Harry Potter

I asked Ratneer to look at this too, but can you take a look at the Ginny Weasley relationship section on Harry's page. An unregistered user put some information about how long Harry and Ginny dated and when Harry proposed. I questioned the user, but got no response. Hcoknhoj 07:48, January 3, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I didn't think that was canon, but I never quite know, because Rowling still gives interviews and the like. Thanks, Hcoknhoj 07:54, January 3, 2010 (UTC)

Unidentified Lethal Curse

An unregistered user keeps setting Unidentified Lethal Curse to be merged with the article on Sirius Black stating that the entire article is conjecture. While I can see moving it or changing it, I cannot see merging it with Sirius Black. If you could look at it that would be great. Thanks Hcoknhoj 05:55, January 4, 2010 (UTC)

The merge is back on Unidentified Lethal Curse from the unregistered user. Thanks, --Hcoknhoj 05:59, January 5, 2010 (UTC)

Seth Cooper's user page

Seth Cooper joked yesterday, I think he joked, but he said that everybody could edit his page. So think you, that he likes it, if I edit his user page from the section: Created Articles. You can trust me! I have edit Scarletmoon579's user page to, it's still there.--Station7 11:28, January 4, 2010 (UTC)

I think it was just a joke from Seth Cooper to Grounchman.--Station7 12:02, January 4, 2010 (UTC)

No, it was not a joke, Nick O'Demus. But if someone's is editing his page, is it me. He said that's good to edit his page and that he was not making a joke.--Station7 11:19, January 9, 2010 (UTC)

RE:New user help

I will, but, to be honest, I'm thinking about quiting. Jayden Matthews 09:56, January 6, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, just one thing and another. I used to be really physically active but, over the past few months this has become my main hobby. And although I enjoy this, it's very addictive. I'd just rather be getting out and doing real stuff. Jayden Matthews 10:24, January 6, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks!

Thanks for the badge, Nick! User:Quirinus Quirrell

Ollivander

Hey I'm just wondering... I'm new here and all. Why did you undo the edit I made to Ollivander under the dialogue about him not knowing about the Deathly Hallows in the seventh book. Did I not cite it properly?

Lavender

I still think that article has too many spaces, but I know Pott3rfan will just put them back. --Hcoknhoj 07:43, January 10, 2010 (UTC)

Viktor Krum

As much as I hate the "Relationships" section, do you think that a few people need to be added to Viktor Krum's page (ie. Harry, Diggory, Ron)? --Hcoknhoj 18:59, January 10, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for helping me get rid of that category of the Elder Wand. Would have been bad for it's status

Sirius Black

Some unregistered user went all through his biography adding full names in places where a reader with any brains at all can tell who we were talking about. It seems really pretentious now, but he is still on and I know if I change it now, he'll just change it back, so can you look through that later please? --Hcoknhoj 05:16, January 11, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. There hasn't been any movement on my application for Rollback, so I go to people I know can fix it. --Hcoknhoj 06:24, January 11, 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, will do. --Hcoknhoj 07:29, January 11, 2010 (UTC)

Marauders

Is it known whether or not they called themselves this? I mean the map's name is singular and could describe any individual using the map. --Hcoknhoj 08:52, January 11, 2010 (UTC)

Cool. --Hcoknhoj 09:03, January 11, 2010 (UTC)

Limbo

Voldemort did know he was taking the protection. Remember, he could now touch Harry with feeling pain. --Hcoknhoj 15:26, January 11, 2010 (UTC)

Spring Semester

Is it just me or do you notice this too? When an event occurs during the spring or summer term, the articles often still list the previous year as the year in which the event occurred. Not like the top of the articles, but in quotes and the like. For instance, Harry and Ron go looking for Aragog in the Spring term of their second year. This event takes place in 1993, not 1992, but twice in the past 5 minutes I've had to change it. --Hcoknhoj 07:54, January 13, 2010 (UTC)

Vandal

User at 96.250.239.7 is a vandal. He keeps making disparaging comments on the JK Rowling page. --Hcoknhoj 03:18, January 14, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, that is helpful. Hcoknhoj 04:01, January 14, 2010 (UTC)

