Lavender

Sorry. I didn´t want to undo the vandalism. We worked on the article at the same time. The article is correct again, finally.--Rodolphus 12:23, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Shut it!

Hey Shut Up! I can spam and vandalize if i want! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.118.120.222 (talkcontribs).

Lavender Brown vandalism

That person's been at this for weeks now. Check the history of the Seamus Finnigan page and see. They always go after Seamus, and characters closely related to him such as Lavender and Dean. The problem is they use a slightly modified IP address each time, so blocking won't make much difference. - Nick O'Demus 16:50, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Ronald Weasley vandalism

Just a head's up, this isn't the first time this guy's done this. Currently, they're 142.68.105.50 (previously 142.68.98.216, Iamkes, 142.68.98.157, and142.68.98.1).

They follow the same pattern every time: they go through a character's article one section at time, "dumbing down" the wording, cutting down characters' names, removing pictures, subsituting certain phrases with anagrams, and sometimes misdirecting the pipe links.

You can see on Iamkes' talk page that Seth Cooper previously tried to point out the editing guidelines and warned them against ignoring the policies. He also recently blocked 142.68.98.216 when they started doing it again (check the History of the Harry Potter article to see what they were up to yesterday, they were at it for over 6 straight hours). - Nick O'Demus 07:28, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

The problem is, as soon as they get done with one article, they move on to another. Between the various I.P. addresses listed, they've done Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Bellatrix Lestrange, Lucius Malfoy, Remus Lupin, Rubeus Hagrid, Sirius Black, Minerva McGonagall, and Antonin Dolohov. It's not like we can give every character article on the wiki semi-protected status just on account of this guy. - Nick O'Demus 07:40, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Unfortunately, yes. I'd hoped they'd quit last month, but now they're back and they've learned how to change their I.P. address. I just thought I'd let you know what to watch for in case you see this sort of editing happening on any other articles. - Nick O'Demus 08:01, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

House Points Game, 2nd term

Hello! Just to let you know, we're starting a new round of the Harry Potter Wiki House Points Game on September 15th, and we need some new members! By helping to improve the Wiki, you can earn points toward winning the House Cup. Just add your name under your favorite House on this page to join. We hope to see you soon! - Nick O'Demus 10:05, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Minute of silence

I had also considered whether it would be possible to lock down the site for a minute. However, I think the spirit of the minute of silence is to let Jayden know that he is in our thoughts, and I think that can only truly be achieved if people consciously set aside some time out of their day. Also, the Protect site function page states that it is intended as a "last resort method" for "circumvent[ing] persistent spam or vandal attacks," so I'm not sure the Wikia staff would activate it on this site for the purpose of observing a minute of silence. Thanks for the tip though. :) Starstuff (Owl me!) 14:37, September 7, 2009 (UTC)

Forgot to mention this earlier, but Seth Cooper put up a very nice message about the Moment of Silence in the Wiki's Site Notice. Just thought I'd let you know. - Nick O'Demus 07:07, September 13, 2009 (UTC)

Oh! I never noticed that! Thanks! --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 01:17, September 16, 2009 (UTC)

Success!

Grunny, I got the preload templates to work. Although you forgot to mention MediaWiki:Edittools; I had to update the current one to get it all to work. Good job I checked what you did over at the Firefly Wiki! - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 11:48, September 18, 2009 (UTC)

Hey Grunny; finally got the review panel nominations off the ground here. You know I want you aboard this ride, so this is formal request for you to accept a nomination, championed by myself. What do you say? - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 09:34, September 29, 2009 (UTC)

Accidental Edit

Sorry Grunny, I didn't mean to edit Seth Cooper's user page. I completely forgot to use the talk page instead. Is there anyway that you could put that exact paragraph onto Seth's talkpage, please?--Yin&Yang 04:07, October 26, 2009 (UTC)

