A suggestion and a possible bot job

Hey, DJ - hope things are going well with you. I've had a thought - since we're supposed to be an in-universe encyclopedia, shouldn't Category:Characters be changed to Category:Humans? We already have Category:Non-human characters (which would have to be retitled as simply Category:Non-Humans) and associated sub-cats. OR, leave Category:Characters, and create Category:Humans as a sub-cat. Either way, we would need your to change all links to Category:Characters to Category:Humans. Suggestions? - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 07:55, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Okay, having looked into this, it is clear that this will require a major overhaul of the entire category! Several renames, a lot of cat changing in articles. Here is my rough layout of what I think the category should be structured like:
  • Category:Individuals (renamed from Category:Characters)
    • Category:Individuals by ability (renamed from Category:Characters by ability - sub cats remain the same)
    • Category:Individuals by achievement (renamed from Category:Characters by achievement - sub cats remain the same)
    • Category:Individuals by injury (renamed from Category:Characters by injury - sub cats remain the same)
    • Category:Families (no changes)
    • Category:Individuals by job (renamed from Category:Jobs - sub cats already in cat remain the same, but are joined by Category:Hogwarts employees, Category:Ministry of Magic employees, Category:Quidditch players and Category:Quidditch referees, all of which are currently in Category:Characters) - note: I didn't get rid of Category:Jobs because it suddenly occured to me that we need two distinct categories, one for individuals, and one for the jobs themselves. Recatted to be in Category:Harry Potter universe.
    • Category:Individuals by race/species (unsure which one sounds better - new category)
      • Category:Humans (new category)
        • Category:Wizards (new category)
        • Category:Muggles (moved from Category:Characters)
      • Category:Non-Humans (renamed from Category:Non-human characters - sub cats remain the same, joined by Category:Werewolves and Category:Ghosts, both currently in Category:Characters)
    • Category:Individuals by gender (new category - this is the big one since it means every article has to have a new cat added regarding gender!)
      • Category:Males
      • Category:Females
    • Category:Individuals by nationality (renamed from Category:Foreign characters - new sub cats created for various foreign characters in the series. We already have Category:French characters, which would be renamed to Category:French (or something similar). Again, this is a big one as it means recat a lot of articles)
    • Category:Individuals by House (renamed from Category:Students by House - as pointed out, some individuals listed in this category are no longer students - this could possibly mean relisting all students with Category:Students as well as their House)
    • Category:Students (no changes)

It's a lot to do, sure, but I don't mind taking the lead on it since you're busy with school. I'll introduce the changes gradually, and inform you when I need the bot to start making category changes in articles. What do you think? Any suggestions? - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 09:00, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

For the categories you stated, I think keeping them there would be ok unless we can find a sub-cat to put them in. Dark Wizards under Individuals by job wouldn't look quite right :) I was thinking of creating a separate category branch with all the changes/ new categories first, while keeping the old cat branch in use. Then, once we're ready, run the bot and shift all the articles over a cat at a time then delete the cat. What do you think? - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 13:01, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
I hope you don't mind me throwing in my two cents here. I think cleaning up the current categorization system is a great idea, and I really like the layout you've created, Cavalier One, but I have a couple of minor suggestions/concerns:
  • Category:Individuals by species is probably a preferable title to Category:Individuals by race, as the intent would would be to sort Dobby from Dumbledore, not Kingsley from Ron. Readers who aren't familiar with the fantasy definition of "race" would be confused, thinking the category is supposed to sort by ethnicity, so I think we should choose a title which makes the proper context clearer.
  • Category:Werewolves and Category:Ghosts should remain in Category:Humans. Werewolves are still human, they just transform once a month, and ghosts were once human (Nearly Headless Nick tells Harry in Chapter 38 of Order of the Phoenix that only witches and wizards can become ghosts). That's why I deliberately avoided moving either category into Category:Non-humans characters when I created it a couple of days ago.
BTW, I wouldn't mind helping you with categorizing by gender, DarkJedi, if it helps things get done faster. I'll start with the second half of the alphabet (N-Z) to avoid any edit conflicts. -Starstuff 20:37, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Regarding gender - I don't believe it's ever been mentioned that there is more than male and female. No character/ creature has been shown to reproduce asexually, except possibly Dementors and I wouldn't categorise them by gender. I'll start adding the empty categories to Category:Individuals per the guide, changing the ones I can do the easiest, thne we should coordinate for using the bot. I suggest striking each cat change on the list above as it's completed to make sure we get everything. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 22:06, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

