"Good day, class! Today we will be studying a semi-sentient plant, the Screechsnap. If, like myself, you've been teased for talking to plants, you will find this lesson particularly vindicating."
Professor Sprout introducing this plant to her fifth-year students[src]

Screechsnap was a magical plant with the ability to move and make noise.[2] It was also "semi-sentient" having the ability to feel both pain and pleasure.[1]

History[]

Screechsnap lesson HM57

Jacob's sibling observing Screechsnap in Herbology

During the 1988–1989 school year, Professor Sprout taught her fifth-year Herbology students how to handle these plants at Hogwarts, in preparation for their Ordinary Wizarding Levels that year.[1] The Herbology practical O.W.L. examination that year involved the handling of Screechsnap.[3]

During a fifth-year Herbology lesson in 1996, Susan Bones distractedly put an excessive amount of dragon dung on her tray of Screechsnap seedlings, which made them squirm and squeak in irritation.[2]
