The Salem Witches' Institute is a wizarding organisation for women,[1] located in Salem, Massachusetts. Some of the institute's members attended the 1994 Quidditch World Cup, and were gossiping happily in between two tents bearing the institute's name.
Behind the scenes
- The Salem Witches' Institute featured in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as a joke on the Women's Institutes, even though these primarily exist in Great Britain and Canada in the real world.[1]
- Some fans believed this to be the American wizarding school that J. K. Rowling claimed in an interview would be mentioned in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,[2] even though Rowling has dismissed that theory.[1] However, the same book makes mention of another "American" school, the Brazilian wizarding school, located in South America.
- The banner which displays the school's name is described in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as a "spangled banner", which is more than likely a reference to the American Flag, which is "spangled" with stars and referred to in the American National Anthem as "the star-spangled banner".
- It is assumed that this institute is based in Salem, Massachusetts, the setting for the Salem witch trials.
- Despite the fact that the institute was mentioned by a canon source, which would normally indicate that it is itself canon, Rowling insists that it is not.
- Furthermore, it is possible that it was a generic description of Ilvermorny, similar to how Castelobruxo was referred to as the Brazilian wizarding school.
