I've tagged this template for deletion, again. Not because I think it is a policy violation, but because it is unnecessary. If the user in question wants this box, then all they have to do is copy the raw code onto their page. Having a wiki template dedicated to purporting a view point that's completely false is unnaceptable, however. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talkcontribs).

Hey, so I've been mulling over some page ideas, but I'm not 100% sold that they are necessary or what to title them if they are. In Goblet of Fire there is a wizard who makes claims of being a dragon killer to impress a group of veela's, but then another wizard steps in and says that this wizard is actually a "dishwasher for the Leaky Cauldron" and that he is in fact a vampire hunter. The guy claiming to be a vampire hunter has a BTS blurp about him under the Vampire article, but the dragon killer/dishwasher has no mention, nor could I find mention of the job of dishwasher at the leaky cauldron. Any suggestions? --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 19:07, October 7, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't mean to rush you, but with the Deathly Halows: Part 1 premiere in a a month, we need an a couple FANs to become featured articles for that time, so can you help, with yor Unspeakable position? Seth Cooper and I have agreed it would be best if Elder Wand was featured on the premiere weekend, but it is your decision. Also, the FA and Featured picture need to be updated. Could you fix the featured articles logos so that they aren't ad a picture of the charactwers? Or should I ask a Sysop?--Station7 20:52, October 13, 2010 (UTC)

Hey, I checked it out also, I looked at it with all the skins, and found that if Station7 is using the new wikia look, the feature article image does appear over the main photo/info box, but not in monobook or Monaco. --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 21:38, October 13, 2010 (UTC)

Bellatrix's whip

Hey, there's been some discussion about this article, and people who were at the advanced screening have apparently confirmed it is a spell, I was going to move the page but I'm not 100% sure what the article should be titled, Unidentified whip spell, Whip spell, Bellatrix Lestrange's whip spell, etc etc. --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 15:03, October 14, 2010 (UTC)

That I would say is the largest debate, clearly in the trailer she is using a whip, the question being whether it is a real whip of her own, or a spell she produced. This is what Damien wrote: "It's from the trailer, and those who went to the advance screening of the movie have confirmed she uses this spell to take Gryffindor's Sword from the Snatchers. Damien O'Hagen 14:51, October 14, 2010 (UTC)". --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 15:15, October 14, 2010 (UTC)
If you look carefully at the image and the trailer you can clearly see the distinctive shape of her wand handle. Damien O'Hagen 15:38, October 14, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. I've just been very busy unfortunately. Have there been any major developments or new policies about which I should know? Starstuff (Owl me!) 19:24, October 18, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry for the late reply, Nick; for the video blog forum, I'd say add it to the relevant policy. Its been an informal one for a while now, so codifying it will be fine. I support it personally, although I have failed to say so on the forum. As for the inactive admin one ... I'll hold it open a little longer as I've added a small caveat about administrators gracefully resigned instead of being forcibly de-opped. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 12:42, October 19, 2010 (UTC)

Harry Potter wiki: Userboxes

Why do you see my edits as "propaganda campaign" and "gaming the system"? Is it forbidden to express fondness of a non-canonic character? Are userboxes only for canonic ones? --Fo01 07:21, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Look, you can use all the skirty rhetoric you want to claim that your fixation with Dumbledore's sexuality and his "ex-girlfriend" are objective and innocent, but in the context of reality, and specifically your history, it would be beyond ridiculous to expect anyone to believe such a thing. You're free to think what you please, of course, but it's insulting to everyone else's intelligence when you blithely deny that your actions are loaded, when they so obviously are. You've stopped just short of being overtly offensive, and you know it, so why bother pretending you don't understand what people are telling you? --Emmy () 08:12, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, Nick, but I really had to say that. --Emmy () 08:16, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Haha, I'd love to! Thanks. --Emmy () 08:29, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Dumbledore Template

