The Runic Alphabets are a set of related alphabets that used letters, known as runes, to write various Germanic languages before the adoption of the Latin alphabet. It was later used for specialized purposes.

Lessons in Ancient Runes are given at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry that teach students how to identify and translate them. Using the Time-Turner, Hermione Granger was able to take both Ancient Runes and Divination at the same time in her third year. She also translated the The Tales of Beedle the Bard from the original runic alphabet into modern English.

Using The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Albus Dumbledore was able to lead Hermione Granger to the Deathly Hallows.
