"The rock cakes almost broke their teeth."
— Harry's and Ron's opinion on Hagrid's rock cakes[src]

Rock cakes are a type of fruitcakes. They were supposed to have a hard surface, but not be quite as rocky as Rubeus Hagrid's version seemed to. Eating one of Hagrid's rock cakes was exactly like eating a rock, as they were so hard that they could break teeth instead of being a lovely treat.[1]

History

In 1984, Hagrid had baked rock cakes for his own birthday, and Madam Hooch said that they could be used for Bludger replacements.[3]

In 1990, Hagrid suggested that if Jacob's sibling took some of his rock cake to the Centaur Camp, the centaurs would greet them better, although Torvus confessed that despite being beasts, they didn't have the heart to tell Hagrid the truth that his rock cake was not enjoyed.[4]

Once, an unidentified third-year was upset over failing an exam, and Hagrid baked them rock cake.[5]

Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger and Harry Potter forced themselves to eat a few of these whenever they visited Rubeus Hagrid.[1][2] Although they complained about the hardness, stickiness, and tastelessness of the cakes, they never had the heart to tell Hagrid this, as it would have hurt his feelings. However, Hagrid was aware that Harry in particular didn't enjoy his rock cakes, later claiming that he knew that Harry was just pretending to spare his feelings.[6] He served ones that contained raisins to Harry and Ron for the first time after their first week of lessons in 1991.[1]

During the summer holidays in 1994, Hagrid sent Harry a sack full of rock cakes, which Harry did not touch, due to his past experience with Hagrid's cooking.[7]

When Harry, Ron and Hermione visited Hagrid in the 1996–1997 school year for the first time that year at his hut, Hagrid presented them with a plate of rock cakes and tea. Harry was hungry enough that he took one of the cakes at once, but he later abandoned it "after an ominous cracking noise from one of his back teeth".[2]

Behind the scenes

  • Rock cakes (sometimes called rock buns) are traditional small, round British cakes. Unlike Hagrid's version, they are not intended to be hard but are named for their rough, rock-like surface. They were promoted by the British government during WWII as they required fewer rationed ingredients, such as eggs and sugar, than other types of tea cakes.