I agree; I've deleted it. If he wants to recreate it using code of his user page then that's fine, but we won't take it as a template. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 12:13, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for telling me the proper voting procedure. I only uploaded a newer version of the picture of Fleur because the one that was being voted for is photoshopped. I was only putting up the official one that was actually release from WB. I can show you multiple links to where the original image was released too, if you want. RE:Verification help

That could be a mix-up of a-Chamber of Secrets (GBC) item -- Revive Potion -- whose icon is a wand emitting a few sparks. But seeing as the so-called "Healing Sparkle" is from Philosopher's Stone, I have no idea what it is. And this brings another question to mind: wouldn't the dummy/glitch items (i.e. the ones one can only gain access via GameShark) be considered canon? After all, they were included in the game (albeit not accessible via normal gameplay)... -- Seth Cooper owl post! 20:20, October 26, 2010 (UTC)

Fenwick family

Is it alright if I remove refences to Robbie Fenwick from the Fenwick family page? While there is at least one wizarding and one muggle Fenwick family known to exist, the page basically implies that they're the same family-- and that's kind of unlikely, considering Robbie is some kid Hermione Granger knew from back in the days of living among the muggles. I just wanted to ask before I made a relatively major alteration the page, small as it is. --Emmy () 19:09, October 29, 2010 (UTC)

Oh, thanks, that makes more sense than taking Robbie Fenwick off the page completely. --Emmy () 19:52, October 29, 2010 (UTC)

Hi. I'm not sure if this is the appropriate way to contact you, but I couldn't find any other way that seemed more reasonable. (This is the first time I've tried to contribute to a wiki...please don't bite the newbie!)

As you can doubtless tell from my IP address, I'm the user who attempted to make a comment on "Talk:Dark Force Defence League" a few minutes ago. I had attempted to add links to my comment, which obviously did not work out. I'm still not sure what I did wrong. (This is one reason I prefer to do stuff like this by hand rather than trusting the software to do it for me!) I reposted my comment without the attempts at linking and it seems okay this time. Thanks for pointing out the, er, bloody-confusingness of my initial effort! 20:20, October 29, 2010 (UTC)

RE: Article titles

Well, can I just point out that if you're going to attack my new articles like that and change their names to lower case, you need to have a very good look through Category:Hogwarts locations, especially Category:Staircases, where every single conjectural name in that category has full capitals. Jpkilleen 15:12, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

"Affray" in the Chamber of Secrets

Could I/you possibly change the name to "Skirmish in the Chamber of Secrets" or, I don't know... "Confrontation in the Chamber of Secrets" or something? It's really bugging me that an "affray" really implies a dispute of some sort in a public place (and in British common law is a public order offence), and the Chamber of Secrets is pretty much as far from a public space as it gets... I didn't want to just change it on my own, but I think the term affray is really all wrong. --Emmy () 16:56, November 1, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks --Emmy () 17:17, November 1, 2010 (UTC)

Human Transfiguration

Sorry to bother you again, but I've basically created an altered and expanded version of the "Self-Transfiguration" article to a "human Transfiguration" article, including different types of human transfiguration, and adding some comparisons to Metamorphmagi in addition to the comparisons to Animagi. I've also include Barty Crouch Jr. transfiguring Malfoy into a ferret and his father into a bone. Can I go ahead and move it to Human transfiguration, or should I wait...? --Emmy () 20:29, November 2, 2010 (UTC)

RE:Doctor Flitwick

I see. I thought one could consider it cut-content because Rowling didn't strike just the word "doctor" (what I'm trying to say is that Rowling didn't correct "Dr. Flitwick" as "Professor Flitwick"; but replaced "Dr. Flitwick [...]" with a new (perhaps more catchy) sentence altogether. As for Ron's claim that doctors are "Muggle nutters that cut people up", I think he's referring to "doctor" as in "physician", as we know some wizards use "doctor" as an academic title, not being necessarily physicians (i.e. Dr. Medusa, Dr Ubbly, Dr Filibuster). This would be Flitwick's case. But, of course, if you still think it should be moved to BTS, I have no objection. -- Seth Cooper owl post! 23:55, November 2, 2010 (UTC)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

