These thestrals were part of the Hogwarts Thestral Herd. They were used by Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Ginny Weasley, Neville Longbottom, and Luna Lovegood to fly to the Department of Mysteries after Harry had a dream about Lord Voldemort torturing Sirius Black. They were drawn to them by the giant blood soaking Harry and Hermione. After they got there these Thestrals began scavenging for food in dumpsters they presumably flew back to Hogwarts.