I've struck through a few I've done - I didn't strike the new Categories Individuals, Males and Females since, although created, they are not complete. I'm thinking we should shift this to a temporary subpage to avoid clogging up your talk page. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 22:47, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
We'll keep it here on your talk page then - saves the trouble of deleting it later, and you can check in on the process. Makes requesting a bot job easier as well. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 08:13, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
Regarding categorising individuals by first name in Families - I always have, since by placing them in the category, we have already alphabetised them by surname. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 22:15, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
Update - struck a few more off the list, including the gender cats due to the excellent work by Starstuff and Freaktone. I also moved over all the other miscellaneous categories to Category:Individuals.
Works to do:
Create Category:Individuals by nationality and associated sub-cats and place in articles.
Add Category:Wizards to all known Wizards and Witches.
Add Category:Students to all known students.
Recategorise all articles in Category:Characters into appropriate categories.
On a side note - should we also rename/ amend Template:Character infobox to Template:Individual infobox, and Template:Character-stub to Template:Individual-stub? - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 01:37, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
French individuals sounds better. Also, it might be worth changing everyone from Category:Characters to Category:Wizards, since all Muggles and Squibs are properly categorised. We might have to manually categorise all other wizards who aren't in the Characters category unless you have a way to do it with your bot? - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 15:44, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
It' annoying when then happens :) Looking through the foreign characters category, we need to create a few more - Irish, Norwegian, etc. I'll get on it, and categorise the new categories as Category:Individuals by nationality. I was thinking, we may need to also have Category:British individuals to be complete. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 15:57, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

I've done Category:Individuals by nationality and associated sub-cats, including Category:Individuals of unknown nationality for obvious foreign characters. All the new categories should be in place, it's just adding Category:Wizards, Category:Students and Category:British individuals to the appropriate articles, and clearing Category:Characters now as far as I can see. We can either use your bot to re-cat all articles with Category:Characters to Category:Wizards, or we can do it manually like the gender recat to make sure we get everyone, including those who are not in Category:Characters. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 16:52, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Excellent. I guess we'll have to go through all the articles manually and check/ add categories. Still, the majority of the recategorisation is done. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 22:45, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Signature template

I was wondering if it was okay if I make my signature template Template:Signatures/C Teng, instead of [[User:C Teng/sig]], because that's how it's done in another wiki I edit. C Teng [talk] 23:35, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Monaco Skin

Sorry I've been gone for so long, never had the time...but how about the monaco skin that I made? Even if I'm not on I am still notified by email when my talk page is edited.-Matoro183 (Talk - Jimmy Fincher talk) 01:00, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Monaco skin and logo change

Hey, DJ - are we set for a custom Monaco skin? I was thinking that we should set one, and jazz it up with the whole nine yards like the Wookieepedia - banner background, etc. I've been using Monaco for a while now, and I like it. With that in mind, I created a new look logo:

Wiki-logo

I'm going to start a forum thread around it, to get a general feeling about changing the logo. What do you think? - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 09:13, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

The blue colour is the consequence of the original photo. I actually lightened it, but anymore and the image becomes a little strange. I image we have now isn't bad, but compare our front page to the Wook's or Halopedia, and we could be doing better. I would like a banner like the Wook's AT-AT/Hoth snowfield as well, possibly using a Hogwarts panorama. Also, I was looking at Wikia Central's Spotlight feature, and was thinking we should try and get on it. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 15:07, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
I'd say try it and see. You can always revert if it doesn't work :). I would come on IRC - but I'm about to leave work. Give me half an hour to get home and I'll try and join you for a little discussion. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 15:12, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Hey, sorry about not making it to IRC. Thunderstorm knocked out my wireless connection :( I like the new colours, and changing the header colours should be no problem at all. I'll work on them and hopefully upload new ones tomorrow. With this skin, I feel we definately need a new logo since it sticks out now. If not the one I designed, then something else. I also think a panorama border is a good idea. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 22:02, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
I've updated the front page image headers with a red/white combo. I tried the red/grey but it didn't work as well. Are we planning to change the white background to one of the greys, or leave it be? - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 23:37, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Potter wiki
Hi there! I liked your image idea, so I expanded on it a little, so that it's transparent and the image of Harry stays the correct dimensions. That picture you started with is a tough one to work with! Hope you like it. :)

And would this Hogwarts image be good for the background? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Peteparker (talkcontribs).

Yeah, we've had some people play around with that image a bit, but the resolution has been too smaller. That's a pretty good size though! Thanks. I don't suppose you have that in a really high resolution? -- DarkJedi613 (Talk) 20:40, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Here's the three I have: File:Hogwarts 1.jpg, File:Hogwarts 2.jpg, File:Hogwarts 3.jpg
The skin looks great! Glad I could help.

