I'm thinking about suggesting all the House Games, Quidditch, etc. be moved to w:c:harrypotterfanon (which I didn't realize existed until Matoro told me today on IRC). Any comments or ideas about how to go about this? -- DarkJedi613 (Talk) 21:27, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Matoro briefly warned against Truth-or-Dare here we'll see if it continues. Perhaps if we just suggest they check out the fanon wiki instead of saying to take the game there? Hmm... -- DarkJedi613 (Talk) 15:59, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Cedric Diggory

You keep reversing my edits to Cedric Diggory and state reasoning as "No quotes in middle of sections. No reason to break up perfectly good paragraphs. ", but many articles on this Wikia have quotes in the middle of sections, why is it that Cedric's should be any different? I understand that you worked hard on Cedric's article, but this Wikia is community based and we each contribute to the articles. You seem hostile to allowing change to this page. Comunity Portal--Projects

Hey Cavalier One,

I realized that there are many projects listed in the Projects section of the Community Portal, but most of them are now practically over. No users are paricipating, and the porjects are either on hiatus, or no longer in action. I guess it is up to the project leaders to decided rather to take it down or not, but if the projects are over, I personally see know reason to keep them posted, as it may confuse new users, as it confused me when I first joined. I am a little afraid to edit the portal myself, not being an admin or anything, so I thought I'd talk to an admin. So, if it's all right, could you erase the projects from the portal? Thanks. Active users

I wanted to clean up the Active Users list, but since there's no set policy, I thought I should run these criteria by an admin first.

  • 3 months of inactivity for all users who meet the same standards as Voting Policy (autoconfirmed, 20+ article edits).
  • 1 month of inactivity for users who do not. The reasoning being that there are several users who have done little or nothing beyond adding their names to the list, and if they haven't done anything in a month, it's unlikely they'll make any more contributions if they didn't do enough to begin with to even reach voting status.

Please let me know what you think. - Nick O'Demus 11:14, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Selected Pictures + QotW Nominations

Hey Cav,

I just got back from my summer break, and have been looking around the site, getting the hang of things again. I realized that both the SP and QotW nomination pages are getting really long. There are about 20 nominations for the SP and about 30 for QotW. Could you sort those out? I also wanted to point out that a lot of the QotW nominations were made by non-registered users, or the nominator has not even cast a supporting vote. I think we need to put a policy in place so that we can do something about them, because a bunch of nominations that haven't even been voted on is just plain annoying. I've noticed that a lot of the recent off-topic threads (particularly the ones that look like they were pulled straight from WikiAnswers) came from a similar range of unregistered I.P.s - Nick O'Demus 07:12, October 21, 2009 (UTC),,,,

Add,, and to the list. - Nick O'Demus 07:40, October 25, 2009 (UTC)
And here we go again: - Nick O'Demus 05:28, November 20, 2009 (UTC)

I think the culprit is JamesVI. I don't have any strong proof, other than the fact that he keeps asking simmilar questions (that he clearly already knows the answears to) on my talk page. First - How did Petter Pettigrew know that Harry was going to be in Little Hangleton. Then - Why did Petter Pettigrew become a Death Eater. I've already asked him to stop, but it might be worth looking into again. Jayden Matthews 08:15, October 21, 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. Now that I've asked him to stop he has moved on to Seth. Jayden Matthews 08:54, October 21, 2009 (UTC)

I'm not so sure it's him. JamesVI has at least made several article edits. The user with those IP's has done nothing but start forums. They don't even comment on them, they just start the topic. It might be this guy, but since they only made one (registered) edit like that, I can hardly say it's a pattern.
Also, I was looking at the Editing Policy, and I noticed this on the talk page:
"Do we really need the forum section anymore? I don't think anyone could excessively edit on the Wizengamot."
No disrespect to Matoro183, but given the recent activity, I did find it amusing. - Nick O'Demus 13:22, October 21, 2009 (UTC)
So what should we do? -- GrouchMan (Send an owl then scram!!) 22:06, October 21, 2009 (UTC)
Not much we can do really. Range blocking IPs may mean that some legitimate editors find themselves blocked. All I can do is keep on top of it, perhaps tighten the rules regarding forum editing policy and start handing out punitive blocks to those editors who disrupt the flow of the wiki. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 12:37, October 22, 2009 (UTC)
What do you mean some legitimate editors may find themselves blocked? -- GrouchMan (Send an owl then scram!!) 15:45, October 22, 2009 (UTC)