Some Help

Hi, Ive been told you know quite alot about Templates and coding and such. I require some help of yours. I was wondering about If-Then-Else statements in wikicode. Ive saw that in certain infobox templates there are things like {{#If:#000000|000000|111111}} I am guessing for colors. I cannt seem to find any documentation about If statements in wiki. I was wondering if it possible to use if-then statements to stop redlinks. let me explain. when a page has the {{transribed image}} template in use, it adds a link to the page's talkpage, but sometimes there is no talk page, so it leaves a redlink. I was wondering, if in the template code, you could use an If-then statement to have it give a link to the talk page, IF there is a talk page, but if there is no talk page, it was just say 'talk page'. I would really appreicate your help. Thank you. Also, Merry Christmas. -- Ratneer Owl Me! 04:57, December 25, 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the information. It really helps. -- Ratneer Owl Me! 05:16, December 25, 2009 (UTC)

Also

Also, just being curious, but what did you do when you changed your /monaco.js. Dont mean to be nosy. -- Ratneer Owl Me! 05:07, December 25, 2009 (UTC)

Dont mean to bother you again

Sorry to bother you again, But I wanted to ask you about something. I have been trying to learn more about templates and parser functions. Right now, I am trying to learn how the #switch function works. As you can see Here, I am trying to make the code:

{{X1
|name=(1-5)
}}

To display the (result1-5) in a sentence like 'What is (Result1-5) Last name?'

I cannot seem to find out what I did wrong. Could you please help me figure it out. I am guessing it is a simple mistake you can point out to me. Thank you so much. -- Ratneer Owl Me! 07:02, December 25, 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, I Knew i was overcomplicating it. -- Ratneer Owl Me! 07:21, December 25, 2009 (UTC)

Yet Another Question

I was wondering if you knew a way to view the Special:Editcount as raw. You see, Im trying to make a edit goal template/userbox, and Im trying to make the code work, but it wont if the Editcount has a ',' in the number. Here:
Template Page:

{| cellspacing="0" style="width: 238px; border:1px solid DarkBlue; background:Green;"
| style="width: 80px; height: 40px; background:DarkBlue; text-align: center; font-size:14pt; color:White;" | '''Edit count Goal'''
| style="font-size:8pt; padding: 4pt; line-height: 1.25em; color:Gold;" | {{#expr: {{{1|goal|}}} - {{Special:Editcount/{{#if:
{{{2|name|}}}|{{{name|}}}|{{{PAGENAME}}}}}}}
|}

The part I am having trouble with is:

{{#expr: {{{1|goal|}}} - {{Special:Editcount/{{#if:{{{2|name|}}}|{{{name|}}}|{{{PAGENAME}}}}}}}

Then you would put:

{{TEMPLATE NAME
|name=NAME OF USER (Not neccesary If it is on Your userpage)
|goal=EDITCOUNT GOAL
}}

Because the Editcount page returns the count as a number with a , like 1,234 the #expr wont accept it. I have no clue how to make it raw without the ,. I hope you do, because Ive been trying to find this out for Hours. I dont know if you can help, but I would be ever so greatful if you did. -- Ratneer Owl Me! 23:55, December 25, 2009 (UTC)

Argentina

That article states that Argentina is part of the Spanish Republic and then talks about Andorra. I think it needs to be wholy redone. --Hcoknhoj 22:50, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Then talk to GrouchMan, he's the one who created it. I don't have access to the source, I just removed the speculative wording and added the appearance. Cheers, Grunny (Talk) 22:52, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
Will do, thanks. I just saw you did the last edit. --Hcoknhoj 22:54, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
No problem :). Seems GrouchMan copy-pasted from the Andorra article and didn't correct it. Cheers, Grunny (Talk) 22:55, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
I've cleaned it up anyway, and corrected the information about the country. See what you think. Cheers, Grunny (Talk) 22:59, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
That works, I doubt we know much more about the country as it relates to HP anyway. Thanks again. --Hcoknhoj 23:00, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Miki1234

