"'He's got lots 'o rats and some brandy fer the journey,' said Hagrid in a muffled voice. 'An' I've packed his teddy bear in case he gets lonely.' From inside the crate came ripping noises that sounded to Harry as though the teddy was having his head torn off."
— Norbert(a)'s teddy bear suffers a grim fate[src]

A teddy bear was a stuffed toy that was played with by Muggle and wizarding children alike, shaped roughly in the form of a bear.

A kiosk in London, England sold teddy bears dressed as British policemen and members of the Queen's Guard, along with other British-themed merchandise for tourists, during the late 1990s.[8]

Known owners[]

Abraham Ronen[]

Abraham Ronen kept a teddy bear in his bedroom at Hogwarts Castle while serving as Charms Master at the school.[1]

Norberta[]

Two weeks after Norberta, a Norwegian Ridgeback dragon, hatched in 1992, she grew so large that her keeper, Rubeus Hagrid, was forced to ship her off to the Romanian Dragon Sanctuary. Fearing that she would be lonely on the way there, Hagrid put her teddy bear inside the crate, but she quickly tore it to shreds.[3]

Ron Weasley[]

At the age of three, Ron Weasley had his teddy bear turned into a "dirty great spider" by his older brother Fred, because he broke Fred's toy broomstick. This event triggered Ron's fear of spiders.[4]

Harry Potter[]

When Harry Potter was an infant, he owned a teddy bear at Godric's Hollow.[5][6]

Ben Copper[]

Ben Copper had a teddy bear named Teddy and brought it to school as of the 1985–1986 school year. He thought he had brought it to one of his Flying lessons, consequently losing it during class. He then asked for Jacob's sibling's help to search for it. After the search and unable to find his teddy bear, Ben concluded that he might have left it in his other robes.[7]

Esme Page[]

When Esme Page was seventeen, her father gave her a teddy bear for Christmas, which angered her.[9]

Behind the scenes[]

  • It is anachronistic for Abraham Ronen to own a teddy bear in 1890, as they were first invented in 1903.
  • Fred was two years older than Ron, meaning he would have been five years old when he transformed Ron's teddy bear. Children that young typically have no control over their magic, thus Fred probably performed magic unintentionally, though it is possible that he took the wand of one of his parents or older brothers to perform the spell.