Harry Potter Wiki Twitter account

Hello Nick, i just want to inform you that recently i created a Twitter account dedicated to Harry Potter Wiki; The username is @HPWiki. What do you think about it? And also, please let me know if you also have a twitter account. --ÈnŔîčö DCRavenclawcrest(Send me an Owl!) 07:03, January 18, 2010 (UTC)

Fifth Year

Should the events under the subheading Harry's Fifth Year be in past tense? --Hcoknhoj 06:48, January 20, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, I'll go ahead and makes those changes. --Hcoknhoj 07:01, January 20, 2010 (UTC)

Month Pages

Do you think it is a good idea to create like a Important Wizarding events bloc in each month's article detailing the really important goings on? --Hcoknhoj 07:13, January 20, 2010 (UTC)

How to create category?

Hi Nick. I need to know how one can create a new category. I wanted to create one.Remusblack 11:23, January 20, 2010 (UTC)

Order

Thank you for the Order of Merlin, firsr class.--Rodolphus 14:11, January 20, 2010 (UTC)

Patronus

I think my title summed up the event better, I started the article, because I couldn't find the one you redirected to. Btw, thanks for the Order of Merlin. --Hcoknhoj 08:21, January 22, 2010 (UTC)

Well, I am lengthening the article on the page Patronus (class). Making it more detailed and giving it some context. --Hcoknhoj 08:41, January 22, 2010 (UTC)

Administrators on this Wikia

Hello Nick O'Demus. If I got all the Adminisitrators an own award, then it would be because you listen, you take immediality care of vandalism and delete pages immediality. Since I'm a lost-fan, this site has been my number 1 (for now, because the theories are to many and here are no theories). So guys, all of you're the best. This is the best Wikia. After all I have respect for all of you (the administrators). I always want to say this.--Station7 18:34, January 24, 2010 (UTC)

Yes, I see it. But your very much time active on this Wikia and I always thought that you was an Admin. Yes, I'm glad with my second class of Order of Merlin. I will help this Wikia...is that the last thing I do.--Station7 18:49, January 24, 2010 (UTC)

Wands

Please don't remove the lengths from wand articles. They are canon because no higher source contradicts them. They are judged on a case by case basis just like everything else from the movies. 86.170.171.95 18:53, January 24, 2010 (UTC)

Fair enough. Also, sorry to contradict you, but the noble collection version of Ron's wand is 14" inches, just like the book one. 86.170.171.95 19:03, January 24, 2010 (UTC)

How do I edit a created template?

I'm trying to submit a dialouge a-b-a on the quotes page but I can't edit it, I can only edit other's template. It was inserted and then it wrote - the template doesn't exist. But if I click on the quotes template on the frequently used template then I have no problem at all, except that the phrase I want to insert is a dialouge. And there are some of them who didn't know how to use a template either and are messing up the page. I'm trying to clean up without any success. RE: Question

Thanks for bring this to my attention. Wikia does indeed have ways of checking sock puppet accounts, and I will bring these users to their attention and see what they say on the matter. If you suspect any other users of sockpuppetry, don't hesitate to bring it to my attention :) - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 10:48, February 2, 2010 (UTC)

If it's paranoid and suspicious, then we are of a like mind. I try to keep an eye out for things like this myself. If the users have openly stated they have multiple accounts, then its okay, but if you could list them here so I am aware of them, I can check them in case of voting issues in the future. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 11:12, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
You're not paranoid, I was worried about Mouldywart and Robbiefenwick as well. --Hcoknhoj 12:39, February 2, 2010 (UTC)
I had the results back from Wikia, and the results are ... interesting to say the least. I do not wish to discuss it openly for now, but I am investigating other users as the check showed up several other user names apparently operating from the same IP address. The results may cause some votes to be nullified, and I am investigating the impact it would cause at the moment. As for Famini, if she's admitted to multiple accounts and they are for her and husband, I see no problem as long as they're not used on votes, or for vandalism. I would list them at multiple accounts to be sure, noting the reason why. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 11:56, February 12, 2010 (UTC)

I have to admit, I do have a second account that I have used in some voting, after I have voted, but I will get rid of those votes immediately. The account is HarryPotter512. Multiple accounts