Hi, Grunny. Sorry to bother you, but, I have a request. Would you please rid the Harry Potter Wiki of this buffoon, once, and for all? Yesterday I gave him his tenth warning regarding his determination to lower the quality of this site by replacing info box images with ones unrelated to the subject. Two of his warnings came from Seth Cooper, and were supposed to be his last. Alas, his behaviour has continued unpunished, and, I've reached the end of my patience. Thanks for listening. Jayce DarkmarkAvada KedavraCrucioImperio 11:24, March 20, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry for bothering you again, Grunny, but it looks like the Tom Riddle Sr. has a +4 advantage in it's nomination. Can you suggest some words for improvement and/or support for the nomination? Thanks.--L.V.K.T.V.J.Hogwarts(Send an owl!) 18:18, March 20, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry it took me a while to see your review, but I just saw it. I put my fixes on the article, and my response to your review, but I have one problem, as you will see here. Thanks.--L.V.K.T.V.J.Hogwarts(Send an owl!) 01:20, April 14, 2010 (UTC)
Left a response on the FAN page. Good work with those objections, I'll continue reviewing it when I get home later today. Grunny (talk) 01:26, April 14, 2010 (UTC)

Susan Bones Edit War

There is an edit war going on between User:ArthurCh8 and an unregistered user over the infobox picture. Could you protect the article and stop this? --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 11:36, March 25, 2010 (UTC)

Yes check Done. Protected for a week, and users told to take it to the talk page, let me know if they continue to edit war after that time and I'll take further measures. Cheers, Grunny (talk) 13:08, March 25, 2010 (UTC)

Deathly Hallows Films

What do you think of protecting the article for the DH films? It gets a lot of back and forth editing and deleting of cast members with a significant portion of it done by unregistered contributors. --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 11:21, March 27, 2010 (UTC)

I don't think it's necessarily needed at the moment, though closer to the release it might be. Right now we don't want to discourage new editors from editing pages that they are likely to be searching for the most. If it gets bad vandalism though, then of course we'll need to protect it. Cheers, Grunny (talk) 06:44, March 28, 2010 (UTC)

Okay, I've reinforced your note and I'll keep my eye on their edits to hopefully guide them in the right direction. Cheers, Grunny (talk) 20:02, April 11, 2010 (UTC)

Back-up

Could you back me up in telling User:Wizard44 that over-specification reduces the quality of the wiki. For example, a paragraph will have a character's full name, say Harry Potter. So every time "Harry" is used throughout the rest of the paragraph, it is understood who is being discussed. Wizard44 likes to go through and add full names to all of the uses. It makes for disjointed reading. I have already asked him to stop, but he has not. You can find this being done is you look athe histories of Charlie Weasley and Pomona Sprout. Thank you, --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 23:28, May 27, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome, but that was an edit of my old account that got wrongfully banned after an issue with a troll. I don't plan to stick around. John Canavi 04:22, June 8, 2010 (UTC)

Sure, but I'm probably going to be busy catching up on other things for a while at first. I'll also be gone from the 16th-21st of this month, visiting family. I might be able to be more active as an Unspeakable around the beginning of July. - Nick O'Demus 09:18, June 9, 2010 (UTC)

Unspeakable Review

I was wondering if you could review some of the greatly improved FA nominations (Peter Pettigrew, Second Wizarding War, and Elder Wand specifically), and is there a process for getting rid of some of the bad nominations like Argus Filch? Thanks, --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 17:40, June 19, 2010 (UTC)

I'll try to review them soon. I've started a vote to remove on Argus Filch and Aurora Sinistra, they just need another Unspeakable to vote to remove on both and they can be removed. Cheers, Grunny (talk) 05:49, June 20, 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, just point out to Seth that those need to be rid of and he'll join you in voting them off. --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 06:01, June 20, 2010 (UTC)

New blog policy in effect

As per the vote on the proposed blog policy, I am pleased to say that the new policy is now in effect. Users have one week to retrieve any work they want from the blogs. After that time, feel free to begin deleting blog posts that do not adhere to the new rules. I'll be conducting a massive sweep of the pages soon myself. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 11:26, June 30, 2010 (UTC)

Question

Isn't there a policy, which says you can be disciplined for not editing in the mainspace, b/c there is a user User:KallieLynn21 who has 187 edits and only 2 in the mainspace of the wiki. --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 23:24, July 1, 2010 (UTC)

Yes, it is at Harry Potter Wiki:Editing Policy#Excessive user page / forum edits. I have asked the user to contribute to our articles more, continuing to edit mainly their user page will mean the user page will be locked from editing. Cheers, Grunny (talk) 23:33, July 1, 2010 (UTC)

Bot?

