"Are you a wizard, or what?"
The title of this article is conjectural. Although it is based on canonical information, the actual name is a conjecture and may be supplanted at any time by additional information released from canonical sources. If this occurs, please move this page to the appropriate title. |
Spell creation is the highly dangerous and mysterious art of creating new spells.[1] Only witches and wizards with great understanding of magic are known to be able to invent and create spells.
Processes
Not much is known about this form of magic. Most wizards and witches only know it is extremely dangerous and that a lot of people have suffered a great deal of injures and even death, hence few attempt it.
It seems centered very much around Latin. About 90% of all the spells are Latin in different forms; presumably, in order to create spells, it is very important to find the correct Latin pronunciation (as seen in Snape's potion book, wherein line after line had been crossed out, apparently as a result of trial-and-error.)
Known spell inventors and their creations

Many jinxes and hexes |
Spells described as 'unpleasant'. Created in the Middle Ages.
Delfina Crimp was a London clothier in the 15th century; she invented the Severing Charm to help her to accurately cut fabric.
Invented in 1544, first used on self to ill effect.
Taught to Eldon Elsrickle, who used it to rob the houses of London, in the early 1600s.
First used in 1754 after a riot after a broom race left the Coliseum in ruins.
First used to illuminate a corner in which she had dropped a quill. Invented in 1772.
Used to make broomsticks more comfortable, in 1820.
Invented (c. 1929) with his partner Randolph Keitch.
Used as the sign of the Death Eaters. Created during, or shortly prior to, the First Wizarding War. Thought to be magically impossible, unsupported flight was invented by Tom Riddle - that is, flight without need of broomstick or thestral.
All spells recorded in his copy of Advanced Potion Making were also crafted by him. Created between 1977 and 1978.
Unknown spell which resulted in her death. |
Invented in 1990. Mrs. Lovegood's death was described as 'gory'.
Fred and George Weasley |
||
|
Invented in 1995. |
Behind the scenes
- It is possible that Gilderoy Lockhart was a spell inventor, as he seemed to make several spells (Deboning, Peskipiksi Pesternomi, etc.) up on the spot. This would explain why he did not expect them to work the way they did all of them producing the correct effect (etymologically speaking) bar Peskipiksi Pesternomi.