Hi. Just to let you know that it's possible that I edit sometimes some pages with another account: it's not really a second account, it's my husband's account. He's not an usual editor on Wikia but he has his own account and it's possible that I don't see his account is connected when I edit some pages. His name on Wikia is Jmini. --{{SUBST:Utilisateur:Famini71/autosig}} 11:34, February 2, 2010 (UTC) Famini71

OOU Policy

Now that it looks like the Infobox vote is going to be over, do you think you can help me drum up interest in the OOU Policy discussion started a couple of weeks ago about the book and movie articles? I mean I want this to be a robust discussion, but no one has really put in their two-cents worth. Thanks, --Hcoknhoj 22:10, February 12, 2010 (UTC)

Alright, thanks. I had suspicions myself. I mean we can get some ideas flowing on the OOU discussion in the interim. I wouldn't ask for a vote until he has finished anyway. --Hcoknhoj 22:37, February 12, 2010 (UTC)

Harry Potter

I looked back at the edits User:Johnnysparrow made to the Duellest section. While I thought his edits were extravagant and and as you said really stretching it, I think he has a point though. We don't really give Harry the credit he deserves. There is a paragraph twice as long talking about Hermione's duelling ability and JKR has said that after their 3rd year, Harry would defeat her in a duel. --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 14:01, February 23, 2010 (UTC)

Nice one with the Userbox. I'll put it on my page.
Back to Harry Potter, you are right User:Johnnysparrow took it too far in praise of Harry, but I think the Duel with Snape goes to prove more about Snape's mastery than Harry's lack of skill. You also have to keep in mind that Snape was reading Harry's mind and that is why he knew what spells were coming. I'll take a look at it and see if I can do him justice without unnecessary embellishment.
Yeah, I saw the Sock Puppets get banned. It was really suspicious when they appeared on there, but good riddance to bad rubbish. I'll see what I can do about getting discussion on OOU going again, but I'm going to need help there.

--JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 17:11, February 23, 2010 (UTC)

How about this:

Skilled Duellist: Harry was able to hold his own against Death Eaters even at a young age. In many battles of the Second Wizarding War, he was able to incapacitate much more experienced wizards, and during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, he was alone among the six D.A. members to be neither injured nor incapacitated and, along with Dumbledore and Remus Lupin, was the only fighter on their side not to be injured or incapacitated. He was known to be very quick off the draw and had a very aggressive duelling style even incorporating Unforgivable curses. Harry also survived multiple confrontations with Lord Voldemort himself, eventually defeating him.

--JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 17:37, February 23, 2010 (UTC)

Re:Infobox Alias policy

I've updated all character infoboxes to conform with the policy change. However, I've kept the field name the same (i.e. "alias=", not "aka="), as changing it meant that that none of the data currently inputted in "alias=" fields in articles would show up. So, basically, all I've done is a cosmetic change, so that the "alias=" field is now displayed under "Also known as" instead of "Alias" in the infobox table. If you want to change the field name, it would require us to change "alias=" to "aka=" in hundreds of articles, so I thought I'd take the path of least resistance for the time being.

I moved Harry Potter Wiki:Character infobox family guidelines policy to Harry Potter Wiki:Character infobox guidelines, and updated the shortcuts in Template:Policytable, HPW:CIFG, and on the menu under the site icon at the left.

I'll be busy tomorrow, but if you'd like to share your ideas for the policy rewording, feel free to do so. Thanks! Starstuff (Owl me!) 05:32, February 25, 2010 (UTC)

If above user is correct, then are all votes opened by you therefore illegal (ie the Infobox vote)? --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 10:16, March 2, 2010 (UTC)
The vote is automatically non-valid according to policy. Just because people have broke the rules in the past, doesn't mean they should continue to do so. 86.171.139.52 10:20, March 2, 2010 (UTC)

While it is true that this is his first block on this wiki, GrouchMan has been given multiple warnings and requests to stop this behaviour. He has not heeded them, and continued his actions. Magic genetics

Dear mr. O'Demus,

I notice you reverted my change on the half-bloods page - that is the sentence is back to "Due to the dominance of the magic gene,".

Agreed that JKRowling took so many liberties with the settings in the Harry Potter series for the sake of telling a good story, that any discussion on "magic genetics" is quite futile (except for fun), but it is by no means proven that only one gene with just two or three varians controls the expression of magical abilities.

