- — Description[src]
Pumpkin Pasties were a wizarding food sold in Honeydukes[3] and by the Honeydukes Express trolley on the Hogwarts Express. They were similar to a Cornish pasty, but were filled with pumpkin instead.[2]
History
Miranda Goshawk wrote in the Book of Spells that some students used the Hardening Charm to play tricks on other students, such turning a pumpkin pasty to the consistency of stone just before someone bit into it.[4]
Harry Potter tried them for the first time on the Hogwarts Express on 1 September 1991, at the start of his first year, when he famously impressed Ron Weasley by buying some of everything on the trolley.[2]
On 1 September 1994, Cho Chang ordered two from the food trolley.[5]
In 2010, Mrs Flume thought you couldn't go wrong with a Pumpkin Pasty. She baked them fresh in the morning for Honeydukes.[3]
In 2020, the Trolley Witch stated she had already made over six million Pumpkin Pasties and could turn them into bombs.[1]
Behind the scenes
- Pasties are a traditional baked meat and pastry pie. This indicates that Pumpkin Pasties are similar fare, using pumpkin as the filling instead of meat and vegetables.[6]
- In the PC versions of the video games, pumpkin pasties along with Cauldron Cakes can be collected and traded as currency, much to the Honeydukes Chef's dismay (acting similar to a dollar foil to Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans in a sense). Though in the other video games, they are mainly used as healing items, or in the GBA version of the video game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, a stamina booster.
- Also in the video games, the pasties resemble actual miniature pumpkins instead of a pie. Some renditions also show them with a carved face as well.
- In some games, "pasty" is sometimes misspelled as "pastry".
