Thx for the heads up about Minerva (oh, she would blast me with her wand for trying to edit before I've had enough morning coffee - actually, all she has to do is give me one of her stares; I think they are deadlier than her wand) Wonka2011 18:18, October 10, 2011 (UTC)

Albus Potter

It was a stylistic thing; the page is image-overdosed, and it really showed - some of the images were even overwriting the text. Hence, I made most of the images smaller (200px or below) to make it all fit nicely and neatly in.Green Zubat 21:37, July 25, 2011 (UTC)

Snape

I think you misunderstand the concept of "dark" with regards to the HP universe. Dark does not mean evil, something that is dark is simply something associated with dark magic, hence, a dark wizard is one whom prefers to study the Dark Arts (and we all know Snape was highly enthusiastic towards that branch of magic). His morality does not come into the question. Therefore, Snape was a dark wizard. Green Zubat 14:45, August 7, 2011 (UTC)

I see what you mean, but no, I don't think using those curses would make Harry a dark wizard. A dark wizard is one who not only studies dark magic (as all students invariably do, as part of the Hogwarts curriculum at the very least) but studies it with a fervour, focusing primarily on the Dark Arts and pushing other branches of magic from the fore, coming to specialise in it. This is why I said Snape = dark wizard because he was very enthusiastic about dark magic, not because he studied it.

Harry (and other witches and wizards of the series known to have used some dark magic in their time, like Ginny) are not dark because they don't really focus on it. At the most they've only cast a hadnful of dark spells, but they don't associate with dark creatues nor do they collect/use dark objects (both of which Umbridge, a dark witch, did). Yes, Harry used the unforgivables but he only used the Imperius curse (out of need) and the Cruciatus in emotonally charged (and arguably righteous) circumstances, and even then he only used those a handful of times (unlike Voldy, who carelessly dished them out on a regular basis).

However, as I mentioned dark =/= evil. In fact, I don't think it a stretch to say that very little magic is entirely evil in HP. Even the Killing Curse can be used to righteous ends (e.g. Snape killing Dumbledore, use in self-defence, etc.). Yet, some other branches of magic can be used to evil ends (such as Stunning, which can kill if overused). Magic is on the whole not inherently evil (exceptions include the Horcrux, which does require an evil deed to be performed), not even dark magic and as such the practitioners should not be considered evil either. Green Zubat 15:32, August 7, 2011 (UTC)

Also, I would like to apologise in the case that I came across as rude in my edit (with the "don't lie" bit); I just thought you were one of those Snapewives who think poor Sevvy is absolutely infallible and OMG how dare someone accuse him of being dark/evil. I really like Snape as a character, but I do not hesitate to acknowledge his affair with the dark side (why would I? It provides integral depth to his character). Green Zubat 15:37, August 7, 2011 (UTC)

Thats exactly my point, well said :) Green Zubat 15:58, August 7, 2011 (UTC).

Re: Infobox help

Thanks for the info, but if you're using the TEMPLATE, (as opposed to typing out the full infobox like name= Snape or wand=Severus Snape's wand) where do you type the name? The text for the infobox has disappeared on my page and it's left a template instead. Sorry, I'm not really too good with these things. -HoboHunter28- (Leave me an owl!) 23:17, August 19, 2011 (UTC)

Common room images

I wasn't aware the picture had changed ... looking at it now, I see the file names are similar. I reverted the edit since it removed the name field from the article. I have no preference either way on which image is used :) - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 19:10, August 22, 2011 (UTC)

Nope, no objections. I like uniformity, though. All relevant articles should use similar pictures if possible. I assume the new images are from Pottermore, so they are "newer", and show us the Hufflepuff common room for the first time outside the Lego game. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 19:25, August 22, 2011 (UTC)

Infobox colours

They're a bit pastel, but not too bad. You might start up a forum to see what others think about it. - Nick O'Demus 02:18, August 29, 2011 (UTC)