After conversation with CavOne, we are moving dates to appropriate British style (31 July instead of July 31), after all the pages are moved, is there a way to create a bot to go through the articles changing links, so they go to the right pages. --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 03:53, August 6, 2010 (UTC)

Yes, a bot can do that. I'll start writing the script later, let me know when you're all done moving the pages and stuff and I'll get to work on it. Cheers, Grunny (talk) 04:24, August 6, 2010 (UTC)
Well, we have fixed the dates on every single article except a few I have listed for deletion so articles can be moved, so you can get started on that bot. Thanks.--L.V.K.T.V.J.Hogwarts(Send an owl!) 22:31, August 8, 2010 (UTC)
This is in progress. Let me know if you see the bot make any errors. Cheers, Grunny (talk) 03:48, August 9, 2010 (UTC)

If the use of the date is not a link the bot does not change it. I have found a few instances of this see:Attack at the Hogwarts Lake, down the page. --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 05:15, August 9, 2010 (UTC)

You asked for it to change the links :P. "go through the articles changing links." But I can make it change everything if that's what you all want. Grunny (talk) 05:16, August 9, 2010 (UTC)

That I did. Every time a date appears it should be styled 31 October, so please. --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 05:26, August 9, 2010 (UTC)

Already in progress :). Grunny (talk) 05:43, August 9, 2010 (UTC)

Out of curiosity, the bot is not programmed to work on user pages, or specifically project pages. --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 05:07, August 13, 2010 (UTC)

It has so far worked on every article within an In-universe category. User pages shouldn't be in in-universe categories, but if they are, the bot may hit them. I can restrict it, but user pages shouldn't be in those categories in the first place. Grunny (talk) 05:13, August 13, 2010 (UTC)
I was just wondering, b/c I'm rewriting many of the years in Ron's bio on my project page and that hadn't been change. Thanks for the info. --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 05:18, August 13, 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, if it was in a category it would have been hit :). I'll go through uncategorised pages last, but not sure if I'll include user pages since some people might like to have their user pages in the American format :). Grunny (talk) 05:58, August 13, 2010 (UTC)

Help

Hey, this user User:Voldemortiselegant keeps creating a page for Lord Voldemort's robes, that Seth keeps deleting because he feels it is an unnecessary article. I pointed out on Seth's talk page that the user keeps going in and recreating the page after he deletes it, now the user is going in and editing my comments to Seth, one of which was kind of rude, and I think he changed it the way he did thinking I would get the blame for saying it. He only seems to edit pages about LV, which is fine, but he goes over the top with adjectives, and when any of the admin's (jkoch and seth), change something, he changes it back again. --BachLynn23 22:34, September 11, 2010 (UTC)

Question

I noticed this edit, but I'm not sure what it affects. It would seem to correspond to the menu selections in the top left of the page, but those still reflect the previous version. - Nick O'Demus 12:55, October 4, 2010 (UTC)

It's the menus for the new skin they're rolling out. You can see them at the top. We'll have to decide how we want to structure those menus, since we're restricted to just four of them at the moment. Grunny (talk) 13:30, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
Four? Ouch. Although consolidating Forums, Chat, and Blogs into "Community" does help. Prehaps keep "Harry Potter series" and "Quick Links" as-is, and make "Featured Content" a sub-section of "Harry Potter Wiki"? - Nick O'Demus 13:37, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, it's kinda restrictive, and I believe we also can't nest, as in, the way we have quick links in monaco where it goes Quick Links > Students > Harry Potter etc. It can only be the result of a single dropdown. Maybe combine Harry Potter series into one; put a link to the admin page, FAs, and policies under a Harry Potter Wiki one; and maybe a Character or content one to go with the community one with forums and so forth? I'm heading off for the night, so feel free to play with it and see what you come up with, we have a month or so until the skin is default to play with things. You can preview the skin by putting ?useskin=wikia on the end of the URL. Grunny (talk) 13:47, October 4, 2010 (UTC)

