Practical Defensive Magic and Its Use Against the Dark Arts was a set of books about defensive magic. It had moving colour illustrations of all the counter-jinxes and hexes it described.

History

Harry Potter received a set of these books in 1995 as a Christmas present from Sirius Black and Remus Lupin. Harry planned to put them to good use in his lessons for Dumbledore's Army.[1]

On 27 July, 1997, Harry stored a copy of Elphias Doge's Daily Prophet obituary of Albus Dumbledore in his copy of the first volume of these books, throwing the remainder of the newspaper in the rubbish pile.[2]

Behind the scenes

  • This book seems to serve as a direct counterpoint to Defensive Magical Theory, which contained no practical information and referred to counter-jinxes as merely being a name which people give their jinxes when they want to make them sound more acceptable.