Two points can be made, one embriological, the other of population genetics.

The developmental point is that the brain (on the admittedly unproven but logical assumption that magical abilities stem from it) develops through the concerted and sequential activation and inactivation of many genes. That is, a brain develops a certain way simply because too many genes are involved in its development, and these genes can't vary too much without said brain failing more or less miserably to grow and work properly. That is, either the wizard is the basic model of human beings, and therefore failure to express magic (whether Muggle or Squib) should be accompanied by any number of neurological anomalies, or the Muggle is basic, and therefore wizards should have a significant number of neurological abnormalities. Also body abnormalities should be expected, since the same genes are often expressed differently in different cell lines, influencing different body parts. A way out of this, is that a number of both genes and gene variants control the expression of magical abilities so that an (usually) sound brain and body can develop, with a few individuals able to do magic, and many unable to do so. Extra-chromosomal heredity and non-genetic factors may also be implied, further complicating the issue. This also implies that perhaps the difference between Muggles and Squibs may be inhexistent, since a muggleborn wizard may stem from the chance combinations of the right genes, extrachromosomal heredic and non genetic factors, while a Squib is born whenever said combination is disrupted.

The population genetics'point stems partly from the above, since the regulation of brain development and of magic expression require the right combination of genes and variants. It is furthermore implied in the books that magic goes way back in history, that probably appeared among the pre-human ancestors of muggles and wizards; given the fact that both animals and plants have magical properties, magic may have appeared even before the appearance of multicellular living beings. Since this means that magic may have been around for five or six hundred million years, there has been plenty of time for genetical polimorphism to have appeared - each species, human, animal, plant, should show any number of gene variants. Therefore, magic expression should depend on a certain number of gene and gene variant combinations, while not by others,

So, when I inserted that question marked plural, I did so because there were a few compelling reasons to do so.

Thank you for your time,

Hello Nick. Can you please check some edits I made to Gellert Grindelwald's page yesterday. I ask because my spelling/grammar is not good, and I tried to do the refrence tag thing but I dont think it worked. I've already asked an admin, but he ignored me. Thanks. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 86.171.139.95 (talkcontribs).

Thank you. There are other lines in Grindelwald's article that need to be rectified according to Rowling's statement. And probably others in Dumbledore's. 86.171.139.95 10:48, March 14, 2010 (UTC)

Possibly Redundant Article

Do you think Minister for Magic and Support Staff is redundant, or maybe should be changed to something like "The Office of the Minister for Magic" and make changes to reflect that? --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 19:36, March 19, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, that would work. --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 04:53, March 22, 2010 (UTC)

blogs' content

Nick, in order not to bother JKoch too much, may I ask you what goes into the blogs?By what little I have gleaned from the ones I've checked, just about anything seems to be going, as long as Potterverse-related and not offensive or flaming. It would therefore be the perfect outlet for what I would like to contribute, (i.e. the genetics issues I started with), and has no place in the wikia proper. Many thanks! House Points game

Hey, when should we start the House Points game up again? It has not been active for quite a few months now.--L.V.K.T.V.J.Hogwarts(Send an owl!) 21:33, March 20, 2010 (UTC)

Susan Bones

Can you look at the introductory paragraph. It is so bad that I have no idea where to begin fixing it. --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 04:12, March 21, 2010 (UTC)

Also, there seems to be a considerable amount of speculation (look at the bottom of Sixth year). --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 04:21, March 21, 2010 (UTC)

8th Horcrux

I'm not sure. I've never really been happy about the proliferation of these pages, to be honest. An article on Wizard Rock is acceptable, and maybe some of the more notable bands, but an article for every band? I'm not so sure. As you say, there is the risk of self-promotion and advertising. I may have to submit a proposal to limit the number of Wizard Rock articles. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 10:37, March 22, 2010 (UTC)

Well, since you seem to know more about it than me since its a phenomenon that we apparently do not have here in England, maybe you would like to draft some notability guidelines for Wizard Rock bands? I confess it is one of the Potter crazes that passed me by. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 11:02, March 22, 2010 (UTC)

Do you think someone should point out that without constructive article contribs, she won't be able to vote and have any of the other privileges that users with 100, 200, 300, etc edits can have? --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 23:54, March 28, 2010 (UTC)