Another thing I noticed: the Local list users page is out-of-date. Usually I use this to see who's up for the Order of Merlin awards and such, but the most recent Last logged in is shown as Sep. 1st, and the most recent Last edited is shown as Aug. 12th. Case in point, BachLynn23 currently has over 4,200 edits. ListUsers shows her at only 625. How is this kept track of? It is a function on this wiki specifically, or Wikia in general? - Nick O'Demus 20:43, October 7, 2010 (UTC)

That's a known bug that staff will fix at some point. For now the best way to see current number of edits might be to use Special:WikiStats and click the "Editor activity breakdown" tab. That produces current results for mainspace edits, and puts their total non-mainspace edits in the other column, so adding both will give their current edit count. Though the page does take a little while to load as it pulls data live, and once it does you can set the number of results to 100, which should cover most people coming up to 1000 edits. Hope that helps. Cheers, Grunny (talk) 01:00, October 8, 2010 (UTC)
A couple of things I thought I should mention. Local list users is up to date now, but some users seem to be missing. So far I've noticed it doesn't list you, Seth Cooper, or BachLynn23. Also, Station7 and BachLynn23 noticed that with the new skin, the Golden Snitch icon on FA pages overlaps the infobox picture (unless there's a header template, like {{Youmay}} or {{Semiprotected}}). - Nick O'Demus 14:43, October 14, 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, they've reworked the ListUsers extension and it's currently a bit buggy, hopefully they'll fix that up soon. I'll need to tweak the FA icon's positioning in the new skin, I'll try to fix that soon :). Grunny (talk) 23:08, October 14, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry to bug you again, but I had a few more questions/things I've noticed with the new skin:

  1. I take it the widgets are going away when Monaco does?
  2. Is there any way to collapse or at least reduce the right column? It seems to really be cramping up the article text.
  3. I can't find any way to access the page history for my userpage or talk page in the new skin, short of going to Monaco or Monobook and copying the URL.

Nick O'Demus 22:46, October 31, 2010 (UTC)

It's no problem :). 1) Yes, widgets are going with Monaco. 2) No, Wikia has changed there Terms of Use to stop people from altering the layout of the skin. You can read more about that at here and here. 3) As far as I can see, there is no easy link to page history in the new skin, apart from simply adding ?action=history to the URL. You can leave feedback on the new skin to staff via Special:Contact or on the central blog. I'm sure anything that makes it harder for you to access tools would be of interest to them. Also, if you want to stick to using the new skin, I can add missing tools for you personally (like links to history on your user page and anything else you want) via your personal JS, as that won't be against Wikia's ToU. Hope that helps. Cheers, Grunny (talk) 23:41, October 31, 2010 (UTC)

Questions

Hi! I'm new to this wiki, and i have a couple of questions:

1) Is this wiki like all the others, or do things run differently

2) Are there any blogs on here?

and

2) Do users here think the new wiki look should stay or do they prefer the older look? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Potterfan1997 (talkcontribs).

The Wiki has it's own policies and standards, some of which may be similar to other Wikis, some not. Blogs are on here but we have a strict policy on the use of them. I imagine different users have different opinions on the new skin so that's up to the individual. Cheers, Grunny (talk) 08:46, October 23, 2010 (UTC)

Image help

User:Abrawak uploaded a much lower quality image of File:Ron Weasley in the Muggle street of London.JPG (twice, in fact). I attempted to revert the 11 KB version back to the 192 KB one, but for some reason it just uploaded the 11 KB version again. I tried deleting all the old revisions except the 192 KB, but it still only reverts to the 11 KB every time I try. I checked the original source links, but the video isn't available anymore. While I could use a screenshot from a YouTube trailer, it's not as high-quality as the original uploaded by User:You-Know-Who. Is there any other way to restore the original? - Nick O'Demus 23:16, October 23, 2010 (UTC)