DarkJedi613-

Thanks for that answer. That really helped. If acceptable I would like to request to be an administrator or a beaurocrat. Layout and Skin

Hey, hows it going? I havent been on here in forever and i think im coming back. IS the gray background thing part of the wiki that I cant change? If it is, im not complaining, but its just different from the old one and I thought I'd ask. Also, it looks great! Good job! - Tyminator1 (Talk) 01:51, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Footer Links with New Skin

Hi, I came by to look something up, and saw your new skin. I think it looks great! I see from conversations here that you are stil tinkering with it, so I hope you find something that makes everyone happy. One thing I noticed is that the Wikia Footer text is very hard to read against the dark grey. Could you maybe change it to all black or all white so people could read it??

Also if you have any questions about the customization, please ask me on my talk page -- I'd be happy to help! -- Wendy (talk) 12:53, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

The grey text is a great idea -- it looks really good! -- Wendy (talk) 18:07, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Rollback Privileges

I just wanted to thank you for granting me rollback privileges. I was planning to request them earlier, so it was a nice surprise. Thanks again! Oread 16:18, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Main page

Sounds good. Also, I just realised that the DYK template can't be updated due to the cascading protection on the main page. Only sysops can actually edit it :/ We'll have to drop the cascade protection, keep the protection on the majority of the templates, and keep the DYK open to be editable by everyone. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 08:45, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

IRC

I like it. Should be enough information for everyone, and its easy enough to follow. Also, the DYK submissions is a nice idea ... I'll work it into the Community Portal revamp. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 16:16, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

New Front Page

Hey I was just in the HBP movie thread. I speant two hours editing that on tuesday, so if there is any grammar, let me know.

Anyway, I was on the front page and was wondering how I could edit that because it is kind of old and sloppy. If you know how to do that, I would like to do the news section.

ChaosMaster16 20:14, 21 May 2008 (UTC) ChaosMaster

I tried to edit it but it said it was locked, but no big deal atm.

Well, was just saying it was a littly out dated. I've been on here last month 4 times and it had the same EXACT things, news and all.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by ChaosMaster16 (talkcontribs).

Thanks so much!

Thanks so much for that help! I'm Courtney as you already know. Well, Thanks again. Maybe we can talk again some time.

Vandals

Dark Jedi I would like to point out that the users Astroglider and Some muggle, are vandalizing all pages on here. Deleting the content. Some muggle has already recieved a warning and is still doing it. Gryff23 01:19, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Skip the warnings and go straight to indef. The kind of stuff they're posting warrants it. It also looks like an organized attack, based on the fact that Some muggle and Astroglider are tag-teaming, so as to render rollback ineffective. We need more admins so that this kind of nonsense can be quickly dealt with before it gets out of hand. -Starstuff 01:33, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

So, what are we to do. What's going to happen to those two users. Gryff23 01:49, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

I'd like you to know that I end school for the summer in the middle of June, and I will try my hardest to log on as often as I can and make as many positive edits as I can to possibly work my way up to Rollback, if acceptable. Thanks. Gryff23 01:20, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

New Monaco

Wikia is changing monaco, trying to make it look more like monobook. Thus, the new monaco gets rid of the ad banner, and changes back to the old monobook logos. This completely eradicates our logo contest and the picture of Hogwarts at the top of the skin. Take a look at this. It looks cool, but we will also have to make some changes. The main page will have to be redesigned to match the ad box.-Matoro183 (Talk) 00:28, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Hey DJ - this new skin is causing a lot of contention throughout the various communities. Nearly everyone is against it, and the Wook is planning to leave Wikia if its implemented. - Cavalier One(Wizarding Wireless Network) 11:07, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
I don't get it...wikia wants to make it like monobook, but monobook's ads aren't obtrusive and ugly. What are they trying to do?-Matoro183 (Talk) 11:44, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Hello again, sorry to be a pain, as you can guess I'm quite new. But I was just wondering if the images on the 'Category:Fair use images' page are allowed to go in user pages or are they just for articles? Cheers. Palmala 19:20

Editing policy

A lot of the wiki's traffic lately had been several editors who keep basically adding pointless things to another user's talk page. Should this be stopped and something put in the Editing policy about it? Another thing about the editing policy. Some newer users will edit a page, and every single time they do, go to their user page and add that they edited that page. This tends to make users break the 15% mark in the User namespace. I think something should be put in the policy about that.-Matoro183 (Talk) 22:51, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Vandelism

Hi again, user: 87 248 31 79 on the recent changes page just vanelised Rupert Grint's and Daniel Radcliffe's pages. It wasn't a big obvious change, but just random letters like: 'ADDADD' and 'PDASK' where the word Potter was supposed to be. I've changed it, but I thought I should warn someone in case it happens again. Cheers Palmala 20:31 10 June