Re:Userboxes

I presume you're asking whether a userbox created on another wiki will work here on the Harry Potter Wiki. There needs to be a copy of the userbox template here on the HPW for it to show up when you use it on your userpage. So, if you edit Wookieepedia and it has a Beatles fan userbox called "Template:User beatles," putting {{User beatles}} on your userpage here on the Harry Potter Wiki won't make the userbox show up because the template is in Wookieepedia's database, but it isn't in Harry Potter Wiki's. You'd have to create a copy of "Template:User beatles" on HPW if you want to use it on the HPW. Starstuff (Owl me!) 20:25, September 2, 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry the above answer wasn't what you wanted to know. Maybe if you try rephrasing the question with more detail I can help you better. Starstuff (Owl me!) 20:45, September 2, 2011 (UTC)
It's possible to create templates that can be customized if you know how to work with advanced code. I created an Animagus userbox here that lets users enter their own image and animal form. That way it isn't necessary to create a new userbox for every animal form that someone wants to have.
Below is what the code for this userbox would look like with your data added:
{{User Animagus Form|File:Unicorn.jpg|unicorn}}
Starstuff (Owl me!) 21:27, September 2, 2011 (UTC)
In that case it would be easiest to just create another userbox. Copy the code from Template:User edits and paste it onto a new template page (Template:User edits 3), then remove the "over." Starstuff (Owl me!) 22:24, September 2, 2011 (UTC)

Lestrange Vault

The problem with the ref tag isn't the format of it (which is correct). The problem is it is calling upon a reference name that doesn't exist in the article. [ref name="DH" /] is a valid tag (using angle brackets for a real ref naturally) as long as there's a preceding reference named "DH" in the article. [ref name="DH"[ref/] (that's what you did) is not a valid tag at all. You could also do [ref name="DH"][/ref] but [ref name="DH" /] is much cleaner. I'm thinking someone removed the reference where "DH" was named. I'll check through the history and see if I can find it so I can fix the reference. -Shorty1982 20:54, September 19, 2011 (UTC)

Re: Your question to Cavalier One

What browser are you using? Ever since the upgrade to Firefox a few days ago pages have been reloading completely on me instead of pulling from the cache when I go back to them using the "Back" and "Forward" buttons. At least that's what I think is going on. It's a bit annoying but I tend to use new tabs when browsing this site so I can pop back to Recent Changes quickly anyway. Shorty1982 19:21, October 5, 2011 (UTC)

I use middle-click (or right-click/Open Link in New Tab) to open the pages in a new tab. This way I can easily switch between the open pages to check things and not have to go back a bunch of pages to get to Recent Changes. For instance, right now I have five HP Wiki tabs open in two windows. In my "main" window (where I also have my email and Google open) I have this edit page and my own talk page open so I can check back to what you said. In another window I have the "What links here" pages of three redirect pages I am working on changing the articles that link there to link to the redirected article directly (only doing that when there's not a lot else going on on the wiki so I don't bury other people's edits). I find using multiple tabs allows me to keep track of what's going on better. Shorty1982 19:48, October 5, 2011 (UTC)
No, it doesn't. The last couple upgrades have changed things they shouldn't have, such as what's going on with us. Ever since the last upgrade sites in my history come up in a different order in my address bar. I also don't like how "http" and the trailing slash are no longer shown in the address bar (though that may only be annoying to me). According to the Release Notes the latter is hidden by default now but I can't find any setting to unhide it. I can't find anything on the issue we share. Shorty1982 20:14, October 5, 2011 (UTC)
Found a solution to the trimming of the URL, in case you're interested. Still looking for one for the main issue. Shorty1982 20:19, October 5, 2011 (UTC)
The URL trimming fix is easy, just be careful what you change in about:config, change only what you know you can safely. There are settings in there that if you mess them up Firefox will be completely messed up. about:config is where all of your settings are stored and if you don't know what the values stand for you'll have issues if you try changing them. I tried one thing I found while poking around in an attempt to fix the cache issue but had no luck. I believe there is a forum like that but I'm not 100% on where it is. I'm good with computers and especially the Internet but I'm no expert. Google is a good friend when I need assistance. Shorty1982 20:33, October 5, 2011 (UTC)

RE

Ok, I'll explain, its okay. So, lets for example have a Gryffindor infobox.