Hi, Nick! What has happened to this page? With all the sources in the middle of the text it is difficult to read! Harry granger 21:47, November 3, 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I find the new Wiki has a lot of worsenings. When I use the new Wiki, I cannot see anymore which link I have already used. By the old Wiki the colour changed. That I appreciated. When I use the old form under preferences I see these differences but then I cannot see the number of my edits anymore. The one you let, the other you get! By the new Wiki I think the article gots longer because the place for the article seems to be smaller. That is not an improvement. But that is only my opinion. I don't want to say that all is worse but there are things who have worsened. But I think they will not change it back so we must live with the changings - the improvements as well as the worsenings. Harry granger 18:48, November 4, 2010 (UTC)

Looking through the transfiguration pages, I thought of something. Do we have an article on turning obkjects into others? I´d suggest the conjectural title Inanimate to inanimate transfiguration.--Rodolphus 10:07, November 6, 2010 (UTC)

Harry Potter Premiere Events

Hi Nick, This is Kacie from Wikia Entertainment. I wanted to let you know that Wikia is celebrating the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:Part 1 by giving away a trip for 4 to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, hotel and airfare included! The giveaway will launch on Harry Potter Wiki tomorrow-- we hope it will excite both old and new users and motivate everyone to participate on the wiki! Our friends over at will be helping us promote the wiki and the giveaway to the larger community of Harry Potter fans. :)

The Wizarding World giveaway runs from November 8-30. To enter the giveaway, Harry Potter fans must create an account and leave a comment on the giveaway page answering the question: "If you could spend one day in Hogwarts, what would you do?" Each comment counts as an entry, and one lucky muggle will be randomly selected from all eligible entries on December 1st. Since you're a Harry Potter expert, we need your help to come up with a special, tricky Harry Potter trivia question on the giveaway page- it will be another way for extra dedicated HP fans to enter the giveaway. Can you and the other admins help us come up with a tough trivia question (and the answer) by tomorrow?

We will also be enabling category galleries (which beautify category pages) and article comments (which allow users to comment about an article) for the giveaway and premiere. these tools have proven to facilitate conversation, engagement and collaboration on many of our wikis, including Twilight Saga Wiki and Glee Wiki. We are positive that they will help the giveaway run more smoothly, allow users to review and discuss the movie much more easily, and foster a heightened sense of community here. If you have problems with this, please let me know.

In collaboration with local San Francisco radio station 92.7 KREV, Wikia is also giving away a limited number of tickets to the midnight showing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 in Redwood City on November 18. We hope to see Bay Area Harry Potter fanatics at the Redwood City AMC theater at 11:00pm on November 18 for a local Harry Potter meetup complete with games, raffles, prizes, costumes and picture-taking! If you or any Harry Potter Wikians you know are local to the San Francisco Bay Area, please come join us as our guests of honor! Thanks so much for all of your hard work on Harry Potter Wiki. Cheers---- Kacie@fandom (talk) 00:18, November 8, 2010 (UTC)

Nick, the first few difficult but not too crazy obscure questions you listed are PERFECT. You're amazing! Can you email a couple more like that to so no one here can find the answer on my talk page? Thank you so much!! ---- Kacie@fandom (talk) 01:10, November 8, 2010 (UTC)
I got your email--thank you!! So sorry you're too far away to attend the premiere. :( ---- Kacie@fandom (talk) 16:13, November 8, 2010 (UTC)
As much as I'd like to go, I have to pass. I work a full eight-hour shift that day; tack on about an hour each way driving to and from work (which is already 10 hours), then about another hour and a half each way traveling to San Francisco and back (3 hours), it's a strain on my schedule. By the time I got home from work that next Friday, I'd have been awake for 36 hours on almost no sleep. If those were my days off, it would be a different story. --Cubs Fan (Talk to me) 21:56, November 8, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, it's a pain to be sure. Any admin can change the backround with the theme designer, but like Cavalier said, Wikia will probably want us to keep this one, as they are showcasing us in their new advert. To be honest, I think moving to a new host is an option worth exploring. Many wikis are doing so, including World of Warcraft. Even though Wikia tried to bribe them into staying by offering them increased article width (which, by the way, the didn't offer anyone else). It's not a nice feeling, putting so much hard work into building an encyclopedia, and then being forced to sit back while Wikia change into something else:( Jayden Matthews 12:01, November 9, 2010 (UTC)