Some anonymous editors have the same IP adresses. Jayden Matthews 16:40, October 22, 2009 (UTC)

What do you mean anonymous? -- GrouchMan (Send an owl then scram!!) 17:41, October 22, 2009 (UTC)
Editors without a user name: the anonymous IP addresses. --Cubs Fan (Talk to me) 17:42, October 22, 2009 (UTC)
Oh. So how are we gonna find the real culprit so the innocent users don't get blocked too? -- GrouchMan (Send an owl then scram!!) 20:18, October 22, 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure if there is anything we can do about it. IP sharing has always been a problem in Wiki editing, because innocent anonymous editors are always liable to be blocked by mistake. One thing I would suggest doing, is having a quiet, private word with those who continue to respond to these forums when they have been told many times not to. Jayden Matthews 07:47, October 24, 2009 (UTC)

How do we do that? -- GrouchMan (Send an owl then scram!) 11:52, October 24, 2009 (UTC)

Search changed?

Hi. In the last months, I´ve always checked the contents of infoboxes by copying the headline of them into the search. ("{{Individual infobox" ) The results were all articles uing the infobox appearing on a list. When I tried it around two days ago, it didn´t work and the following massage appeared:

"No search results for that term."

Why has the search system been changed? Is there a(n) (optional) possibility to restore thhe preveous version? Hoping for an answer, --Rodolphus 17:56, October 22, 2009 (UTC)

Wikia released a new search system, which, among other things, displays results in the rendered text of the pages rather than the raw source with MediaWiki markup. Something you could do is simply look at what transcludes the template. You can read about the change in the search system here. Cheers, Grunny (Talk) 03:37, October 23, 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. That helps.--Rodolphus 08:55, October 23, 2009 (UTC)

Re: Warning

Cavalier, while I appreciate and respect this wiki's policies and guidelines, I really must oppose your latest decision on warning me in regards to my edit count. While I have been editing the forums over the past few weeks, I have realised that admins are willing to keep certain forums pertaining to Harry Potter, if they contain valuable pieces of information that could be used for article edits in future. On the whole, I would say that most, if not all my participation in forum pages has yielded such information. In comparison to the more technical comments I have left, there are very few of which that have "devolved" to simple discussion.

What I am trying to say is that I really do like providing detailed analyses in forum questions that regard Harry Potter itself, and I have always done my best to provide useful information that really has potential for article use. Now I have said that I will revert to my usual (what I like to think as) informative writing style and refrain from answering trivial questions and having conversations. I have made several changes to articles since I started at this wiki so it is not as though I merely answer questions in forums. Apparently I have made more numbers of forum edits than I have article edits, which is why I have been warned. To what end? Why exactly is editing forums (at least the way I do) such a crime? I'm still contributing my knowledge to help the wiki, am I not? Surely, the quality of edits is worth more than the quantity.--Yin&Yang 13:58, October 28, 2009 (UTC)

I think we should consider bringing back the Leaky Cauldron forum for discussions that are relevant to article content but not to the wiki as a whole. Casual topics like "Should Harry Have Ended Up With Luna?" and "Who is Cooler: Harry or Draco?" don't serve any purpose on this wiki, but topics like "Do we know Umbridge's House?" and "How many students are there at Hogwarts?" can be useful, in that they allow us to go over the evidence and then edit the applicable article(s) accordingly. Starstuff (Owl me!) 05:34, October 30, 2009 (UTC)

Please go to

Re:Leaky Cauldron forum

I think that "How many students at Hogwarts?"-type threads serve to highlight areas in which our article coverage is lacking, because if someone is motivated to ask a question in the forum, it means they didn't find the answer in one of our articles. When the Leaky Cauldron forum was closed, threads of this type — as well as casual threads that serve no purpose — spilled over into the Wizengamot forum, so I thought that reopening the Leaky Cauldron might resolve the issue, at least in part. I figured that shifting content-related threads to a separate forum would make it easier to keep track of threads related directly to the wiki.

