During their education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry the trio played important roles in many major events.

In their first year they protected the Philosopher's Stone from Lord Voldemort and delayed his rise to power. In their second year they solved they mystery of the Chamber of Secrets, with Hermione doing the background research and Harry putting the pieces together. In 1993, while in their third year they were apart of the events of 6 June. Harry, Ron, and Hermione learned the truth regarding the deaths of Harry's parents. Sirius Black originally believed to be the person to betray James and Lily Potter was falsely accused and the real traitor was reveled to be Peter Pettigrew, who was until then believed to be dead. In 1995 the trio founded Dumbledore's Army an organization with the goal of training students in practical defensive magic, taught by Harry himself. The training would later come in handy when six of the members (Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Ginny Weasley, Luna Lovegood, and Neville Longbottom) fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries after being lured there by Voldemort himself. On the 30 June, 1997 in their sixth year Harry, Ron, Hermione fought in the Battle of the Astronomy Tower. The battle broke out after Death Eaters invaded Hogwarts when the intent of murdering Albus Dumbledore and succeed.

The trio dropped out of Hogwarts in their seventh year to hunt down and destroy all of Voldemort's Horcruxes. They had found and destroyed all of them except for one. After returning to Hogwarts to destroy the last remaining Horcrux, Voldemort issued an ultimatum. The ultimatum stated that if he was given Harry he would leave the school untouched, a battle broke out after the students and staff refused to hand over Harry. This was the final battle of the Second Wizarding War. On 2 May, 1998 Voldemort attacked the school with his army of wizards and magical creatures alike, with the sole purpose of murdering Harry. After Ron and Hermione destroyed Hufflepuff's cup and after the Diadem was beyond magical repair, Voldemort called for a one-hour arm-stance and spoke to Harry directly, telling him to come to the Forbidden Forest. Harry eventually ventured into the forest alone. He ventured into the forest after finding out that he was the final Horcrux and that the piece of Voldemort's soul residing inside him must be destroyed by Voldemort himself. In the forest he allowed himself to be struck with the Killing Curse and the Horcrux was no more. After the Death Eaters victory march, were they carried Harry's "dead" body back to the school, the second half of the battle broke out and Harry defeated Voldemort once and for all.

Post 1998
After the war the trio helped to create a new and better world. They were all featured on Chocolate Frog Cards for their accomplishment and became high-ranking officials in the Ministry of Magic. During the early 2000s Ron and Hermione were married and later had two children Rose and Hugo Weasley. Harry married Ginny Weasley and the couple had three children: James Sirius, Albus Severus, and Lily Luna Potter.

A short clip of the trio in their first year at Hogwarts.

 • The term has been widely adopted by fans and is used for the title of "The Trio theme" heard in the films of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Harry Potter series author J. K. Rowling also once used the term in a 2007 interview.[1]
 • Interestingly, the members of the Golden Trio have all three of the blood statuses of the wizarding world as Harry is a half-blood, Ron is a pure-blood, and Hermione is a Muggle-born.
 • The Trio also differ from each other in appearance. They each have different eye colours. Harry has green eyes (although portrayed as blue in the films), Ron has blue eyes (although often portrayed as green or brown), and Hermione has brown eyes.
 • They not only have differing eye colours, but also various hair colours. Harry has black hair (although portrayed as brown in the films), Ron has red hair, and Hermione has brown hair (although portrayed as dirty blonde in the films).
 • All three members are related or blood related to the Weasleys, as Ron is a Weasley, Hermione married Ron making her a Weasley by marriage, and Harry married into the Weasley family through Ginny making him an in-law to the Weasley family, as well.
 • Each of their wand cores is a core of the wands made in Ollivander's: Hermione's wand's core is dragon heartstring, Ron's first and second wand cores are unicorn hair, and Harry's is phoenix tail feather.
 • Interestingly, despite Harry being the leader of the Trio he is actually the youngest of the Trio. Whereas Hermione is the oldest and Ron is the second oldest.
 • The three bring different parts to the Trio, Harry brings leadership and power, Ron brings muscle and comedy, and Hermione brings intelligence and reason.
 • The Trio is an example of a Freudian Trio.