RE: Hoo boy

Good god! And I suppose those who have set up this competition are expecting you admins to sort through this mess and delete all the spam and invalid entries. If there is anything I can do to help you out please let me know. On a somewhat happier note, we are a short week away from Deathly Hallows:) I've upload a moving gif graphic of Jamie Campbell Bower as the young Gellert Grindelwald. Is there any way of getting it to move in the article, without having to click on it? Jayden Matthews 22:05, November 9, 2010 (UTC)

Ah, thanks for fixing that:) Well the shoutout from Mugglenet is cool, if nothing else. I guess there's nothing else we can do. It sure is inconsiderate of Wikia to force this madness on us, and then expect you guys to clean it up. Jayden Matthews 22:29, November 9, 2010 (UTC)

I had the same problem, and I'm doing it manually by adding code to the address bar like so: name/@comment username-somenumbers'''?redirect=no&action=delete'''. Hey, I know that there's a lot going on the wikia right now, but I was thinking of maybe adding a category for "voice" actors, so to separate the actors(real world) between the movie actors and the actors who did video game voices, what do you think? --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 01:31, November 11, 2010 (UTC)

Hmmmm, true, hadn't thought about the actors who did voices in the movies. I also can't decide that the category should be called, keeping in mind that some of the actors in the movies also did voices in the video games, so Voice actors (real world) probably wouldn't be appropriate for them, ya think? --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 13:08, November 11, 2010 (UTC)

Oh that would so Rock, definitely would love a copy of the voice cast credits. One question, so if I go with "Voice actors", should I add the movie actors who voiced in the video games and actors that did voices in the movies to this category also? --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 04:10, November 19, 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for the cast credits, it will definitely be helpful. I've created the new category and started moving stuff into it. Wanted to double check, I tried to make it a sub-category of "actors real-world" but it isn't showing up, also if the actor in question is only a video game voice actor and appears in or is voiced in none of the movies, would they only be in the voice-actor category or should they remain in both? --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 23:09, November 19, 2010 (UTC)

couple more questions

Hey, I was also wondering about tables in the new wikia look, it doesn't seem to matter how they are styled with color and width, but in monobook they look like they are supposed to. Also, I want to use monobook now instead of the new wikia look, the only thing is, how do you create a page in monobook? In the new wikia look there is a link for creating a new page, and maybe I'm overlooking something, but I don't see anything like that in monobook. --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 13:22, November 11, 2010 (UTC)

Increasing our online visibility

With the recent rise in new users and contributions that has been the direct result of the current Wizarding World Giveaway, I would like us to consider increasing our visibility within the HP fan community. To this end, I am tabling the following actions for consideration:

  1. The creation of some type of "affiliates program" where we can maintain links to other HP related sites and they can link back to us through mutual agreement.
  2. The setting up of an official HPW twitter feed that all administrators would be able to access and post through (or designate a member of the admin team to use).
  3. Setting up a Facebook "fan page".

The HP community on the Internet is massive, and I think we could benefit from a higher profile. As you well know, I am against turning the site into some type of social network/forum, and I don't plan for that to change. I think that by maintaining these resources off site will allow us to better channel those users who want to engage in such activities away from the wiki and into more appropriate places. For instance, the FB fan page can be used as a social forum and image host, which will allow us to direct users there instead of dealing with them on site. Thoughts? - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 13:03, November 18, 2010 (UTC)

These are all GREAT ideas! We would love to help you get this plan in motion. -- Kacie@fandom (talk) 23:43, November 18, 2010 (UTC)

