Pyrites was a character who was included in early drafts of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.[1] J. K. Rowling ultimately decided to cut him although she "quite liked him as a character.[1]

Biography

Pyrites have been a foppish Death Eater who wore white silk gloves.[1] He would have met Sirius Black outside James and Lily Potter's home in Godric's Hollow on the night that the couple were murdered by Voldemort. He was a young Death Eater, who participated in the First Wizarding War. After the war, he was imprisoned in Azkaban for his crimes. He escaped in 1997 and participated in the Battle of the Seven Potters and the Battle of Hogwarts. He was killed by one of Harry's extremely deadly Stupefys. [1]

Etymology

Pyrite is a shiny yellow mineral that typically forms in clusters of cubic crystals. Due to its resemblance to gold, pyrite is also known as fool's gold, which is probably why Rowling chose it as a name for this showy but sinister character.