That's a bug, the thumb is showing the current one rather than the one from that date. I'll report it to staff and see if we can get that version back. Cheers, Grunny (talk) 02:55, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Harry Potter Premiere Events

Hi Grunny, This is Kacie from Wikia Entertainment. I wanted to let you know that Wikia is celebrating the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:Part 1 by giving away a trip for 4 to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, hotel and airfare included! The giveaway will launch on Harry Potter Wiki tomorrow-- we hope it will excite both old and new users and motivate everyone to participate on the wiki! Our friends over at Mugglenet.com will be helping us promote the wiki and the giveaway to the larger community of Harry Potter fans. :)

The Wizarding World giveaway runs from November 8-30. To enter the giveaway, Harry Potter fans mustcreate an account and leave a comment on the giveaway page answering the question: "If you could spend one day in Hogwarts, what would you do?" Each comment counts as an entry, and one lucky muggle will be randomly selected from all eligible entries on December 1st. Since you're a Harry Potter expert, we need your help to come up with a special, tricky Harry Potter trivia question on the giveaway page- it will be another way for extra dedicated HP fans to enter the giveaway. Can you help us come up with a tough trivia question (and the answer) by tomorrow?

We will also be enabling category galleries (which beautify category pages) and article comments (which allow users to comment about an article) for the giveaway and premiere. these tools have proven to facilitate conversation, engagement and collaboration on many of our wikis, including Twilight Saga Wiki and Glee Wiki. We are positive that they will help the giveaway run more smoothly, allow users to review and discuss the movie much more easily, and foster a heightened sense of community here. If you have problems with this, please let me know.

In collaboration with local San Francisco radio station 92.7 KREV, Wikia is also giving away a limited number of tickets to the midnight showing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 in Redwood City on November 18. We hope to see Bay Area Harry Potter fanatics at the Redwood City AMC theater at 11:00pm on November 18 for a local Harry Potter meetup complete with games, raffles, prizes, costumes and picture-taking! If you or any Harry Potter Wikians you know are local to the San Francisco Bay Area, please come join us as our guests of honor! Thanks so much for all of your hard work on Harry Potter Wiki. Cheers-- Kacie@Wikia (talk) 23:15, November 7, 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for the quick response! I left messages for Seth and Nick as well, so you can all put your heads together! I'm sorry you're all the way in Australia and can't join us--we'll post pictures so it'll feel like you were right there with us! :)---- Kacie@Wikia (talk) 00:22, November 8, 2010 (UTC)

Comments

So do all of the comments not associated with the contest need to be deleted, or did Cav want to archive those first? If they need to be deleted, let me know and I'll take care of it. - Nick O'Demus 06:09, November 9, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, we're deleting all comments not associated with the contest, though it doesn't matter if we don't get them all. We're only archiving the contest. Now that I've put the talk page links back and removed the comments sections with JS on all other pages, it should only be a few who actually post comments (hopefully :P). Cheers, Grunny (talk) 06:26, November 9, 2010 (UTC)
Geez, I step away for just a bit, and you've already got them all. : / - Nick O'Demus 06:51, November 9, 2010 (UTC)
Haha gotta be quick ;-). Grunny (talk) 06:52, November 9, 2010 (UTC)
One more question: should the Wizarding World Giveaway page they created be left where it is (maybe with the Category:Fandom added), or do you think it should be moved to something like Harry Potter Wiki:Wizarding World Giveaway, out of the Main space? - Nick O'Demus 07:35, November 9, 2010 (UTC)
They need the URL as clean as possible, so it's staying in the mainspace until the end of the giveaway, as Kacie cleared up here. So we could categorize it as fandom. Cheers, Grunny (talk) 07:38, November 9, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, couple more questions. Should we delete comments from unregistered IP's, since the contest specifies the users must create an account first, or just leave it as is? Also, I was wondering if are there any measures in place on our end to prevent or at least check for sock-puppet activity (we've had 170 new user registrations in just the last hour). - Nick O'Demus 21:29, November 9, 2010 (UTC)

