried to make an update to a page, clicked I'm not a robot and it wouldn't let me click on any of the examples. Cookiesplosion (talk) 16:43, September 24, 2015 (UTC)

Do you know a fix for this? Does it not work in chrome? Do I need an add-on? Cookiesplosion (talk) 17:09, September 24, 2015 (UTC)

I don't know how to resolve the issue you're encountering, unfortunately. I've never had to enter a Captcha to make edits, and I presume that it's something that is handled at a deeper level of the Wikia framework than is accessible to those who run/admin individual wikis. I'd recommend reporting the issue at Community Central. - Starstuff (Owl me!) 17:39, September 24, 2015 (UTC)

No-Maj

Starstuff, is the term no-maj identical to the term muggle, or is no-maj the American term for both muggle and squib? If it is the former, the Muggle entry is correct. If it is the latter, then the entry needs to be changed. (Vaudree (talk) 11:07, November 22, 2015 (UTC))

I can't say. The press for the Fantastic Beasts movie has so far reported that "No-Maj" is the U.S. word for "Muggle." Anything else is speculation at this point. - Starstuff (Owl me!) 05:33, November 23, 2015 (UTC)

Thanks - will wait for more info. (Vaudree (talk) 08:03, November 23, 2015 (UTC))

What is a Template?

I just tried to see whether changing the http would create a disambiguation page it worked, there was an error and asked a mod to fix it. 95% of what I put on talk pages are suggestions for disambiguation pages and etymology stubs - mostly the former since most of my notes are on the old computer and until my son gets around to fixing Hotmail back to the way it was, it takes me 4-5 hours to send one e-mail to myself from the old computer (rather than the usual half an hour) and that is where most of the etymology is. Don't know what a template is - is it the same as a code? Other than knowing you can change https by hand and using find to reduce eyestrain, I am pretty computer illiterate.

Would you prefer a partial incomplete etymology on the talk page or put up in the entry? Would you prefer that I try to do disambiguation pages (leaving the codes for someone else) or just put a note in talk for someone else to do it? Other than a few notes for Dakota (surname) that I will put up which ever place you decide today, more focused on getting the names together which gives a delay to work this out of a few weeks. A third possibility is sending someone (your pick) a list of duplicate given names that don't have their own disambiguation page up yet. The fourth possibility is the one not thought up yet. You tell me which of these four options you prefer. (Vaudree (talk) 00:50, December 7, 2015 (UTC))

1. Templates are used for things like infoboxes and stub tags that are reproduced on many pages. The code required to get these things to look and function the way they do is generally rather advanced. It would take up a lot of space if we had to reproduce the full code of a template on every page on which we wanted to use it. So instead the full code of templates is hidden away somewhere out of sight, and users who want to use a template in an article can just insert the template's name between two sets of curly brackets. This will draw the template's code from where it's stored and make the template appear in the article. More advanced templates like infoboxes will also have editable fields in which you can insert custom information. But the simpler templates can be called up in articles by using the template's name between two sets of curly brackets. For example, {{disambig}} should be placed at the top of every disambiguation page, as it will bring up a boilerplate message explaining what a disambiguation page is.
2. Etymological information belongs on character and family articles. It's fine to reproduce the same information across multiple article -- for example, cut-and-pasting the same etymology of John onto every article on a character named John. Disambiguation pages should contain nothing but links to articles.
3. It's fine if you create disambiguation pages and add etymologies to articles. Just please make sure that you add etymologies in the correct place, and that your additions are properly formatted. Because otherwise it's just creating more work for the person who has to come in to set things in order. If you need to experiment to get an idea of how things work, you can use the community sandbox, or create a special page in your own userspace in which you can work on things before posting them to articles. Just don't perform test edits in articles, and don't leave personal comments/notes in articles, as you did on Quintius (disambiguation) ("Add something about the -ius suffix and what it means later"). We want to offer the Harry Potter resource we can to readers and blemishes like this do not help us so far as quality goes. It's also fine to post information you think should be added to the article on the talk page -- although that's no guarantee that someone will see your suggestion and act on it, as we unfortunately have a small user base. It's just that posts like this will leave most people scratching their heads. It's just a long list of article names, and it isn't clear why you're posting it there, or what you want people to do with it. Starstuff (Owl me!) 03:36, December 7, 2015 (UTC)

Put {{disambig}} into notepad so it can be cut and pasted into a disambiguation. Is it ok if all articles link to the relevant disambiguation page - (ie the ones with the same given names)?

Probably best to put the etymology in the talk section from the sounds of it - sounds complicated. Or maybe a footnoted version of the etymology in names for proof and edit out the footnotes before putting it in the article so that the only codes are bold and double bracket?

Miraphora is about getting rid of possible duplicate character entries.

