Moody's Challenges
Event information

Classroom 3C, Hogwarts Castle, Scotland, Great Britain

Between 24 February and 24 June, 1995

A private lesson given to Harry Potter to prepare him for the Third Task of the Triwizard Tournament.

"You were a damn fool during the second Triwizard task, Potter. Which is why I've devised this practical lesson in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Get to it. And remember; Constant vigilance!"
—Barty Crouch introduces Harry to the coming lesson.[src]

Moody's Challenges was the name of a set of tasks Bartemius Crouch Jr. (disguised as Alastor Moody at the time) assigned to Harry Potter as part of a private Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson sometime between the Second and Third Tasks of the 1994-1995 Triwizard Tournament. They involved defeating a series of magical creatures, occasionally under stringent conditions.

Background information

Main article: Triwizard Tournament

In 1994, the ancient Triwizard Tournament was restarted between the schools of Hogwarts, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. Voldemort intended to use this tournament as a way to bring Harry Potter, whose blood he needed to return to a permanent physical body, to him. To this end, he sent his Death Eater Bartemius Crouch Jr. to Hogwarts under the guise of Alastor Moody, who was set to take over the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor. In this position, Crouch tried everything in his power to assure that Harry would make it to the end of the tournament and take the Triwizard Cup, which Crouch could make into a Portkey to Voldemort.

During the Second Task of the Triwizard Tournament, which was to save a person the Champion cared about from the bottom of the Black Lake, Harry managed to reach the four hostages first. However, he was worried about the safety of the hostages (misinterpreting the task's clue as saying that the hostages would die if not freed within an hour), and thus returned to the surface last overall. However, when informed of his actions by the lake's Merpeople colony, the Triwizard judges decided to award him second place for "moral fibre". Despite this, Crouch was disappointed in Harry's performance.

The lesson

"Make your way through the classroom, Potter. And keep your wits about you!"
—Crouch gives Harry advice before starting the lesson.[src]

Sometime prior to the Third Task, Crouch invited Harry to his classroom for a private, practical Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson, in order to prepare Harry for the coming task. He led Harry into a small area in the back of the classroom, in which he had set up a variety of magical creatures to fight.

The first set of creatures was a group of Dugbogs. Though the conventional method for defeating these creatures was with basic offensive spells, Moody forced Harry to use the Levitation Charm to maneuver a large dresser around to crush them with. To make the task harder, the dresser was very fragile, requiring Harry to fix it with the Mending Charm every time he dropped it.
