Preformationism was a biological theory that was popular from the 17th century through to the 19th century. It postulated that all living things developed from animalcules, complete miniature versions of the organism in question, which were held to have existed from the beginning of time. The theory was eventually discredited by the genetics-based scientific understanding of the biology of reproduction.
