How can only Cadmus's line be intermingled with Slytherin?

The ring with the resurrection stone was known as Slytherin's ring. How can it be known as Slytherin's ring and have the Peverell insignia, if they were truly unrelated for a long period of time? That doesn't make any sense. The insignia could only be on the ring - if it truly is Slytherin's ring, which according to the books it is - if Cadmus's line was connected to Slytherin beforehand. Meaning both James and Harry are Heirs of Slytherin as well. JarinJove (talk) 08:14, August 24, 2016 (UTC)

It not known as "Slytherin's ring" - it is only ever called Marvolo Gaunt's ring and it only ever had the Peverell insigna on it. I think your thinking of Slytherin's locket :)
A descendant of Cadmus Peverell had a child with a descendant of Salazar Slytherin. The family name eventually changed to Gaunt through the female line until eventually, Merope Gaunt married Tom Riddle and they had Tom Riddle Jr. They are related to the Potters very distantly - Harry is descended from Ignotus Peverell, who was Cadmus Peverell's younger brother. None of Ignotus Peverell's descendants had a child with one of Salazar Slytherin's descendants so they are not heirs of Slytherin.  Therefore, Harry is only a distant cousin to Voldemort through the Peverell line. The ring got passed from Cadmus to his descendents, ending up in the Gaunt branch of the family. Hope that made sense! --Kates39 (talk) 09:33, August 24, 2016 (UTC)