Okay, our official Facebook fan page and Twitter feed are up! Any SysOps who want admin access to either should let me know through the email function; the FB can have admins, while I will provide the Twitter log-in details to you (it is set up on a separate HPW exclusive account). Links are on the main page as well. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 12:36, November 22, 2010 (UTC)

you're welcome

I'll never understand why some people resort to such immature stunts when they are upset with someone, lol! Glad I could help! --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 13:34, November 24, 2010 (UTC)

Isn't that always the case? Got caught up in real life stuff again. Anything new I need to know? I looked at the recent changes list and gathered that there's a contest going on and that admins are having to manually delete comments posted anywhere but the contest page itself. International covers

Hi, Nick. It was probably an automatic welcome message which said I could contact you on your talk page, so I hope this doesn't bug you too much. I asked a question about cover images from non-English language versions of the Harry Potter books here, but it hasn't had any response yet. You seem to be the most active administrator here, so perhaps you could answer my question. If you have a moment, could you chime in (even if it's just to say, "Sure, go ahead" or "No, we don't want that")? Thanks! —Josiah Rowe 08:22, November 25, 2010 (UTC)

Chariy and Severus

I don´t know the English version of the film yet. In the German version, Charity reminds Severus that they are friends before she is killed. As far as I know, translations can be canon as long as they are not contradicted by the oriinal version (see Lavender Brown's parents and Baruffio's wife)--Rodolphus 15:54, November 25, 2010 (UTC)

I reported Grunny ;) --Station7 22:21, November 25, 2010 (UTC)

I've added some widely speculation to the article Abandoned trailer park. I've read it a few times on the interwebs and think that it is an entirely logical assumption. Thanks, --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 16:18, November 30, 2010 (UTC)

A user recently made this edit. [1] , Now every page that has [{1st}] on it has " Harry Potter Rulez under it " AznPride112 06:47, December 5, 2010 (UTC)

I think, in those cases, that deleting them would probably be the best course of action. They add nothing, to be honest, and we do not want articles for every single background character that was standing behind someone. I recently deleted one on two students who were sitting on the grass behind the Carrow twins from HBP. Perhaps we need some type of rule-of-thumb rule on which characters can be considered "article worthy" or not. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 14:46, December 5, 2010 (UTC)

Main Page Update

Sounds good to me. Also, the new slider is really easy for users to edit so if you want to update it, feel free :) Babyjabba@fandom 19:49, December 5, 2010 (UTC)

Voldemort's Physical Transformations

Hey, User:Paraknight just edited Tom Riddle arguing that creating Horcruxes didn't make Voldemort have his snake-like face or eyes, b/c when he visited Dumbledore he didn't look like that (Paraknight is assuming he had created all 5 pre-1979 Horcruxes at this point, which is uncertain, though if he placed the finish diadem in the castle that night it is quite a convincing argument). I'm not sure we can use this logic, because he might not have created them all by that point. What do you think? --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 04:35, December 6, 2010 (UTC)

Hey, not to butt in but I was just reading through the part in the book when Riddle visits Dumbledore about a job, "Harry let out a hastily stifled gasp. Voldemort had entered the room. His features were not those Harry had seen emerge from the great stone cauldron almost two years ago: They were not as snake-like, the eyes were not yet scarlet, the face not yet masklike, and yet he was no longer handsome Tom Riddle. It was as though his features had been burned and blurred; they were waxy and oddly distorted, and the whites of the eyes now had a permanently bloody look, though the pupils were not yet the slits that Harry knew they would become. He was wearing a long black cloak, and his face was as pale as the snow glistening on his shoulders. So as he didn't look exactly like he ended up looking, it seems to me it was a progression of changes, I always interpreted as each time he mangled his soul, his outward appearances took on a more and more less human look. Later in that chapter it says, " He looked less like Tom Riddle than ever." --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 13:08, December 6, 2010 (UTC)

Unidentified lethal curse

The discussion is still ongoing. Canonocial matters are not decided on by majority vote, but by carefull examination of the evidence. This isn't "rule by the mob". Please join the conversation yourself if you have something to say. 12:26, December 11, 2010 (UTC)

