Substitute Professor of Care of Magical Creatures

"My name is Professor Grubbly-Plank. I am your temporary Care of Magical Creatures teacher."
—Professor Grubbly-Plank announcing herself to a class.[src]

Professor Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank was a level-headed and pipe-smoking witch who worked as a Substitute Professor for Care of Magical Creatures. She attended a wizarding school, likely Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry unless she was educated at home, after purchasing her wand from Diagon Alley. She achieved an O.W.L. and perhaps even an N.E.W.T. in Care of Magical Creatures, which was probably taught by Professor Silvanus Kettleburn at the time. At some point after her graduation, Grubbly-Plank became a substitute teacher specialising in magical creatures, and would fill in for Care of Magical Creatures professors whenever they were absent. It's unknown exactly how long she had had a career as a substitute professor, but she worked in that career well into her old years, when she had grey, close-cropped hair.

During the 1994–1995 school year at Hogwarts, Professor Grubbly-Plank filled in for Professor Rubeus Hagrid, the Care of Magical Creatures teacher, and taught the fourth year students about Unicorns. The reason for Professor Hagrid's absence was that a defamatory article was written about him by Rita Skeeter, an infamous yellow journalist. After teaching for about a month, Hagrid returned to his teaching post and Grubbly-Plank was sent away, presumably after being payed. The following year, Hagrid was, yet again, absent from the school, and Grubbly-Plank was re-employed to take over his classes until his return. That year, she led the first years from Hogsmeade Station across the Black Lake to the castle, where Professor McGonagall took them over the rules. Later on, her lessons were inspected by Dolores Umbridge, the Hogwarts High Inquisitor, and satisfied her by teaching her fifth years about Crups and Knarls. She nursed Harry Potter's owl, Hedwig, back to health after her attack in October, and left the school during the second week of November.

Early Life

Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank was born long before the 1990s. She was educated in the magical arts, possibly at her home by her parents, but more likely at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry under either Albus Dumbledore, Armando Dippet, Newton Scamander or Phineas Nigellus Black. She chose Care of Magical Creatures as an elective subject in her third year, which she excelled at, and was probably taught by the reckless Silvanus Kettleburn, in a classroom in the main castle. In her fifth year, Grubbly-Plank sat her Ordinary Wizarding Level examinations, during which she had to choose the correct diet for a sick unicorn, and achieved either an Acceptable (A), Exceeds Expectations (E) or Outstanding (O). Also that year, she was re. She may have also sat her Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests in her seventh year, unless she dropped out in her sixth.

Life as a Substitute Teacher

Earlier Career

"Boys keep back! They prefer the woman's touch, unicorns. Girls to the front and approach with care. Come on, easy does it..."
—Professor Grubbly-Plank teaching at a Wizarding School.[src]

At some point after leaving her school, Grubbly-Plank became a substitute Professor of Care of Magical Creatures classes, filling in whenever teachers were absent or otherwise unable to attend their lessons. Because of this, it is possible that she took over for Silvanus Kettleburn, a Hogwarts Professor, during his periods of probation, but perhaps not all sixty-two of them. During her career, she may have visited and taught at many schools other than Hogwarts, such as Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, Durmstrang Institute, Salem Witches' Institute or the Brazilian Wizarding School.

During the 1994–1995 school year, Rubeus Hagrid, the Care of Magical Creatures Professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, refused to teach after a defamotary article was written about him by Rita Skeeter, an infamous Yellow Journalist. To teach during his absence, Albus Dumbledore employed Professor Grubbly-Plank to take Hagrid's lessons in his stead.
