These Tropical birds were used by Sirius Black to correspond with Harry Potter, rather than owls. They were native to the place where Sirius hid out in 1994. They are said to barely fit through Harry's window so they were apparently larger than most owls.
Hedwig did not approve of them, considering them to be "flashy intruders" and did not like them drinking from her water tray.[1]