Woah! That's ... long. Give me a few days too read through it all! Oh, by the way, sorry I've not been around much lately. I've been fighting for my right to a university education:) Jayden Matthews 13:22, December 11, 2010 (UTC)

Loooong story, had a bit of a break down after having a fight with the spouse (I like to call it cabin fever after having been stuck at home since August with no car and no job), back now, fixed my user page, but can't figure out how to fix the talk page. --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 14:05, December 11, 2010 (UTC)

Thank you!!!! :-) --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 13:37, December 12, 2010 (UTC)

Have I done somthing wrong? I'm sorry, I didn't know...I'm obviously not aware of all these rules. Sorrry! *Luna 23:11, December 11, 2010 (UTC)

Would you agree with me that the abbreviation comparisons in the BTS of Dumbledore's Army is just getting ridiculous? --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 03:47, December 12, 2010 (UTC)

Re: voting

I guess I feel uncomfortable editing things because I don't want to do anything wrong...Plus, most of them are so well written they don't need nay editing. Trust me, I've looked for things I could help with :) *Luna 22:54, December 12, 2010 (UTC)

By the way, what do you mean by "clean up"? I looked at the page and I don't understand what it means or what I can do to help. *Luna 23:01, December 12, 2010 (UTC)

How do you become an administrator? just wondering... Redwoodwand 19:36, December 13, 2010 (UTC)

Yes it does, thank you! Redwoodwand 20:13, December 13, 2010 (UTC)

Dark Arts

Hey, I had a couple of questions about the Dark Arts page I was wondering if you could clear up for me.... :-) First off there's a picture of Polyjuice potion on the page, but I do not see polyjuice potion listed as a dark potion. So if it's not a dark potion I'm thinking the picture should be removed, and if it is a dark potion then shouldn't anyone known to have brewed it be listed as known practitioners of the dark arts (i.e. Hermione and Moody). Also, on the talk page there was discussion as to whether Harry and Dolores warranted being listed, the way the talk page was left I thought it was left they shouldn't be. Now Harry probably should, I'm a little unclear why Umbridge is, I mean she only almost used crucio, when she sent the dementors after Harry they were technically under ministry control, and if the blood quill constituted as dark arts, then shouldn't the quill be listed on the page? Also didn't Minerva use Imperio on the Carrow twins in the Ravenclaw tower? Oh, and when did Dumbledore use dark arts? --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 23:23, December 13, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, I'll help in any way I can. Would it be alright if I created a page I found missing? If not, I'll delete it. *LunaRavenclawcrest(Talk) 23:51, December 13, 2010 (UTC)

Harrypotter template change needed

I was going to make this change myself, until I noticed the coding on the Harrypotter template is a bit too complicated and I don't want to mess it up. The section "Other written works" is supposed to be for canon only - spin-off writings and the like. The Harry Potter Film Wizardry book doesn't belong in that section - it should be in the "Other films/documentaries" section (perhaps add "/non-fiction books" to the header). Otherwise there's nothing stopping someone from creating articles on other books related to Harry Potter (official or not) and adding them and making it harder to find, at a glance, all the official canon spinoff works. Perhaps the word "(canon)" should be added to the "Other written works" header as well. I have no problem with the proposed Encyclopedia being included right now as that's supposed to be JKR's equivalent of the Silmarillion so whatever she does with that will be considered canon. Anyway, I'm asking this of you as you were the editor who put the protection on the template, so hopefully you can play around with the formatting without messing it up. Cheers! 23skidoo 22:19, December 14, 2010 (UTC)

Hey, an unregistered user just made some serious changes to Bartemius Crouch Jr.. Basically the sum of which cast doubt upon his guilt in the incapacitation of the Longbottoms. Among other things. I don't know if the user has a point or not, and I don't want to straight up revert the edit if there's some credence to it. Let me know what you think. --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 15:33, December 26, 2010 (UTC)
