Stephen William Hawking (born 8 January 1942) was an English Muggle theoretical physicist internationally considered the best since Albert Einstein.[1][2]

When Harry Potter arrived at The Leaky Cauldron after fleeing the Dursley house in 1993, there was a wizard sitting at a table reading A Brief History of Time, a best-selling popular science book written by Hawking.[2]

At the time of this book's publication, Hawking had been living with Lou Gehrig's disease for over twenty years, requiring him to use a wheelchair.[2]

EtymologyEdit

The name "Stephen" comes from the Greek name Στεφανος (Stephanos) meaning "crown".
