Requirements to be a secret keeper
Not everyone can be a secret keeper. The following requirements must be met, evidenced by the fact that no known fidelius charm is ever used under these circumstances.

* An organism must be physically capable of revealing the secret if it so chooses. For example, you cannot simply designate a cockroach as a secret-keeper, with the knowledge that no cockroach will ever be able to communicate the secret to a human.

* A person being hidden cannot be their own secret-keeper, evidenced when Lily and James Potter could not use themselves as secret keepers to hide from Voldemort.

* It is highly probable that the owner of an inanimate object cannot be the secret-keeper of that object's location, evidenced by the fact that Harry chose to return the Elder Wand to Dumbledore's grave, rather than hide it in an undisclosed location, serving as that location's sole secret-keeper (which would have been much more effective at keeping the elder wand out of the hands of evil).

A Secret-Keeper is a person designated to keep a secret by means of the Fidelius Charm. The Secret-Keeper is the only person who is capable of revealing the protected information to others, either by informing them orally or by writing it down. This individual will become bound by the Fidelius Charm as well. If a Secret-Keeper dies, all the people already aware of the secret information become Secret-Keepers.

Known Secret-Keepers

Behind the scenes

 • Severus Snape once said that when a Secret-Keeper tells someone the secret, this person is bound by the Fidelius Charm and cannot tell anyone else[2]. However, Ron Weasley was able to tell Dobby where Shell Cottage was, despite the fact that it was under the Fidelius Charm, with Bill Weasley as the Secret-Keeper[3]. Possible explanations for the discrepancy are that Ron himself was also a Secret-Keeper, that house-elves such as Dobby have ways around magic protection and concealment, or that the Fidelius Charm was not yet in effect at that time. It is also possible that since an elf's highest law is it's master's bidding, Dobby was not bound by the charm.