There must be about 20 different characters - all of them in the films - named for Harry Potter film graphic artists Miraphora Mina [1] and Eduardo Lima [2]. Since it is often hard to read the names in the movies, it is possible that two different people put the same name down but spelt it differently. There are things that I probably should not have put down - trivia mainly - but the only way to figure out whether all those characters really exist or not is to get the names together - and maybe someone curious with good eyesight will go through the films looking for them and put a couple entries for deletion.

Other than the Lima-Mina characters, the other big list of characters are named for Lauren Wakefield, who is also a graphic artist who worked on the Harry Potter films [3]. However, other than Loretta Fieldwake all the names are listed on the Wakefield family page so they are almost altogether for when someone wishes to sort them out.

If I start feeling dizzy, I may have to leave things as is and lie down - doesn't matter if I am in the middle of reading a long article or posting something. A few bad habits come from that - which I will try to work to minimize.

Got the notes for Dakota - Haley Dakota, which, like most names, turns out to be a compound word and will put up a written form when I perk up a bit. Someone can probably improve on it if they can get to a library, but got all the easy info that one can get looking on line. Focused more on "koda" / "kola" than "da" because of known search limitations and it seems mainly an amplifier. Only worked on it because they are a people who lived on the territories named after them rather than the territories themselves or the name of an actress. I feel I owe it a bit of dignity one won't get by searching Behind the Names etc but would get from looking through the onelook dictionaries and then doing general searches. (Vaudree (talk) 05:11, December 7, 2015 (UTC))

"Is it ok if all articles link to the relevant disambiguation page - (ie the ones with the same given names)?"
Articles shouldn't link to the disambiguation page unless it would help resolve legitimate confusion. For example, the article Arthur is about the legendary king, but someone entering "Arthur" into the search bar is most likely looking for the article on Arthur Weasley, so adding the {{youmay}} banner to the Arthur article is helpful. But adding the {{youmay}} banner to every single character named Bob, Ella, or Stuart would just create unnecessary clutter, as these are all minor characters and are unlikely to be confused with each other.
"Probably best to put the etymology in the talk section from the sounds of it - sounds complicated. Or maybe a footnoted version of the etymology in names for proof and edit out the footnotes before putting it in the article so that the only codes are bold and double bracket?"
I don't understand what you're asking here.
"Since it is often hard to read the names in the movies, it is possible that two different people put the same name down but spelt it differently. There are things that I probably should not have put down - trivia mainly - but the only way to figure out whether all those characters really exist or not is to get the names together - and maybe someone curious with good eyesight will go through the films looking for them and put a couple entries for deletion."
Seth Cooper and I are the ones who generally scour the movies for easter eggs that can be turned into articles. We've been doing this for years and I like to think that we've gotten good at it. Sometimes the graphic artists tweak their names a little in the easter eggs they create (for example: Eduardus Lima, Edwardus Lima, E. Limus, all of which are derived from the name of Eduardo Lima), but these variations are generally represented in the original source, not the product of user error or misinterpretation. Ok, thanks. It just seemed unusual. Sorry for any unintentional offense - and I did not understand the animousity at the time. The see Fieldwake was mine - but the Trivia error was someone elses - I don't know half those codes. Mina and Lima exist both as surnames and first names. Highlighting those in purple in my notes but will try to make it as complete as possible before handing over the list of purples. Probably won't come up with the Easter eggs, but names tend to trend in families so clues. Example Fleamont Potter where a maternal surname was used as a first name.

There are a few Name Name and Name strings where Name Name is listed as the given and surnames of one person rather than the first names of two people. Example Debbie Amy - they all seem to come out of older books. Before the printing press, there was a habit of getting rid of punctuation (ie comas) or even the spaces between words. Could be nothing. Not touching them. Those are all the weird stuff.

With three new movies, the Scottish book is a long way off - and that is the definitive on genealogical questions. There may be more of an interest in names after the first Beast movie.

Error

Should be Katrina MacDougal not Katherine [4] (Vaudree (talk) 07:44, December 7, 2015 (UTC))

Hey,

So I was just wondering, seeing as you're an admin, if you had any jobs that needed doing because I am very keen to do something for the Wiki but I find myself with nothing much to do most of the time. I am only two and a half months old on the HPW but as I said, I am very keen to help out.

Thanks a lot for the help,

Katherine redirection

Hi, do you know how to edit the redirection in Isobel MacDougal. Someone made an error and put Katherine MacDougal see Katherine (disambiguation) and redirected it to Isobel MacDougal, but the name was Katrina MacDougal see Katrina (disambiguation). How do you change the redirection from Katherine MacDougal to Katerina MacDougal so that I can delete Katherine MacDougal from the disambiguation.

I did not edit the Isobel page but left a message in the box saying what you edited.(Vaudree (talk) 04:34, December 21, 2015 (UTC))

==Does Fred Weasley have a middle name?== Someone has it down as Gideon. (Vaudree (talk) 07:21, February 5, 2016 (UTC))
