"If they take out all of us and you survive, Harry, the rear guard are standing by to take over; keep flying east and they’ll join you."
—Alastor Moody informs Harry Potter of the rear guard's existence[src]

The rear guard was a group of Order of the Phoenix members set up as part of the escort provided to Harry Potter on the night of 5 August, 1995, following an attack by Dementors at Little Whinging. They served the purpose of backup assistance for the Advance Guard. Harry was informed by Alastor Moody that, in the event that all of the Advance Guard died and Harry managed to survive, he could meet up with the rear guard by flying east and they would escort him to 12 Grimmauld Place from there. However, the trip to Grimmauld Place was without event, and thus the rear guard proved unnecessary.[1]