sample 1
Biographical information
Blood status

Muggle-Born

Physical information
Species

Human

Gender

Female

Family information
Magical characteristics
Affiliation

Sample 1 is when its not hidden. See those titles? Family information, etc. It has titles with nothing in it, you can hide it by doing this:

sample 2
Biographical information
Blood status

Muggle-Born

Physical information
Species

Human

Gender

Female

See, sample 2 has them hidden, and you can't see them, thats what I did in your infobox, I just hid, "Family Information". To do this, when it says hidef, hideb, hidep, hidem, and hidea, next to the = put hide. So that what I did, sorry if it was too long, my bad. xD  Speedysnitch   Talk  contribs  23:25, November 5, 2011 (UTC)

Hey Harry granger! Thank you so much, I don't know why, but the admins never noticed I had 1000 edits till, well you did it. :P Thank you, I had it for a week already and they still didn't noticed, I've been waiting on this for days... oh well that sucks, thankfully Nick O' Demus finally did it for you. I haven't seen him since September, or August when he was on. I don't think the other admins really care about looking at people userpages... Are you talking about the "floaty thingy" on the top-right of my userpage? its true, but when you leave your userpage, its gone. it doesn't follow you everywhere, and every page. You want it? You don't need to, if you don't want to, its a suggestion. Its "A" okay if you say no.  Speedysnitch   Talk  contribs

okay then, colours? are you talking about  Speedysnitch   Talk  contribs  or  Speedysnitch   Talk  sig, 1, or 2? Sorry, I'm multi-tasking, busy a lot, my mum's bday, etc.  Speedysnitch   Talk  contribs  22:59, November 7, 2011 (UTC)

okay, sorry I didn't reply... my bad. Okie dokie, lets just do Arial for now, any more ideas?  Speedysnitch   Talk  contribs  22:12, November 9, 2011 (UTC)

Okay, sorry, you can't use the Preferences one because it doesn't work, so you'll have to use a template... Template:Harry granger/sig << This? Then, once you are done, you {{Harry granger/sig}} then you have to put a space then do "5" tildes (~)  Speedysnitch   Talk  contribs  22:23, November 9, 2011 (UTC)

how about... I can make it for you, then I'll write the direction on there, and do a code so it won't go with your signature. How about that?  Speedysnitch   Talk  contribs  22:29, November 9, 2011 (UTC)

Yup, I can make the template page if you want.  Speedysnitch   Talk  contribs  22:35, November 9, 2011 (UTC)

okay!  Speedysnitch   Talk  contribs  22:40, November 9, 2011 (UTC)

okay, i did it, now you do {{Harry granger/sig}} (then 5 ~) Try it!  Speedysnitch   Talk  contribs  22:48, November 9, 2011 (UTC)

Bellatrix's escape

Hi Harry Granger, but if you watch the film bellatrix escapes by using the floo network instead of disapparating with Voldemort after the duel with dumbledore. I know its not the same as the book but everyone will associate it with the movie. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Nymphdora (talkcontribs).

Hi. Rollback should generally only be used when the edit is vandalism. If the user might be trying to help, but has just done so badly, then it's better to just fix the edit for them, and if needed leave them an encouraging note on why you made that edit so they can learn. I hope that helps, and let me know if you want to know anything else. Cheers, grunny@talk:~$ 10:19, December 1, 2011 (UTC)

Human Category

Unless we get a clarification from an admin saying that it's okay to do otherwise, I would suggest that it would be better if you not add the "Human" category to articles such as Lucius Malfoy and Neil Randall. I was wondering if there was a reason why those wouldn't have already been listed there. So I checked, and the description on the category's page specifically states that individuals should not be listed at the root level for that category if they can be categorised as Wizard, Muggle, or Squib. ProfessorTofty 19:30, January 1, 2012 (UTC)

Infobox? I'm not sure what the infobox has do with anything. As far as I know, listing "Human" under species for that is fine, since that is the species. I was just saying, don't add "Human" as a category, because of what it says in the category description about not adding it unless the individual can't clearly be fit into the classification of Wizard, squib, or muggle. ProfessorTofty 19:38, January 1, 2012 (UTC)

Re: Order of Merlin

Not renaming "Helena Bonham Carter" to "Helena Carter"

Hi Harry! You moved the article at http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Christian_Simpson from the original at http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Christian_J_Simpson stating "Middle names or initials are not used in titles".