The suggestion to transfer discussions to article talk pages is a good one, but one issue that comes to mind is that posts to article talk pages tend to get lost on the list of recent changes, and thus posting to the forum is generally a good way to ensure that a topic gets noticed. Perhaps the solution would be to set up some kind of noticeboard where users could post requests for others to reply to threads they've started on article talk pages? Starstuff (Owl me!) 18:19, November 2, 2009 (UTC)

RE:Correcting redirects

I'm sorry Cavalier. I didn't think it was that unnecessary. -- GrouchMan (Send an owl then scram!!) 20:57, November 8, 2009 (UTC)

We seem to be getting a lot of this recently, from a variety of I.P.'s. Are the other Wiki's getting hit too, or is it just us? - Nick O'Demus 09:15, November 12, 2009 (UTC)

Protect pages

Could you please give Rubeus Hagrid and Grawp semiprotected status, at least for a little while? There's an unregistered IP that keeps adding inaccurate categories to both pages. It started with adding Only children to Hagrid's article. When it was removed, they re-added it. When it was pointed out that he has a half-brother, instead of stopping, they started adding the category to Grawp's article too. They've repeatedly done this no matter how many times it's been reverted, and they keep shifting IP addresses after one or two edits. So far they've used,,, and - Nick O'Demus 22:59, November 15, 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I know it's fairly minor vandalism, more of a nuisance really, but it's better than constantly having to watch the articles and keep reverting the changes. - Nick O'Demus 11:44, November 16, 2009 (UTC)

RE:Wrock articles

Thanks Cavalier. -- GrouchMan (Send an owl then scram!!) 16:35, November 16, 2009 (UTC)

I think there needs to be a discussion about which Wrock bands are notable enough to have their own articles. I found this listing on Wizrocklopedia, and there's around nine-hundred of them, each with their own MySpace page. I've put my preliminary findings about what could be considered "noteable" here. - Nick O'Demus 09:04, November 17, 2009 (UTC)

Proposal for New Policy (Yin&Yang)

Hi Cavalier. Okay, this is a lot longer than I thought it would be but this discussion is so complex I couldn't write it any other way. Also, I have no idea how this will be displayed so I assumed that it would be done so as a discussion. I know you mentioned a table, but maybe said table could have a link to this page so that the voters can read the argument in full. So could you present everything under and including Canon Policy Proposal on the forum? This has taken up a lot of your talk page so feel free to delete it once it is on the forum. Can you assure me that unregistered users can vote on this?

Canon Policy Proposal:

The following is the basis supporting the ‘for’ side of the argument which proposes to remove the second and third tier from the Canon Policy as a means of following the statements of J.K. Rowling who views the books/her own creative story/her word-of-mouth information and the films/videogames as “separate entities”. This adheres to part of the policy which essentially states that Rowling’s word is law. The overlap between the “separate” storylines in this wiki is very great, often blurring the boundaries between what should be separate (according to Rowling) and what is not. If the aforementioned tiers are removed, this would NOT mean that all the references, sources, articles, in-text quotes or images pertaining to the films and videogames found within the wiki would be deleted, but rather, no longer included under the title of in-universe.

There are two possible repercussions to this; and a choice would need to be made between Situation [a] and Situation [b]. The former ([a]) would mean that any language found within text that is written from the perspective of in-universe would require editing to conform to the altered policy. For example, the line: Bellatrix was present during the Battle of the Astronomy Tower in 1996, a statement worked from the current policy, would be changed to: In the film, Bellatrix was present during the Battle of the Astronomy Tower in 1996. Also included under Situation [a], would be that all article pages devoted entirely to a character, location or object existing only in the films or videogames would be given a tag identical to those present given to the current out-of-universe pages e.g. those relating to the actors of the real world.

Situation [b] would still include the use of tags on pages wholly dedicated to films or videogames, yet would differ greatly and admittedly require fewer alterations to in-text language, than if Situation [a] was selected. If Situation [b] is chosen, then there would be a rule enforced to ensure that all relevant articles have ‘Behind the Scenes’ sections in which it is clearly pointed out that a certain event only occurs in a film or book. Since most, if not all pages, already do that, there would be very little effort required to conform to the change in policy.

Supporting Evidence for Reason of Change: The current policy regarding ‘canonical’ information, while well thought out, fails to cover all the appropriate aspects of what should be included as an in-universe topic. In other words, there is a loophole in which contradicting versions of the Harry Potter storyline crosses over inconsistently. Here is an example of such a case: Sirius Black's death: The book (Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix) does not describe the colour of the fatal jet of light that strikes Sirius's chest. This is most unlike the film adaptation which clearly indicates Bellatrix Lestrange murdering Sirius with the Killing Curse. The article, Sirius Black, states that Sirius was killed by an unknown spell due to the book’s omission of the spell’s description. According to the current policy however, an omission from the book allows the film priority meaning that it was the Avada Kedavra that indeed killed Sirius. This is where the consistency halts, however. If it is accepted that the Killing Curse destroyed Sirius, and the Killing Curse itself, as laid out by the books, causes instant death then that does not explain why Sirius took a slightly extended period of time for him to die (again as described in the book). In conclusion, only a policy that firmly stands by Rowling and her books would be consistent. --Yin&Yang November, 2009 (UTC)