For the unregistered IPs, I'd leave any comments on the giveaway except if it's vandalism or spam. Kacie and other staff looking after the giveaway will sort through everything else. There isn't a lot we can do locally about sockpuppetry as a result of the giveaway unfortunately, since we don't have local CUs. We can expect a lot of new account creations since this giveaway is being advertised at places like Mugglenet.com :). So a lot of people will be led here and create accounts, which is good for the wiki. If you see anything you suspect as sockpuppetry, let me know, and I'll get it looked into :). Cheers, Grunny (talk) 23:38, November 9, 2010 (UTC)
I know you said Wikia would sort through the comments themselves, but there are some that I felt I should ask about: Wanabwizard has left 12 comments on the Wizarding World Giveaway as of this message, Brandeno45 has left 69, CherryPearl3 has 103, Grant741 has left 30, Grant147 (obvious sock-puppet) has left 10, and Hpgrantrox (also a sock-puppet) has left 14. Should the extras be deleted, or should we simply notify Kacieh? - Nick O'Demus 04:34, November 11, 2010 (UTC)
Though the rules state one per username, I'd leave it to staff to sort out multiple posts. You could ask Kacie or Xean if they want any help sorting out people doing multiple posts though. The sockpuppets are a potential issue if they decided to edit outside the giveaway, but for now, I'd keep an eye on it and just let Kacie or Xean know :). Cheers, Grunny (talk) 08:43, November 11, 2010 (UTC)

Monobook

Hey, I've just started using monobook since I don't really like the new wikia look, but the only thing I can't figure out is creating new pages with monobook, in the other looks there was a link you could click on.....? --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 16:27, November 11, 2010 (UTC)

I've added it to the sidebar. You should see the link "Create an article" at the bottom of the "navigation" menu on the left. :) Cheers, Grunny (talk) 22:43, November 11, 2010 (UTC)

Increasing our online visibility

With the recent rise in new users and contributions that has been the direct result of the current Wizarding World Giveaway, I would like us to consider increasing our visibility within the HP fan community. To this end, I am tabling the following actions for consideration:

  1. The creation of some type of "affiliates program" where we can maintain links to other HP related sites and they can link back to us through mutual agreement.
  2. The setting up of an official HPW twitter feed that all administrators would be able to access and post through (or designate a member of the admin team to use).
  3. Setting up a Facebook "fan page".

The HP community on the Internet is massive, and I think we could benefit from a higher profile. As you well know, I am against turning the site into some type of social network/forum, and I don't plan for that to change. I think that by maintaining these resources off site will allow us to better channel those users who want to engage in such activities away from the wiki and into more appropriate places. For instance, the FB fan page can be used as a social forum and image host, which will allow us to direct users there instead of dealing with them on site. Thoughts? - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 13:03, November 18, 2010 (UTC)

Deathly Hallows Review and Picture Pages

Kacieh left this on my talk page, but I think this might be more suited for you or Cav, so I'm forwarding it along. Personally, I'm thinking maybe a new forum section, separate from the Wizengamot or Help Desk. - Nick O'Demus 00:09, November 19, 2010 (UTC)

I'm going to add a Deathly Hallows: Part 1 review page and a picture gallery page so people can post reviews and pictures tonight after the premiere for an extra giveaway entry. Where would you like those two pages to live on the wiki?-- Kacie@Wikia (talk) 23:45, November 18, 2010 (UTC)
I created a new image category for the pics that are going to be used for this. I'm just worried that Cav's going to have conniptions when he sees all the new image uploads. : P - Nick O'Demus 00:53, November 19, 2010 (UTC)
Haha yeah, I can see Cav having a heart attack at all the untemplated, unsourced, unlicensed images we're going to be bombarded with :P. Grunny (talk) 01:00, November 19, 2010 (UTC)
Trust me, I'm crying already. I need a vacation. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 09:37, November 19, 2010 (UTC)

Premiere event images licensing

Grunny; Kacie thinks that the images should be licensed as public domain. Wikia staff took the images and therefore own them. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 11:29, November 19, 2010 (UTC)

Licensing on all images has been updated. :) Cheers, Grunny (talk) 11:44, November 19, 2010 (UTC)
