"Harry felt a slight sense of foreboding. He had rarely seen Mr or Mrs Weasley wearing anything that the Dursleys would call "normal." Their children might don Muggle clothing during the holidays, but Mr and Mrs Weasley usually wore long robes in varying states of shabbiness. Harry wasn't bothered about what the neighbours would think, but he was anxious about how rude the Dursleys might be to the Weasleys if they turned up looking like their worst idea of wizards."
Harry worries about how the Dursleys would react to the Weasleys turning up wearing normal wizarding clothing[src]

Robes were loose-fitting outer garments most commonly worn by wizards and witches.[5][1][6] A robe was distinguished from a cape or cloak by the fact that it usually had sleeves. They could come in many forms, patterns, designs and colours, and were available in standard and dress varieties, among others.

Hogwarts students were required to own three sets of standard black robes as part of their uniform when they attended classes, ate meals and studied in the Great Hall.[7][1] For the Yule Ball in 1994 (part of the traditional calendar of the Triwizard Tournament, which took place that year), students were required to wear dress robes, which were a more formal version of standard robes.[8]

Hogwarts students typically wore Muggle clothing when travelling to catch the Hogwarts Express and then changed into robes. Students were expected to be wearing their robes by the time they arrived at Hogsmeade station and might have been docked house points if they were not by Professors.[9]

The robes worn by Hogwarts Professors were more academic in nature and varied in colour. Some wore highly decorated robes, such as Albus Dumbledore,[5] but most wore simpler robes, such as Severus Snape and Minerva McGonagall, whose robes were generally plain in style and colour.[10]

There were several wizarding shops that sold robes in Great Britain, such as Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions[1] and Twilfitt and Tattings in Diagon Alley,[2] and Gladrags Wizardwear in the village of Hogsmeade.[3][4]

PAS Robes

Gryffindor robes as seen in Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells

  • In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the dress robes were described as being "More or less the same as ... school ones". However this was greatly changed for the film adaptation, where the boys appeared to be wearing attire similar to Muggle formal-wear and girls were dressed in elegant ball gowns.
  • Most adults were said to be dressed in robes in the books, but in the films they dress in more normal Muggle-style clothing.
  • The school uniforms in the books are said to be just one black robe, which is worn over normal clothes. But in the films, the uniforms were changed to being more like public school uniforms. The book's version of the school uniforms remains true to the video game adaptations of Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets, except the GBC versions.
  • All Hogwarts House robes are available for purchase at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and The Making of Harry Potter.