I don't have any problems with that article of Sirius, stating the details on how he was killed. Because that bit info. showing the importance of the Veil. (imo)

Note: Sirius was NOT killed by an unknown spell. The article says He was struck with an unnamed curse and pushed through a veil in the Death Chamber, to his death. --ÈnŔîčö DCRavenclawcrest(Send me an Owl!) 19:33, November 18, 2009 (UTC)

Voting Rules

Okay Cavalier, the vote is underway. That I am happy about, the rules set up around the voting... Not so much. I understand why a new user is not allowed to vote, but it is a little unfair that there are still users out there who have no idea that this debate is going on. The only people to have voted so far are the people directly involved in the debate and we all know that I am quite alone in that group. I ask you to give me some time to do a little "advertising" to other users so that know what is going on and tell them why they should bother reading through the lengthy discussion we have been performing over the past few days. If there is a way of spreading the message a little further, please let me know before you cut the one week deadline short. This has to be as fair as possible, no matter how different our views.--Yin&Yang 14:18, November 18, 2009 (UTC)

I would appreciate that. Thankyou. Also, I was unaware of this so-called "vote-farming" being against the rules too but I had absolutely no intent of literally making ads to post, anyway. I was, as you said, planning on posting a few neutral comments on a some (not every) talk pages. Can I just say that your commanding tone is a little unnecessary? I was not trying to defy anyone, I was just letting you know what I was planning to do.--Yin&Yang 14:45, November 18, 2009 (UTC)

Re: Warning

I won't continue leaving messages on peoples' pages, but I refuse to label doing so as "harrassment". Like I said to You-Know-Who, I was not intending to get his vote, just tell him that he had voted twice and presented false information about my side of the argument. That is all.--Yin&Yang 08:36, November 19, 2009 (UTC)

RE:Redirects on your own talk page

Thanks Cavalier. -- GrouchMan (Send an owl then scram!!) 12:51, November 19, 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Cav. Could you please delete User:Jayden Matthews/monaco.css? It was a test wich I've now moved to a diffrent site. Thanks. Jayden Matthews 14:40, November 26, 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I definately wasn't planning on establishing a competing wiki. I can promise you that. The hptest wiki is just a playground where I can work on a proposal for this wiki's skin. I've been thinking about it for a while, but I didn't want to start a discussion about it until I actually had something to propose to the community. Thanks again. Jayden Matthews 14:52, November 26, 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Cav. Yeah, the films were my inspiration. Originally I was trying a sort of "Mauraders Map" theme, simmilar to the Elder Scrolls Wiki. But then I thought - It's not really very original, and it looked quite plain. So I decided to try to the film route. That blue/green theme has been used to represent the films since OOTP, so it seemed appropriate. I have spoken to a few others. Seth has suggested a few things I can do to clean it up a bit so I'm doing that at the moment. I had already thought about the logo, and I think it's close to perfection. Basically it's the same thing we have now except the crystal ball is whole and dead center. It's also transparent, which means the rock and the waves are visable in the ball. I'm also working on 3-D versions of the FA DYK headers etc. Anyay, thanks for the advice, I'll try to implement your suggestions. Jayden Matthews 11:51, November 27, 2009 (UTC)

Monaco proposal

Hi, Cav. I think my proposal is pretty much ready. There still seems to be some coding issues, as the color occasionally dissapears from the toolbox area, but I don't know how to fix that. I've tried to incorporate everyone's suggestions. I removed the image from the toolbar as Starstuff recommended. And I took Seth's advice and toned down the blue, and added more black, white and gray. The only thing I've not been able to do is the logo I wanted, because my skills at image manipulation are not sufficent (and I'm using crappy Gimp2). The only thing I can think of is to include an extra option in the voting area, whereby the community can choose to keep the current logo if they wish. Well, that's pretty much it. Do I have your approval? Jayden Matthews 09:59, November 30, 2009 (UTC)

