" isn't a rune and it's not in the syllabary either. All along I thought it was a picture of an eye, but now I don't think it is!"
—Hermione Granger, referring to the symbol of the Deathly Hallows[src]

Spellman's Syllabary is a syllabary spell book and also used as one of the the textbooks for Ancient Runes classes in Hogwarts. It is presumed that the book shows ancient runic scripts and their meanings, as well as the pronunciation for these runes.

Hermione Granger also owned a copy of the book when she took up the subject in her third year. In her fifth year, she consulted for homework while idly discussing the second Quidditch match of the season with Fred and George Weasley and Harry Potter.[1]

She also took it with her in 1997 when she joined Harry on his search for Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes and cried over it in Ronald Weasley's bedroom at The Burrow when Harry suggested that the Death Eaters might have "transfigured Moody and stuffed him."[2] She later used it to decipher the runes from the wizard fairytale, The Tales of Beedle the Bard, bequeathed by Albus Dumbledore in his will. The absence of the symbol of the Deathly Hallows from the syllabary led her to believe that it might have special significance.[3]
