- September 11, 2008: Amazon has released many copies of the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone anniversary edition early! The bonus content includes a drawing by J. K. Rowling of Severus Snape. [1]
- September 9, 2008: A verdict in the J. K. Rowling and Warner Bros. vs. RDR books lawsuit has reached a verdict. The ruling is in favor of J.K. and Warner Bros. [2]
- August 14, 2008: The release date for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince film has been pushed back by over seven months (from November 2008 to July 17, 2009). Reasons cited included that the "summer season is an ideal window" for release and that Warner Bros. is "still feeling the repercussions of the writers' strike."[3]
- July 31, 2008: The Tales of Beedle the Bard will be released on December 4, 2008, with the proceeds going to charity. [4]

- May 29, 2008: J. K. Rowling has penned an 800 word prequel to the Harry Potter series for charity auction. The story will be set three years before the birth of Harry Potter, and will focus on the Marauders.
- May 24, 2008: Robert Knox, who was cast in the role of Marcus Belby in the upcoming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (film), was tragically killed when he was stabbed outside of a pub in Sidcup, England.[6][7]
- March 12, 2008: Warner Brothers have confirmed that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be split into two parts to do justice to the book. David Yates, director of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will return to direct. Part I will be released in November of 2010, and Part II in May of 2011.[8]
- February 2, 2008: Actress Scarlett Byrne is announced as playing Pansy Parkinson in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.[9]
