- "They had arrived outside a large, old-fashioned, red brick department store called Purge and Dowse Ltd. The place had a shabby, miserable air; the window displays consisted of a few chipped dummies with their wigs askew, standing at random and modelling fashions at least ten years out of date. Large signs on all the dusty doors read CLOSED FOR REFURBISHMENT."
- — The outward appearance of the store[src]
Purge and Dowse, Ltd was a department store located in London. While outwardly appearing to be a red brick Muggle clothing store under renovation, the dilapidated building actually disguised the entrance to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.[1]
Entrance to St Mungo's[]
- "It’s never open, that place...."
- — A Muggle woman regarding the mysterious store[src]
Entrance to St Mungo's was achieved by speaking to a mannequin in one of the shop windows and stating your reason for wishing entry. Once the mannequin nodded its assent, the people who wished entry walked through the window and into the reception area of St Mungo's. The theory behind using this building for the entrance to St Mungo's was that injured witches and wizards could simply blend with the Muggle crowd on their way to the hospital. Muggles simply assumed the shop was derelict.[1]
