I just some calculations... at current market rate, and making some estimations on weight based on current-issue 'large' coins, a Galleon still has to be only about 0.5% actual gold in order to retain a face value higher than melt-down value. Of course, they could always be enchanted to be unmeltable, and it could certainly be illegal to do so. 88.106.126.242 00:03, August 3, 2010 (UTC)

I've seen £5/$10.07 and £4.97/$10.17 here and elsewhere without any sources... it's not mentioned on Pottermore (at least not on the Wizarding Money description), so are both (or either) values taken from Quidditch Through the Ages? --<span style="text-shadow:grey 0.15em 0.15em 0.1em">xensyria</span><span style="text-shadow:grey 0.25em 0.25em 0.12em">T</span> 02:53, May 29, 2012 (UTC) <small>edit: 15:22, May 30, 2012 (UTC)</small>

::Cheers; just found another reference in "Dumbledore's" foreword to that book that Comic Relief has raised £174m (34,000,872 Galleons, 14 Sickles, 7 Knuts) since 1985. Looking into historical currency values, it's quite complex to work out (the ~£5 a Galleon is good enough for most articles!), but I'm tempted to make an updated version of the table on Wizarding currency that auto-calculates from the currency exchange rates of the time (i.e. whenever Dumbledore was said to have written the foreword, and Comic Relief had raised that amount) using a reliable source and instructions on how to update it each year, and include a simplified version for the Galleon, Sickle and Knut pages, unless anyone objects? --<span style="text-shadow:grey 0.15em 0.15em 0.1em">xensyria</span><span style="text-shadow:grey 0.25em 0.25em 0.12em">T</span> 16:38, May 29, 2012 (UTC)

The currency values we're using apparently originate from a statement in Fantastic Beasts, according to the Wizarding currency page. ProfessorTofty 04:08, May 29, 2012 (UTC)
