Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (released as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the United States) is the name of five distinct video games based on the first book of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

[edit] Plot
- Further information: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Harry Potter, an orphaned eleven-year-old boy living with his aunt and uncle, learns that he is a Wizard and leaves to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Over the course of the year, he learns the spells that will help him defeat the most evil wizard in the world, Lord Voldemort.
[edit] Gameplay
The game is generally a platform game, with the player having to negotiate areas and fufill tasks essential to the storyline to move on to the next stage of the game. The game progresses in a linear fashion, following the storyline of the novel. However, different versions deviate from the narrative, or reorder scenes. Some scenes are removed entirely or expanded upon depending on which version is being played.
[edit] Versions
The first four versions of the game were released in 2001 by Electronic Arts for the PC, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and the PlayStation. The PC version was ported to the Mac by Aspyr in 2002. Another version, for GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox, was released in 2003.
The plot of all the games roughly follows the plot of the book, starting from Harry's first night at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There are some deviations made for the sake of gameplay. Visually, the style of the game is closer to the film in terms of character and environment design.
[edit] PC, PlayStation 1, and Game Boy Advance versions
The PC, PlayStation 1, and Game Boy Advance versions of the game were released on the 15th of November, 2001, in the United States, and a day later across Europe. It was released by Electronic Arts. KnowWonder developed the PC version, Griponite Games was responsible for the Game Boy Advance version, while the PlayStation 1 version was developed by Argonaut Games. As a result of having different developers, each game is unique, although they share the basic storyline.
The PC version has a unique way of learning spells. When a spell is to be learnt, the player must use the mouse to "draw" the spell in the air. The better the player is at this task, the more House points they will earn. After the spell is learnt, the player may use the spell at any time using the "point and click" method.
[edit] Game Boy Colour version
The Game Boy Colour version of the game was released on the 15th of November, 2001, in the United States, and a day later across Europe. It was released by Electronic Arts, and developed by KnowWonder.
Unlike the other Philosopher's Stone games released at the same time, this version was based on the traditional RPG format. The player would have to guide Harry through the game, acquiring items and fighting battles to "level up" the character and unlock more powerful spells.
[edit] PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Gamecube versions
In 2003, a new version of the game was created and released by Electronic Arts. Developed by Warthog, the game was released on the 9th of December, 2003, in the United States, and on the 12th of December, 2003, across Europe. The game featured the same gameplay across all three platforms, although the PS2 version is generally considered to be harder than the other two.
[edit] Lists
Below are lists of some of the characters, enemies, items and spells encountered throughout the game. As there are five different versions of the game, all with differing styles of play, some elements may appear in one version, but not in another. Some may appear in multiple versions, and some may only appear in one version.

[edit] Differences
Because of the differing gameplay, there are marked differences between the original book and the games, and differences within each version of the game itself.
Peeves
- Peeves is present in the game versions, playing a differing role each time. He acts as a minor boss that the player must overcome to progress.
Forbidden Forest
- In the PC version, the player does not venture into the Forbidden Forest.
Quidditch
- In the book, Harry's broomstick is jinxed in the first Quidditch match. In the PC version, neither of the two Quidditch matches feature the jinxed broom. In the PS2/Gamecube/XBox version, the Slytherin match is played on a jinxed broom. There are no Quidditch matches at all in the GBA version.
Lord Voldemort
- In the book, Lord Voldemort summons ropes to tie Harry by snapping his fingers. In the PC version, Voldemort moves his hands to conjure fire around the area, but not in the PS1 version. In the PS2/XBox/Gamecube versions, the player must battle several Gytrashes before battling Quirrell directly. In the final battle, the player must reflect Voldemort's spells back at him using the Mirror of Erised. In all the video games, Voldemort is the final boss.
Diagon Alley
- Harry and Hagrid visit Diagon Alley once in chapter five on Philosopher's Stone. In several versions, Harry and Hagrid are stated to have visited Diagon Alley, but their visit is not actually depicted. In the PS2/XBox/Gamecube versions, Harry visits Diagon Alley once and learns the basics of the game from Mr. Ollivander in an extended sequence at his wand shop.
Potions
- Several Potions classes are depicted in the book. In several of the games versions, he is trapped in the Dungeons and has to find his way out. In the book, he is never trapped in the Dungeons.
Philosopher's Stone Challenges
- In the book, there are seven obstacles guarding the Philosopher's Stone; Fluffy, the Devil's Snare, the Flying Key Chamber, the Giant Chess Game, a Troll, a Potions Chamber and the Mirror of Erised. In the PC version, the Troll is replaced by a block puzzle. In the PS2/XBox/Gamecube versions, there are only four challenges; the Devils snare (Fluffy is already asleep), Flying Keys Chamber, the Chess Game and the Mirror of Erised.
Harry Fainting
- In the book, Harry falls unconscious while Quirrell is dying, but still alive. In the PC version, Harry faints from the explosion that destroys Quirrell/Voldemort. In the PS1 version, Harry passes out from the impact of the green orbs that Voldemort shoots. In the GBC version, after Harry has defeated Voldemort in battle, Voldemort leaps at Harry, hand outstretched, and the screen greens out.
Norbert
- In the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube versions of the game, Norbert is not mentioned nor does he make an appearance.
[edit] Behind the scenes
- Fans criticise the PS2, Gamecube and XBox versions of the game for its lack of imagination since all the spells in this game are in the video game Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets [citation needed].
