[edit] Skirmish
As Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks were leaving the Christmas dinner at The Burrow, Bellatrix Lestrange Apparated outside, then encircled the house with a raging ring of fire. Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley watched the scene from a window.
As Bellatrix fled to the marshland surrounding the Burrow, Harry took off after her in an attempt to avenge the murder of his godfather, Sirius Black, Bellatrix's cousin, by her the previous summer. Ginny followed Harry trying to stop him, realizing it was a trap. Harry ran after Bellatrix with minimum visibility through the tall-grass as she taunted him, chanting "I killed Sirius Black! I killed Sirius Black!" and "Are you coming to get me?".
Lupin, Tonks, and Arthur Weasley tried to follow them into the grassy marsh, but were held back by the attacking ring of fire. Harry and Ginny became lost in the middle of the tall grass, while Bellatrix and Greyback watched them from in hiding. Ginny was ambushed by Greyback, but Harry appeared just in time to stop Greyback from stunning her. Bellatrix joined Greyback in trying to capture them as Harry and Ginny deflected their spells. Lupin, Tonks, and Arthur found the two teens and aided them in holding off the Death Eaters. Outnumbered, Greyback and Bellatrix retreated. The two Disapparated to the Burrow, setting fire to it before fleeing.
[edit] Behind the scenes
- This skirmish was shown in the film and video game adaptations of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and did not occur in the book. As it contradicts the events of the novel, it is not considered canon.
- It is unknown how extensive the damage to the Burrow ultimately was, or if it was repaired. It is also unknown how this will affect the events of the Deathly Hallows film.
- It has been speculated that the ring of fire Bellatrix cast around the Burrow may have been Fiendfyre, although this remains unconfirmed.
- In the video game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry duels Bellatrix Lestrange and Fenrir Greyback, which not happens in the film, where Harry only fires a few spells at Greyback, which he deflected.
- Despite the magical defences, Bellatrix still managed to cause major damage to the Burrow.