OK, thanks. It's just that, this is a really tight community, one that's been very kind to me. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't stepping on any toes. As for the sidebar, sorry, I forgot all about it. I wasn't suggesting that we reorganize it at any rate. As for the logo, I've tried recoloring it. The only problem is when you do that, everything in it gets recolored. Voldemort's face, the lettering, the highlights on the orb everything, and it really doesn't look good. Like I said, I don't have the skills to do a more proffesional job of it. I think it would be better to let the community decde between keeping the current skin, adopting the new skin with the new logo or adopting the new skin with the old logo. It amounts to the same thing at the end oft the day. Jayden Matthews 10:51, November 30, 2009 (UTC)

OK. the ball is rolling. Jayden Matthews 11:34, November 30, 2009 (UTC)

Protect from Recreation list

Recently I've been trying to clean out the Wanted pages, and I came across this (Harry Potter Wiki:Protected (Link removed)). The last edit to to it was two years ago, and I was wondering if it should be updated, or if it's even necessary to keep it at all. What do you think? At the very least, I'd like to remove the pipe links so they don't show up on the wanted pages, if that's alright. - Nick O'Demus 08:59, December 1, 2009 (UTC)

Alright, thanks. Don't forget the redirect, HPW:P - Nick O'Demus 09:26, December 1, 2009 (UTC)
I've just about finished with the Wanted pages, but there are a few left in some Users' talk pages and archives. I'll be asking for permission from each User first, and I'd like to check yours too. If it's simply a misdirected link, I'll fix it, and if it's a deleted article/file/template, I'll either remove the brackets or put "nowiki" around it so it isn't active. If you'd like, when I'm finished I can leave you a full account of any changes I made.
This should knock the final list down to around 250 (from 950 at the start). Those that are left are mostly linked to Wiki templates, and I'm not going to mess with those. - Nick O'Demus 17:21, December 3, 2009 (UTC)

how did you do all this stuff to wiki contact me at please

My Signiture

Hi Cavalier. Since I'm in contact with you at the moment, I thought I'd just ask you a question to do with my signiture. When I first registered to the wiki, Quidditch Lover asked me if I would like her to help customise my signiture. I agreed, but for some reason, the code she told me to type in my "Signiture" box didn't work and after trying several variations of the code (with slight tweaks here and there), I pretty much gave it up as a bad job. Recently, Quidditch Lover owled me to say that she thinks that the ampersand symbol in my user name could be interfering with the processing. Is there anyway that I could customise my signiture without changing my user name? I'm getting a little bored with: --Yin&Yang 09:23, December 1, 2009 (UTC)

Uh, to be honest, I don't think I have a code right now. It's just the standard, default signiture, isn't it?--Yin&Yang 04:31, December 2, 2009 (UTC)

I believe Yin&Yang has {{SUBST:User:Yin&Yang/sig}} in his signature box and the Custom Signature box checked. (Correct me if I'm wrong, Yin.) Is this what you meant, Cav? QuidditchLoverSnitch 2(My talk)(contribs) 05:21, December 4, 2009 (UTC)
Yes, that is what I meant, Quidditch Lover :) I'll continue this over on Yin&Yang's talk page. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 11:05, December 4, 2009 (UTC)

Hi Cav, thanks for that detailed paragraph you left on my talk page. It turns out that I didn't have a use for it afterall, seeing as Quidditch Lover was able to help me out. All the same, I appreciate the assistance. What do you think of my new signiture, by the way?--Yin & YangTalk to me! 08:33, December 5, 2009 (UTC)

Massage error

Today, I recieved an automatic owl, but when I viewed it on my userpage, the massage saying i´ve got an owl didn´t disappear after changing back to other pages. Is this a wiki error?--Rodolphus 18:25, December 4, 2009 (UTC)

It doesn´t show up anymore. Strange.--Rodolphus 18:55, December 4, 2009 (UTC)

Nymphadora Tonks

Sorry, but why did you change Nymphadora Tonks's article? I've put two more sections on the relationships (Weasley family and order of the phoenix members). User:Quirinus Quirrell

Ok, I don't speak very good English. But can you keep the main information in order to edit again the section? User:Quirinus Quirrell

Oh, I forgot! Why did you put the section "Order of the Phoenix" before "Second Wizarding War"? Tonks became member of the order during the war. User:Quirinus Quirrell

Okay. I just thought the war began after Voldemort's return. User:Quirinus Quirrell

Are you Dutch?

I'm Station7 and I saw your summary Nee? That's in my land written in that way. So are you Dutch, if not from what country are you coming?--Station7 21:07, December 5, 2009 (UTC)
