"Voldemort was forced to conjure a shining silver shield out of thin air."
— Voldemort casting this spell[src]

This spell (incantation unknown) allowed the caster to conjure a physical, silver shield in front of the caster, protecting them from magical assaults.[1]

History of use[]

During the Duel in the Ministry Atrium between Lord Voldemort and Dumbledore, Voldemort conjured a silver shield which protected him from one of Dumbledore's curses, despite the latter being exceptionally powerful. The only effect was a "deep, gong-like note", which Harry Potter felt sounded "oddly chilling".[1]

Behind the scenes[]

  • The novel's illustrations show the shield emblazoned with a serpent; however, this is not mentioned in the books.
  • Given Voldemort's extreme mastery with charms, and the fact that he used transfiguration to summon a silver shield to protect himself from Dumbledore's forceful spell, implies that perhaps a normal Shield Charm could not block Dumbledore's powerful spell, but this is unconfirmed.
