Doesn't the book mention that Hedwig had been away for three days, probably because she flew all the way to France to find Hermione? Thus wouldn't the letter have been written at a point between 28 July and 31 July, depending on how long it took Hedwig to get to France and back to Harry?--Rodolphus (talk) 16:10, April 22, 2017 (UTC)

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Chapter 1 (Owl Post) - "Hedwig had been absent for two nights now." It's just one hour into 31 July when Hedwig returns, so it's unlikely the letter was written on 31 July, especially given how Hedwig is helping to carry Errol. As Hedwig is only being let out at night, she probably left on the night of the 29th, arrived in France on the 30th, got the letter, and flew back arriving around 1 am on the 31st. The letter was most likely written on 30 July, but maybe best to say 29-31 July as we don't know owl flight times between Little Whinging and France?
