A Spell-Checking Quill is a type of quill that is used to correct an individual's mispelling. They were sold at Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes in 1996, where Ron Weasley bought one. However, the charm on the quills wore off after several months, resulting in even worse spelling than before.

Behind the scenes

  • Due to the effects of Ron Weasley's Spell-Checking quill wearing off, his homework was left with terrible misspellings: "belligerent" starting with "B — U — M" and "augury" with "O — R — G", as well as "Dementors" becoming "Dugbogs", and Ron's name became "Roonil Wazlib".
  • The misspelling of "Roonil Wazlib" also seemed to occur to older writings, despite being written long ago, as the name in the Advanced Potion-Making changed when Harry Potter used it as a decoy against Severus Snape.
