"An exception was made for the ghosts, who asserted that it was insensitive to class them as "beings" when they were so clearly "has-beens." Stump therefore created the three divisions of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures that exist today: the Beast Division, the Being Division, and the Spirit Division."
Newton Scamander, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them[src]

The Spirit Division was one of three divisions under the control of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.[1][2] It dealt with all duties and problems concerning those magical creatures classified as a "Spirit" by the British Ministry of Magic.[3]

As mentioned by Newt Scamander, ghosts objected to the prejudice against the living-impaired implicit in their being classified as beings (they considered themselves "has-beens"), so they were handled by the Spirit Division.[3]

History[]

"I have grievances to register with the Spirit Division!"
— A female ghost to the Spirit Division[src]

Moaning Myrtle haunted her bully Olive Hornby for a long period of time, even after Hornby left Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.[4] After Moaning Myrtle interrupted her brother's wedding, Olive most likely went to the Spirit Division of the Ministry of Magic to get rid of the troublesome ghost. Myrtle was then sent back to Hogwarts Castle, where she haunted the bathroom in which she died.[5]

During the 1990–1991 school year, Jacob's sibling as part of their work experience at the Ministry, was tasked by Amos Diggory to locate the missing Puffskein of a female ghost called Mr Bigglesby, and find it a new home.[6]

Later during this year, Jacob's sibling was assigned to help resolve the issue of a troublesome poltergeist that was haunting a Muggle family in the Spirit Division by Arthur Weasley.[7]

Elton Elderberry's file which contained his personal recipe for shepherd's pie became misplaced in the Spirit Division, which Jacob's sibling found after a ghost pointed it out to them.[8]