However the "J" is part of this actor's stage name "Christian J Simpson". E.g. you will note that you have not renamed other actors or moved their pages like "Helena Bonham Carter" to become "Helen Carter" at http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Helena_Bonham_Carter, or numerous other examples like "Roger C. Bailey" http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Roger_C._Bailey. As you wouldn't rename Ms Bonham Cater, can you please therefore move Mr Simpson's page back to http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Christian_J_Simpson to keep the wiki consistent and allow searches for the actor's full stage name to be fruitious. Thanks! NosFiesta 00:28, January 14, 2012 (UTC)

RE:Title names

Actually, "Helena Bonham Carter" is just her proper name and surname ("Bonham Carter" is a double barrelled surname; her father was Raymond Bonham Carter). But I digress. Titles of actor-related articles use usually their stage/credited name, so I wouldn't oppose to have "Christian J. Simpson", yes, like Roger C. Bailey. --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 00:42, January 14, 2012 (UTC)

Hello there. I have a question to ask you. In Harry Potter: Chamber of Secrets (Film), Harry was asking the snake to head towards on of the Gryffindors. Who was that. 72.199.41.207 16:29, March 21, 2012 (UTC)

RE

Hey. I thought that it should been black, though, I'm guessing you liked the old one? I can change it back if you like.  Speedysnitch   Talk  contribs  21:17, March 24, 2012 (UTC)

I fixed it. Sorry about changing it earlier.  Speedysnitch   Talk  contribs  22:47, March 24, 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I do use the template. I've just been in the habit of substituting it. Thanks for the message, though. --Cubs Fan (Talk to me) 12:34, March 28, 2012 (UTC)

You're welcome

I see that someone noticed that I had done some extensive justice (if you can call it that). --MrSmartyMax 18:25, April 11, 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the Birthday greetings :-) Cheers

RE: Problem with talk page link from email

I don't use e-mail notifications, so I'm not really familiar with it, but I'm not sure why it would do that. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the comma in my username threw off the link somehow. Thanks for the heads up. - Nick O'Demus 19:43, April 24, 2012 (UTC)

Categorising templates

Hi Harry granger. Just a note. Infobox preloads and the featured article editintro shouldn't be categorised as the raw text of the page is placed onto a page. Cheers, grunny@talk:~$ 04:16, April 30, 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, it's only for the /preload templates and the featured editintro. They shouldn't be categorised at all as the raw text of the template is used when they are called. This means that the template category will get copied into the page when a user uses the preload dropdown on the side. Even putting in <noinclude>s around them won't work as it will still copy them onto the page with <noinclude>s. So, they're a rare example of a template that shouldn't be categorised at all. It's annoying, but it's the only way the wiki software allows this to work without getting too complex. :) Cheers, grunny@talk:~$ 11:29, April 30, 2012 (UTC)

Photos

Adding photos isn't too big a deal. In general, it's just a matter of adding the right tag. So, for example, if you're uploading a screenshot from one of the films or a game or something, you want to choose the one that says "Screenshot of a copyrighted, website, video game, or program." Or, just find whatever other description matches. Then just add the details to the description about where the image comes from and add it to the appropriate categories (i.e. does it show a particular character or characters? An event? And what book or film, etc., is it from?) ProfessorTofty 06:24, May 9, 2012 (UTC)

Well, as always, the copyright depends on what type of image of it is. As a general rule, though, images that you just happened to find somewhere on the Internet probably shouldn't be used here, because they probably aren't the type of image that comes from some official source, i.e. from the films, one of the books, etc. If by some chance it is, though, and it isn't watermarked, then just use one of the normal tags. If we're assering its use as "fair use" here, then presumably whoever else posted it is using it under fair use as well. Hopefully that sorts it out a bit, though if you want to give me any specific examples, I'd be glad to take a look at them and see what would be suitable, and perhaps that would give a better idea. RE:Signature

Hello! It doesn't appear to be anything wrong with your signature but, in any case, I was not I who changed it: as you can see for youself in the page history, it was 68.102.16.102. --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 01:03, June 3, 2012 (UTC)
